So what do you think Paul meant here that he had not been perfected? Was it had something to do with sin (which is lawlessness). Do you think his faith in Christ wasn't perfected? Did he not trust him completely? Did he somehow believe Jesus wasn't wholly God? Or was it that his love wasn't yet perfected.

What do you think the high calling of God is? Salvation? Or the ultimate in communion with God's Spirit? It is interesting that in a later book, he claimed to have reached it. "7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing."
It meant he wasn't perfect. God demands perfection does he not? Perfect in live perfect in faith perfect in all things. Failure to be perfect is missing the mark which is sin is it not? Paul says he isn't perfect. He fails and failure is sin. Sin is not just failure to follow the law or the commands of the law.
But as noted by Paul, he fought a good fight, he kept the faith, he finished the course all inspite of not being perfect. Imagine that. He walked in righteousness, not in unrighteousness. He failed and sinned but it didn't end his salvation.

Psalms says, it is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect (Psalms 18:32).

Jesus says be ye perfect as the Heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48).

God says in His Word, be ye holy because I am holy (1 Peter 1:16).

1 Peter 4:1-2 says we can cease from sin if we suffer in the flesh. It also says that we should live the rest of our time here to the will of God.

As for Paul's statement of not having reached perfection: Well, this does not negate the rest of Scripture that commands us to be perfect. Nor does it negate the existence of the 144,000 who were found without fault before the throne of God (Revelation 14:3-5).

But what about Paul not having reached perfection? Well, there is a difference between sins unto death and sins not unto death (1 John 5:16-17). Sins unto death are any sins that lead unto the Second Death (Also known as the Lake of the Fire) (Revelation 21:8). This would be sins like murder, hate, adultery, theft, lying, etc. (of which Paul said himself that they which do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God). As for sins not unto death: Well, while sins not unto death is primarily talking about unconfessed sin (from the above list of sins) in 1 John 5:16-17, it also alludes or indirectly refers to sins like:

(a) Not being baptized (1 Peter 3:21).
(b) Causing divisions & boasting in each other (1 Corinthians 3:1-15).
(c) Hidden or secret faults (Psalms 19:12).

Errors or faults would be like going over the speed limit a little or not taking out the trash last night like you knew should have.

They did not state you must believe Christ I God to be saved.

again you are contrary to scripture and the NT writers

2 Corinthians 5:19 (KJV)
To wit, that
God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation"

Galatians 3:17 (KJV)
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ,..."

1 John 4:3 (KJV)
And every spirit that confesseth not that
Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."

1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)
"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh,..."

To a recent statement made by one who believes in a sin and still be saved gospel:

Luckily I am not bound by such foolishness of men that would try to hinder us believers from using God's Word to tell the truth.

It is written,

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, "If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me."

(John 14:23-24).

Are you saying Paul was not dead to sin as he wrote in Romans 6?

Please make note of the rest of the chapter.

Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! - Romans 6:11-15 Bible Gateway passage: Romans 6:11-15 - Common English Bible

Being dead to sin does not mean we are perfect right? Paul clarified what he means here. Reckon yourselves dead to sin. Reckon yourselves alive in Christ. Don't let sin reign or have Dominion over you. He is not saying we cannot or do not sin or miss the mark. He is saying don't give sin control over ourselves. We have control and the ability not to be slaves to sin like the unbelieving are. We are not under law but grace. So should we sin? Of course not. No one is claiming we should. But we do sometimes miss the mark but because if grace we are dead to it's hold, Dominion and we are not slaves to it.

Heres the problem Jason. You have decided which sin leads to death which don't in this case. There are sins that don't lead to death? I thought all sin separated us from God not just certain ones? Doesn't God demand perfection and holiness as he is holy? But you have decided which sins are more unholy than others and lead to death. We know that some do as spoken of such as lying to the Holy Spirit like Annanias and Saphira. Or people who drink communion unworthily. Or blaspheme the Holy Spirit. But there are only about three or four cases mentioned. What are the sins? The Bible does not have a list of sins that are into death and which ones are not. The above listed things I mentioned are far and few between.

We'll it's clear in John here. It is walking continual unrepentent sin. It's not a single sin. Intentional driving over the speed limit is sin as Paul tells us to obey the law. No as John says walking in sin sends us away from God not a single act. Hebrews says the same thing.

As I have said and this is the last time I will say it to you. The righteous life is a walk not a moment in time. It is not a perfect walk, but it is still righteous to the ones who have placed their faith is Jesus Christ for their salvation. Who walk not after the flesh. It's a walk Jason. A lifestyle. We wrestle with the flesh and fail, but because our faith is in Christ not of works we strive to set those things behind us and press on to high calling of Jesus Christ. Grace be to you.

We are told not to let sin reign in our mortal bodies and we become slaves (servants) to righteousness. As for the phrase, "you are not under the Law": Well, this is in reference to the Old Law and not all law. Read Romans 2:25, Romans 3:1, Romans 7:6, Romans 8:2-4.

But you really do not believe that sin does not have dominion over you because you deny Sinless Perfectionism here in this life. So you are a slave to sin here on this Earth because you are declaring that you will sin again at some unknown future date.

rj330 said:

One reason sin does not have dominion over us is because death of the Old Law cannot condemn us anymore. There were death penalties to the Old Law. Another reason sin also does not have dominion over His true followers because of Jesus Christ lives within them. For Galatians 5:24 says they that are Christ's have crucified the affections and lusts. For we are told to put on Christ so as not to fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Romans 13:14). But my telling you these verses really does not help you because you do not truly believe them in what they say. For you believe you will be a slave to sin here in this life because you think you cannot stop sinning here on this Earth. Yet, no verse every mentions this in relation to our call to be perfect and to be holy. One has to ignore every verse on overcoming sin, holiness, and perfection in order to make your belief work.

So you are saying that 1 John 5:16-17 is lying?

What do you think it is talking about?

I believe it is primarily talking about confessed sins that are serious like hate, adultery, lying, etc.(i.e. sins not unto death) versus not confessing of them (i.e. sins unto death). But I also believe that sins not unto death are mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, too. For the Bible many times confirms truth in other places (i.e. cross references).

Anyways, if you have not done the study on sins that lead unto death and sins that do not lead unto death, there is no shame in you simply saying that you do not know about them instead of saying there is no list of sins in either of these categories (Which is simply throwing down the ignorance card). In other words, study to show yourself approved unto God (2 Timothy 2:14).

Also, there are sins that clearly do not lead to the second death. One clear example is baptism. Peter says in 1 Peter 3:21 that baptism saves us not for the putting away of the filth of the flesh (i.e. sin - see 2 Corinthians 7:1), but as an answer to having already cleared conscience from God. This is telling us that water baptism is not for salvation. So if a person refuses to obey the command to be baptized they are committing a sin that does not lead unto the second death (i.e. the Lake of Fire).

Also, if a person were to speak bad words against the Holy Ghost, this can never be forgiven, either in this life, or the one to come (i.e. the Millennium or the future 1,000 year reign of Christ). But if you need a list of sins that lead to the second death, just read Revelation 21:8.

Side Note:

Just to give you a clue to doing a study on 1 John 5:16-17, also see James 5:19-20.

...

The power of sin is the law 1cor15:56

The example given as to why the above is so, was an example from the moral law.

But now a righteousness APART from law has been made known to which the law and the prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe
Rom3:21&22

Do we then nullify the law by this faith( a righteousness of faith in Christ, not observing the law) Not at all! Rather we uphold the law
Rom3:31

However:

They may be ever seeing but never perceiving
And ever hearing but never understanding
Mark4:12

Believers are initially and ultimately saved by God's grace (i.e. Jesus Christ).
It is why a person who comes to Jesus for the first time can have an assurance of salvation (Without doing any kind of work). Initial and ultimate salvation is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). For even if a believer were to stumble into sin, do they get clean by doing another work? No. They get clean by confessing their sins to Jesus (1 John 2:1) (1 John 1:9) and they ask Jesus to help them to overcome their sin (or to forsake it) (Matthew 26:41) (Romans 13:14) (John 15:5).
So there is no Man Directed Works Alone Salvationism going on here.

However, in the Pharisee religion, they turned God's salvation into a system of works without God's grace (Which was Man Directed Works Alone Salvationism).
This is evident by reading the Parable of the Tax Collector and the Pharisee (Luke 18:9-14).
For the Pharisee did not humble himself before God by repenting of his sins.
For the Pharisee religion made salvation all about Law alone.

But, the Law alone only makes sinners to be aware of their sins.

Sin gives death its sting, and God's standards give sin its power.
(1 Corinthians 15:56 GWT).

"Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the Law. For the Law merely brings awareness of sin." (Romans 3:20).

The Pharisees tried to be justified by the Old Law alone or a system of works. But the Law only brings an awareness of sin.

Paul was in the Pharisee religion of Law alone salvationism and Paul struggled as a Pharisee to keep God's Laws under the Old Covenant (i.e. the 613 Laws of Moses) that did not apply anymore as a whole (except the moral law) after Christ's resurrection.

"The laws in Moses' Teachings bring about anger. But where laws don't exist, they can't be broken." (Romans 4:15 GWT).

It's why Romans 6:14 says,
"for ye are not under the law,."

It is talking about the Old Law (and not all law).

For Paul says in Romans 3:1,
"What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?"

"But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me..." (Romans 7:13).

Sin that it might appear as sin. That is what Paul says in Romans 7:13.
See, after Christ's death, the New Covenant (New Testament) was officially put into effect (Hebrews 9:15-18) (Luke 22:20) and certain Laws in the Old Covenant do not appear as sin anymore for New Covenant believers because there are many laws in the Old Covenant that do not apply anymore like circumcision (Galatians 5:2), eating unclean animals (Acts 10:9-16).
It is why the temple veil was torn from top to bottom at Christ's death (Matthew 27:51).
For the Old Law on animal sacrifices did not apply anymore.

For when the Law of Moses first came to Moses there were death penalties attached to disobeying them. So the Commandment that was ordained for life, the Israelite found it to be unto death and it slew him.
The Law alone (without God and His salvation) could not help the Israelite. It is why we read the following.

8 "But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me." (Romans 7:8-11).

The Old Law was a school master or teacher that helped to bring us unto Christ so we can be justified by faith.

"Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith."` (Galatians 3:24).

Our initial and ultimate salvation rests upon being justified in Christ.

But God's grace is not a license for immorality (or for sin).

"For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord." (Jude 1:4 NIV).

On the flip side,

1 "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God."
(Romans 8:1-8).

For you can deny God by a lack of works (Titus 1:16).
And if you do not have any kind of holiness, you will not see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).

As a part of God's commandments: We cannot worship a false god or idols.
In fact, common sense should tell you that you cannot worship a false god and still be right with the true GOD. In any event, Jesus Christ is the true GOD (1 John 5:20), just as God the Father is the true GOD (John 17:3). Here are several reasons in Scripture to consider that Jesus Christ is GOD.

Jesus Christ is God: For believers can pray to Him.
  1. We are commanded to pray to Jesus: John 14:14; James 1:1-7; 1 Corinthians 1:2; Ephesians 5:19; Acts 8:22.
  2. We have apostolic examples of praying to Jesus: Revelation 22:20, 2 Corinthians 12:7-9, Acts 7:54-60; Acts 8:24.
  3. We have necessary inferences of pray to Jesus: 1 John 5:11-15, Acts 1:24; Hebrews 7:25.

Jesus is God: For He can dwell within believers.

And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
(Romans 8:10).

"But when it pleased God, ... To reveal his Son in me," (Galatians 1:15-16).

"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me" (Galatians 2:20).

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love. (Ephesians 3:17).

"Christ in you, the hope of glory." (Colossians 1:27).

God's people quote Scripture because man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God that proceeds out of their mouth. Also, the sword of the Spirit is the Word of God (See Ephesians 6). Jesus (Who is God) referenced Scripture of the written Word of God many times.

Here is a quote from a poster on another Christian forum.

Jesus has been proven to be not only a credible witness, but a messenger from God. In all His teachings He referred to the divine authority of the Old Testament (Mt. 5:17-18; 8:17; 12:40-42; Lk. 4:18-21; 10:25-28; 15:29-31; 17:32; 24:25-45; Jn. 5:39-47). He quoted the Old Testament 78 times, the Pentateuch alone 26 times. He quoted from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Amos, Jonah, Micah, and Malachi. He referred to the Old Testament as “The Scriptures,” “the word of God,” and “the wisdom of God.” The apostles quoted 209 times from the Old Testament and considered it “the oracles of God.” The Old Testament in hundreds of places predicted the events of the New Testament; and as the New Testament is the fulfillment of, and testifies to the genuineness and authenticity of the Old Testament, both Testaments must be considered together as the Word of God.

Again, John 17:3 says God the Father is the True God, but 1 John 5:20 clearly says Jesus is the True God, too.

"....even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life." (1 John 5:20).

The Trinity in Scripture"
The one verse in Scripture that teaches the Trinity is 1 John 5:7.

"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." ~ (1 John 5:7)

The Bible also teaches that there is a plurality to GOD.

#1. The word Elohim (אֱלֹהִ֔ים) is both a singular and a plural noun.
#2. God refers to Himself in plural form (Genesis 1:26) (Genesis 3:22) (Genesis 11:7) (Isaiah 6:8).
#3. Plurality of God in New Testament (Matthew 28:19) (2 Corinthians 13:14) (John 14:16-20).
#4. Introductions to both the Son & Holy Spirit (Daniel 7:9,10,13,14) (John 14:16)
#5. Different persons of Godhead appear at one time (Luke 3:21-22)
#6. Distinctions of Wills within the Godhead (Luke 22:42).
#7. Conversations Between the Godhead (Psalm 2:1-12) (Psalm 45:6-7) (Psalm 110:1) (Matthew 11:27) (John 17:24).

Yet, we know GOD is also one.

"... The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord." (Mark 12:29).
