I prefer commentary *sets* versus an entire commentary in one volume. Whenever I get to the point where I want to dig deeply into the ideas of others, the set gives them all the space they need. A single-volume commentary really just scratches the surface.

dysert, you have a good point....I must admit, a single-volume commentary just scratches the surface

Can you recommend a good Bible commentary? (Preferably a one-volume Bible commentary).

If you prefer, you can also recommend a good study Bible

Theologically, I am from a Reformed and/or conservative Presbyterian theological background

Okay...so far, I have narrowed my Study Bible choices down to 2 Study Bibles - the Hebrew Greek Key Word Study Bible and the Fire Bible Global Study Edition. Thank you all for your excellent recommendations so far!!

Any more Bible commentary or Study Bible recommendations?

Hello Korean-American Christian,

I don't want to appear to be argumentative, but what if the presbyterian theological background you have been raised in is wrong? Would you want to continue in it? Just asking. Would you be willing to think outside that box?

Hello DingDing, I am willing to think outside the box of the Presbyterian theological background that I have been raised in. What theological alternatives did you have in mind?

I don't actually read the commentary. I only use it to review multiple translations at the same time and it has translation in Greek and Hebrew too.

timewerx, thank you. I have used biblehub.com on occasion, but I was not aware that they also have a commentary

Here are the two 2 volume commentary sets and the 2 Study Bibles I would recommend.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary - 2 Volumes OT/NT (from two professors at Dallas Theological Seminary, Walvoord & Zuck)
The Believer's Bible Commentary - 2 Volumes OT/NT by MacDonald

*(if you can afford both sets, I'd recommend getting them)

The MacArthur Study Bible
The ESV Study Bible

*(these two Study Bibles are my favorites because of their extensive commentary .. for a study Bible that is .. the ESV Study Bible is only available in the ESV however, MacArthur's is available in several translations // and both are available as part of the Logos Library System .. as are the 2 volume sets I recommended above)

Also agreeing with Timewerx, BibleHub has some excellent commentaries available for free online. See: John 1:1 Commentaries: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

If you want to dsicover ways in which mainstream Christianity too often is teaching traditions of men, rather than what the Bible truly says, I recommend Psalm 119 Ministries starting with the Sabbath Day and/or The Pauline Paradox. All their vids are often visually beautiful, very listener friendly, but at the same time highly scholarly in both history and Scriptures. You can find the vids on their site and on You Tube.

KJV holman bible is the best i've ever had in my short life so far. The commentaries are excellent, the suggested scriptures that support one scripture are perf, timelines are great, description of each book is great etc.

I really don't believe in commentaries. Commentaries are just man's thoughts about God. To find God's thoughts, study the Bible carefully, prayerfully, and with your heart open to the Holy Spirit.
