I have been trying to understand the Holy Spirit more.

Is the Holy Spirit a person or a force?

Is our consience the Holy Spirit?

Do you need to speak in tongues to have the Holy Spirit.

Is the Holy Spirit Our protector?

Last but not least what is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

I personly like use a reversal technique when trying to understand this, for example :
Adolf Hitler has a book called mien kamf ( or something like that) and even tho he is now dead he has followers called Neo Nazies and these guys are of one mind and have the same belief in a man and his book , therefore I believe they share the same spirit , an unholy spirit , a spirit of predjudess and hatred and anyone who believes in Hitler and his book will share the in same spirit .
Now if we reverse this back to christianity we have :
A leader called Jesus...a book called the bible...and followers who believe in the man and his book and they call themselves christians , these are also of one mind and same belief in Jesus and his book and therefore share the same spirit , the Holy spirit or spirit of God , they all drink from the same fountain thus having the same spirit .

Galations 5

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Just my personal view.

i'll answer what i can and to the best of my ability. to my understanding, speaking in tongues is evidence that one has the Holy Spirit...so in that case, one would need to have the Holy Spirit in order to speak in tongues. Otherwise, people would just be jabbering away, saying and meaning nothing. Okay, and the Holy Spirit was sent to give us comfort. Therefore it is called "the comforter" because Jesus left us and sent the Holy Spirit so that we could have guidance without Him.

That is interesting Brain never thought of that but it makes sense.

Do you believe we have to speak in tongues to have the Holy Spirit?

Is this evidence of tongues?

Do we have to have evidence?

Who speaks in tongues do you Brain?

If we believe do we have the Holy Spirit?

I have been trying to understand the Holy Spirit more.

Is the Holy Spirit a person or a force?

God is a spirit. The Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead. And, He can be quite forceful. :) Romans 8:25-28 shows that the HS is the one Who comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness.

Yesterday at 10:49 PM Evee said this in Post #1

Is our consience the Holy Spirit?

No. However, He will make us more conscious of our thoughts and actions.

Yesterday at 10:49 PM Evee said this in Post #1

Do you need to speak in tongues to have the Holy Spirit.

No. All you need to do is ask the HS to fill you. Speaking in tongues is an evidence of being baptized in the HS.

In John 7:38, 39 Jesus was speaking to the multitude (not just the disciples) when He said, (Amplified) "He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water. But He was speaking here of the Spirit, Whom those who believed (trusted, had faith) in Him were afterward to receive. For the [Holy] Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).

Here, He talks about being filled with the Holy Spirit and what it will be like.

Now we can jump forward to John 20:21 - 23, Jesus has risen from the dead and revealed Himself to His disciples. "Then Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! [Just] as the Father has sent Me forth, so I am sending you. And having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit!"

Here, Jesus breathes on them and says, "receive". At this point I believe they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

However, look at Acts 1:3 - 5 (Amplified) "To them also He showed Himself alive after His passion (His suffering in the garden and on the cross0 by [a series of] many convincing demonstrations [unquestionable evidences and infallibel proofs], appearing to them during forty days and talking [to them] about the things of the kingdom of God. And while being in their company and eating at the table with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised, Of which [He said] you have heard Me speak. For John baptized with water, but not many days form now you shall be baptized with (placed in, introduced into) the Holy Spirit.

Yesterday at 10:49 PM Evee said this in Post #1

Is the Holy Spirit Our protector?

Yes. Among many other things. He guides us away from immorality, impurity, indecency, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, divisions, party spirits, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like (Galations 5:19-21)

Yesterday at 10:49 PM Evee said this in Post #1

Last but not least what is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

I believe that would be to have full knowledge and understanding of Him and what He has done in our life but choosing to walk away, turning our back on Him.

:) Hi Quaffer, yes once again good Godly answers.

I wondered if it was the Holy Spirit convicting me when I knew I had done something I should have not.

I have the Holy Spirit but needed to know more.

So the Holy Spirit to me sometimes feel like a force.

It is like this to me sometimes the Holy Spirit saying I am telling you Evee you are wrong and you need to know this and consider your ways. :help: He is there to help.

Just how I feel sometimes!!

Is the Holy Spirit a person or a force?

Without a doubt the Holy Spirit is a person. Of course, He is a spirit, but the bible shows Him having all the attributes of a person. In the bible, He is pictures as doing the kinds of things that persons do. For example, He exhibits intellect (Rom 8:26,27; 1 Cor 2:10,11); He is shown with the ability to choose or make decisions (Acts 13:2; 15:28; 16:6,7; 20:28; 1 Cor 12:11); He speaks (John 16:13,14; Acts 8:29; 13:2; 1 Tim 4:1; Rev 2:7); He teaches (John 14:26; 1 Cor 2:13); and He experiences emotions or feelings such as love (Rom 15:30) and grief (Eph 4:30; Isa 63:10). The Spirit is treated like a person in scripture. He may be lied to (Acts 5:3), tested (Acts 5:9); blasphemed (Matt 12:31), and insulted (Heb 10:29). More specifically, the Holy Spirit is a divine person. The bible portrays Him as being one with the Father and the Son (Matt 28:19; 1 Cor 12:4-6; 2 Cor 1:21,22; 13:14; Eph 4:4-6; 1 Pet 1:2). Divine characteristics are applied to the Spirit: He is eternal, omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. The fact that Jesus says that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgiveable makes no sense whatsoever unless He is divine.

Is our consience the Holy Spirit?

I think Quaffer's answer to this was acceptable.

Do you need to speak in tongues to have the Holy Spirit.

Absolutely not. I personally do not believe that the gift of tongues is still in operation today so this would not make sense to me at all. The Holy Spirit indwells all believers at the time of baptism (Acts 2:38). I have heard many Charismatics say that tongues is the evidence of the Holy Spirit, but this has no scriptural bearing at all. We have the Holy Spirit as Christians living within us to empower us to live righteously. That is His primary function. We had no possibility of "being holy as God is holy" before we became Christians. As a Christian, God's Holy Spirit indwells us to give us the power needed to walk in a manner that is pleasing to God. Even if the gift of tongues is in operation today, it is not evidence of the Holy Spirit, nor is it something that all Christians are expected to do (1 Cor 12:30).

I don't think speaking in tongues means you have the holy spirit , there are plenty of christians who don't speak in tongues who have the holy spirit , for example : Catholics - JWs etc etc .

And yes i believe the holy spirit protects us , for example : If one believes , then you probibly won't go out and rob a bank and have to spend time in jail , so yes...of course it protects us . Well thats my view anyway .

I believe in speaking tongues but I believe once we accept jesus that is when we get the Holy Spirit.

I had a church friend who spoke in tongues.

I kid you not she would say bobba ta killa and I always heard it as bottle of tequilla.

The funny thing she used to love tequilla when she was of the world.

I am not making fun now mind you but just pointing out a weird thing. :D

Hey we can find laughter in anything!!

The first time it happened to me I never Knew what the Holy Spirit was.

I had went to a reservor looking at the water I had my Bible with me.

I was just sitting praying and like wow out of the blue my tongue would not put out the words I had been trying for.

I was kinda babbling, it felt like I was tongue tied and had no control over my tongue.

I have to say I scared myself so badly I started the car and got out of there.

Hey I am used to it now no problem.

How about stammering lips has anyone ever had that to happen?

Jesus said the first sign with LANGUAGES (tounges) was in Acts 1: 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

The HOLY 120 went down the stairs and "hit the streets with "power of the HOLY Spirit being a "witness" about HIM speaking in LANGUAGES which was needed as a supernatural sign to others about the "power from on high." The real everlasting sign of the HOLY Spirit is HOLINESS and it will always be HOLINESS as a sure sign of Christ....

Bless you all via the Truth of the WORD!

Hi Brain Damage actually in my case it is just what God gave me to use when I do not know what or how to pray.

Some people can interept but I can't cause I don't even know what I am saying when speaking in tongues.

Dear Evee,

When you pray in tongues, you are praising/worshipping/thanking the Father. Period. It is your spirit praying.

The purpose is two-fold:

1) So that God is praised and worshipped and thanked as He should be (and so that He doesn't have to make the rocks do it).

2) With the hopeful outcome you will be momentarily or for longer filled with the Holy Ghost who came upon you and made His home upon you when you received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost - assuming you did.

---------

All human beings have the ability to pray in tongues, for all humans have a spirit. It's just that without the HG Baptism upon us, who in the world would we be talking to?

And all Christians have the ability to momentarily or for longer get filled with the Holy Ghost as a result of their praising Him - whether in tongues, or in our own language (if from the spirit and not our flesh).

(And many, likely even most, of the interpretations you hear are nonsense and of the flesh - the genuine is very rare today, in the West at least.)

-----------

So, keep on praisin'!

bro. jim

Evee,

I wanted to answer your question about the spirit convicting you.

That feeling you have is your conscious that God uses to convict you of a sin.

Praying in tounges is evidence that you have been through the fire baptism. John the Baptist said that he baptized in water but the one who would come after him would baptism in fire, this is what he meant.

The water baptism is definatley the part about salvation and dying with christ on the cross but the fire baptism is the part where God pours out his spirit on you.

When God pours out his spirirt like he did at Pentecost some pretty wierd things start to happen. if we are not prepared to accept these wierd things he won't force them on us but we miss out on a big part of what God is doing.

The word spirit has alot more meaning than peopl ascribe to it.
