A recent experience with a French hospital leads me to believe it's not all it's cracked up to be. Granted, it's anecdotal.
Do share. What was your experience if it relates to the cost of your care and quality of your care.

AllanDavid: That's the big buzzword here. Many politicians use the word 'free' constantly here. They promise 'free' things all the time, and YES that includes health care. It's got to the point that people actually BELIEVE it too. It's disingenuous, but it is what it is.
That's true and not just the one's who are for it but the one's who are against it. They aren't really listening are they?

Do you doubt that there are people in your country whose lives have been prolonged through your small experiment with public health insurance? Whose health has been improved? Whose medical costs have been more manageable...?
We do not have and never have had public health insurance where everyone is covered universally. The closest we come is Medicare for the disabled and those 65 and older.

Which is why I question WHY they didn't fix it last time.

Why dump MORE people into a program you know doesn't work - just to say you did something. They didn't. All they did was offer the program to more people knowing it doesn't work - just so they could say they gave something to the poor. That's outrageous.
Medcaid is administered by the individual states, not the feds. I worked in the medical billing office at a family clinic.
In my state it is a simple application form, proof of income, assets, and expenses. That is it. Processing is fairly quick, they go back three months and pay any outstanding bills, send an ID card [I think, they still do] and that is it. Once every six months or a year they send a letter asking if there are any changes to your circumstances of income, etc. You just send it back through the mail. I don't consider that a bunch of red tape.

You think you have it bad?

Have you heard about the VA ... the epitome of government run healthcare?
Isn't the VA one big program administered by the feds?

I believe that the US could set it up where each state would administer the program under set guidelines, just like Canada does. States are familiar with the issues of their own residents where the feds aren't.

It's administered by the states, and uses federal funding - and states pick up what they choose to. Yes, of course you have an application. You have that with regular insurance too.

In our state you must find a doctor that takes Medicaid. She is on the phone for hours trying to find one, and leaves messages...to which most don't call back. You have doctor's that will take it for a while, and then they don't take it anymore. You have to drive quite a ways - we drove 3 hours for a dental consultation - because they were the only ones taking the insurance. Then Medicaid turned the down the removal of the wisdom teeth, and that was after Medicaid told her to go there - after then dentist mentioned it. We have had a heck of time trying to find a ears, nose and throat doctor for her tonsil stones. We are still hunting for that one.

You can't just go anywhere, and then submit the bills to the state for payment. I wasn't speaking of red tape. I was speaking of trying to find doctor's. Most lose money taking them, and will only take that loss for so long. Then you have to find another one. It's hard to find them.

Seems like a way to get the worst of state and federal control. :(

Sorry, I thought you were partially agreeing with the other poster that there was a lot of red tape when using Medicaid.
I agree that it is more difficult to find specialists that accept Medicaid and some who do cannot accept anymore more Medicaid patients because they already have the quota that they can afford to take.
