It certainly wasn't the White House since it occurred in the 1990's ... but as to whether it came from Obama? The consensus of knowledgeable opinion is that a publisher would never have released that information without Obama's explicit approval. So far as I know Barack Obama has never explained why his booklet was published claiming Kenya as his birthplace. It appears to have been convenient at the time.

As for mis-speaks, Michelle Obama is on record referring to Kenya as Barack's homeland ... despite his being born in Hawaii ... so there's that.

Yes, this is why it is odd, to me, for you to make reference to that, as it was not from the White House, or Obama, did not happen during his presidency, at all. A misspeak, typo, etc, that is something that most everyone, will do. They are not comparable, to anyone being honest about the matter, to Spicer's statements, on Hitler and the Holocaust.

Yes ...

... the very point I made about the media being dishonest about Spicer mis-speaking.

Of course, in Obama's case, it's more than a mis-speak. Much speculation has been made as to why ... so at the OP's request I won't dwell on that topic. Still, it serves as an excellent example of bad/misleading statements attributable to Obama which were essentially ignored by the press.

No he certainly was not attempting to be humorous when he said there were 57 states. He was thinking of something else and misspoke. Much like Spicer, he is not very adept at speaking extemporaneously. That is a small flaw for a President but really completely unacceptable for a Press Secretary. The whole point of the job is to act as a buffer between the President and the press in order to avoid misstatements and explain the administration position in such a way as to give the press and the entertainment media the least amount of fodder for either negative spin or lampooning. Spicer has been so incompetent that he has more often been the cause of controversy rather than the one whose words help the administration deal with controversy.

I looked up the comment, made by Obama, whilst campaigning in 2008, about the 57 states. It's perfectly clear, from the context, and the speech pattern, that he had meant to say 47. No-one, but a fool, could think otherwise. Such small errors, they are very normal, made by most people. Spicer's comments, they were not a simple error, at all. It's entirely stupid, to make any comparisons, between the two. I agree with you, that Spicer has been incompetent.

I think you are being a bit hard on Obama if you really think his mistake was because he thought there were 47 states and said 57 by mistake.

He said he had been to 57 states and still had a few to go. He meant to say he had been to 47 states. It wasn't him saying he thought there were 47 states total.

And have I said he did think that? He made a mistake in saying that he had been to 57 states. Why he made the mistake is irrelevant to the point the person that brought it up in the first place was making i.e. that the press is bias toward left leaning politicians and against right leaning ones and display that bias in their reporting.

I just couldn't believe how much he blundered it when the press threw him a lifeline to clarify his statements.
He didn't
This is the problem of perception. With Trump retweeting from racist sites, picking Bannon as an advisor, and having been fined for racism in the past, people assume that it's malice, not stupidity involved here.

I'm not so sure that it is, but Trump has no one to blame but himself for the conclusions many people are drawing from this.

That would be the very one he might have bragged about to his family and friends, no? Nope, no one knew at all.

Goderich wrote. “There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more.”

A New York Times article about Barack Obama published in 1990, a year before the Acton & Dystel promotional booklet was issued, correctly identified his birthplace as Hawaii.

A variant of this item paired the image shown above with the statement “Big Oops! Harvard Law Review did not cleanse its 1991 yearbook which states he was born in Kenya.” As noted above, the biographical sketch pictured above was put out by a literacy agency; it was not part of any yearbook published by Harvard.
Obama's Literary Agent Said He Was Born in Kenya?

Even Trump has finally confessed that the birther claims are lies:

Trump finally admits it: 'President Barack Obama was born in the United States'

Trump finally admits it: 'President Barack Obama was born in the United States' - CNNPolitics.com

If even Trump is smart enough to figure it out, who would still believe the story?

Hasn't this argument been settled by Spicer himself? He has offered an unreserved apology for his statement. He has conceded that his words were "wrong" and "insensitive". He says he should have not spoken without thinking more deeply first. If he considers himself 'guilty', who are we to argue...?
