I didn't get into reloading until last year because I shot so little that it didn't make economic sense.

It still doesn't for me. I've spent more on reloading equipment and supplies than I ever will on ammo for the next ten years.

But, I've found it to be fun and personally fulfilling in that I can load up a box of plinking ammo, then a box of self-defense ammo, and then a box of hard-hitting solid lead bullet ammo for carrying in the woods. All of it custom tailored to my specific firearm and done exactly the way I want it.

My dad has been reloading for decades and is sub-contracted to a major firearms supply company to supply a large portion of their lead bullets. Last year they wanted 40k hand cast lead bullets in varying styles and weights. Dad is 73 and a tough old jarhead, but he finally asked me to help out. So I started casting bullets. It's a simple process with a lot of little nuances you need to know to produce perfect bullets; lead temp, mold temp, pour style, etc.

I found it to be actually kind of fun and relaxing...

So I bought my own lead pot, my own molds, then started casting bullets for my .45 Colt. Then I bought a cheap Lee press and eventually all of the components needed to manufacture rounds for my .45 Colt with 300gr hard-cast lead bullets and maximum powder loads for bear defense while hiking and riding horses in Idaho.

Then I thought why not start reloading for my carry pistol in .40 S&W? Spent more on the molds and components than I have spent in .40 S&W ammo in ten years, LOL. But, it's fun, and the molds and dies and other components will last a lifetime.

Who else reloads around here?

Anyone also cast their own bullets?

Just shotgun shells. Little cost effectiveness there either. If things get a little boring try leaving a little black powder in the ashtraysame around the house. Good fun and experience for the whole family.

I only started cause certain rounds like 9mm & .223 were unavailable?? Would have to go one place for powder another for bullets. Glad that situation improved.
Yeah, we imposed that "shortage" on ourselves when a big portion of gun owners went out a bought mass quantities during those periods. The ammo industry loved it though.

It was hard to get reloading supplies, too. The price of powder and primers shot up and hasn't really dropped yet significantly!

I don't yet, not sure I will. I don't have much of an attention span and can imagine all kinds of mistakes I could make!
I do save my brass and send it back for credit towards new ammo, so that does help.

I have and still do. Started with .303. Then .357 and .38 special; got rid of those, then .22-250; got rid of that now 7 x 57 and .223, 12ga when we shot trap and skeet; though I mainly shoot .22 and there is lots of inexpensive surplus 7.62 x 25 and 7.62 x 39; I do't have much to reload right now.

The ONLY rational reason for not reloading. Some folks just do fine with 'store-bought' ammanishion. (There's a gag there, somewhere.)

Since I have about half a barn doors worth and some calibers not loaded (not in the loads I want) and some not at all,
I have to reload to keep things operational. I do not currently cast bullets (I have in the past) but I may start swedging jacketed bullets to fill a gap in components. (No one makes a bronze bullet for 8mm Lebel.)

You have found there are few hard and fast rules about 'certain guns', 'certain calibers' and 'certain bullets'. Except for stuff like 'maximum pressure' and COL, all guns are problem unto themselves and must be solved individually.

By the way, 'target' guns and rifles show more individuality than handguns in general.

I cast and sized bullets for my .357 years ago. I also reloaded for some rifle calibers and shotgun shells. It was fun but I got busy with other stuff and did not shoot much. After several years I sold my equipment. I am considering taking it up again as I am getting interested in F-class shooting.

I used to shoot in BPCR competitions in AZ with an 1885 Winchester High Wall Uberti clone in .45-70.

One of my firearms goals is to drag it out this Summer and do some more shooting. I did some reloading for it for competition and I think I used 65 grains of Swiss ffg with a vegetable wad behind a 515 grain bullet. I still have the brass drop tube and around 8 full cans of black powder. Was thinking about working up some black powder loads for my .45 Colts.

Here's a picture of my 1885...

I HAVE to reload. Most of my firearms have ammunition available, and not so expensive that I can't afford it, but my 7mm STW is different. Ammunition for that one starts at about $60 for a box of 20 and goes up from there.

I don't cast my bullets or anything like that I simply buy good bullets from Sierra or even Berger and go from there.

I load cast or copper, depending on the application. I'd like to start casting my own one of these days, just haven't felt the need yet.

I tried to reload 9mm years ago but I cannot do it cheaper than what I pay for 124 grain Remington at $7.95 a box of 50. The factory ammo chronographs at 1180-1210 fps and that is good enough for me from a 5 inch barrel. The Marlin Camp Carbine goes a might further…

I've been a reloader since about age 8. I reload for about a dozen cartridges or so and do cast my own bullets also. I have 7 44 molds, maybe a half dozen in 45, a few 38's (which work fine in 9mm btw 158 swc) a 30 and a couple 45/70 molds. Oh and 12 ga slugs (foster type). I used to swage my own 45's but decided to sell off that equipment. Some guns have never seen a factory round, lol.
