I guess France wasn't ready for a woman leader.
Right. Only the right kind of women are seen as women. On this point you truly are wrong. Women never cared for Marine's feminity, it was an argument for Royal a decade ago but not for her. That is weird, but people do not truly think of her as a woman, so no,sexism has nothing to do with it. She herself does not consider there is any link between that and her defeat.
Marine lost because she is a Le Pen, she had no program, she embodies the far right and so the country wanted to block it, and her last debate was truly catastrophic. In fact, after watching it, I realized that despise what I thought, I could never vote for her.
For example, during Hillary Clinton's campaign, Madeleine Albright said to women, “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.”Hint: it's sarcasm because this is Clinton's argument.
The Le Pen voters I know - and I know a few - didn't care that she was a woman. I don't think they even consciously registered that she's a woman. I mean, I have a French uncle who's a total [insert expl. of choice] and an absolute sexist who berates me for emasculating my man and neglecting my child because I work, but he voted for her.
Conversely, Le Pen supporters have no problems attacking Macron's wife because she is older.
I'm thrilled she didn't win but Macron's fighting an uphill battle, unfortunately.
I guess France wasn't ready for a woman leader.
