The roses are slowing down now and there are some weeds sitting pretty here and there in the garden. The lemon tree is loaded and I can see baby feijoas decorating the feijoa tree. They won't be ready for a while yet...

How long do the roses last, js? Here they sometimes flower until late autumn, although I've only noticed that in recent years. I think you said the feijoas are your Christmas trees. Are they autumn/winter flowering? :)

We have purple and yellow crocus and daffodils in our garden at the moment. The snowdrops are nearly over. We have cyclamen coming up but I can't wait to get out there and tidy up :)
I remember you saying, in previous years, that you were longing to get into the garden as spring approaches, ley. :) The purple and yellow mix of your bulbs sounds beautiful.

Both of your gardens seem to be doing well. I'm still on a learning curve where growing bulbs in containers is concerned. :DI planted some snowdrops this year, but only two flowered. :( However some tulips are beginning to come through, but only one of last year's hyacinths is showing any growth.

Roses over here can flower well into autumn too, Sue. :)

Well, the pohutukawa is NZ's Christmas tree. The feijoa tree produces miniature versions of the pohutukawa flower. Both types of tree flower in early summer, around December and the feijoa fruit is ready in late autumn/early winter.

I did a miniscule amount of weeding this afternoon and was very pleased with the result. Now to just multiply that effort by hundreds and everything'll be lovely in the garden...:D

Our tulips are beginning to come through now :) I love spring time. I think I am going to try and get some help in the garden this year.
I haven't started sowing any seeds yet.
I love the spring bulbs and also the buds appearing on the trees and shrubs. Everything looks so green and fresh too. :)Do you always sow seeds Ley? My father used to, but I've tended to buy bedding plants, except years ago when I grew veg from seed.

I went by both of my gardens this past week, and they are just wonderful. I pick up some onion and bell pepper while I was there. Making a stew for the weekend, that turned out perfect.
How lovely! I used to enjoy picking fresh veg, and herbs, from the garden back in the day! :)

Oh I can see where I made my mistake, js, looking back at your earlier posts. The picture of the pohutukawa tree is amazing. :)

I need to start weeding soon, and put the pots back into their summer positions. I can't help laughing at my one hyacinth, which is in a long trough which holds four. I just don't know what happened to the other three! :D

The garden has most of the pots back in their right places now and growth is beginning in them. The daisies have shot up but not yet opened, although a couple I picked for indoors have opened and stayed fresh for two weeks. The tulips are just opening and the blossom on the trees is fully out. It is so beautiful. :) The Lord's creation continues to amaze me.

An almost TOTAL mess

But, I haven't been able to get 'out-there' and do much, of anything

Maybe I will get opportunity to 'hack-back' before I leave here [no news on 'that' yet! ]

Our overloaded lemon tree and feijoa tree are dropping their fruit fast now. Neighbouring children are coming over most days to gather a few feijoas up, and we are giving away bags of them too. The camellias have their flower buds now, but they won't open for a few months yet. I love camellias, specially red ones.

What do the feijoas taste like, js? Does your tree keep you in fruit throughout the summer? I like camellias too. Are they winter-flowering in NZ? :)

My tulips are doing well, but everything else is not flowering yet. I'm planning to do hanging baskets soon.

It's hard to describe the taste of feijoas, Sue, as I can't think of anything that tastes remotely like them. They are quite sweet and have a slightly grainy taste is the best I can say. :D The fruit is ready in autumn, I've discovered, as I'd forgotten when the fruit was ready last year.

Yes, camellias flower around June/July over here, in winter. I love camellias because when I was little, my nana and grandpa had a beautiful red camellia on their front lawn. I loved it and have done ever since. We've had at least one camellia at almost every house we've ever lived in and not having a camellia just seems wrong to me. :D

Thanks js, I think I have an idea of what feijoas taste like. :) I wonder if any are exported. I'll have a look in the supermarket next time I'm there.

I imagine that camellias like mild, but not very hot, temperatures if they are winter flowering in NZ. What a lovely reason for growing them, js. I've always loved roses since seeing them in my grandmother's back garden as a small child, and always love having them. There are none here, but maybe this year...:)

I love roses too, Sue. They are my favourite flower, especially the scented deep red ones. Yum yum. :D So many flowers I love - pansies with their smiley faces are a firm favourite and poppies are beautiful when planted en masse. Really love them.

I love those too, and the scent of roses is gorgeous. I feel as if I can smell them just by seeing photos of them. I cannot decide if they are my favourite flower, or daffodils. I love the sunshine yellow of the traditional daffs, but then roses are beautiful. :)

The garden today was under a shower of hail stones! Yesterday evening I wondered if I should water the troughs and tubs as the surface of the soil felt very dry. No need now though. The forecast has said frost in some places, so I'll wait a little while before any new planting.

Well, our new home has virtually no garden, Sue - just lawn and a few severely trimmed camellias. They have been trained to resemble standard roses, which is a bit different. I've never seen the shrubs trained that way before. I don't really like it much, but as long as they flower, it will be good. :) We also have a couple of flax bushes. Most NZ gardens feature a flax bush somewhere. :D There are a couple of planter boxes as well, so I may pop some seedlings into them.

Daffodils and bluebells are so quintessentially English to me. I've seen pics online of bluebells in woods in England. I love the beautiful picture they paint. So romantic-looking...

Yes, a carpet of bluebells in the wood is beautiful, js. The daffs too.:)

Your description of your garden gives a good picture of it. So you've left your lemon trees behind? :( I hope you enjoy your new garden and that the camellias flower - strange how they have been trained. :D Also that you have fun with your planter boxes. I've enjoyed growing things in tubs and troughs. This is a small garden too, but I've found it enough to deal with, and have added more planters each year as time and finance permits. The bulbs have finished now and I really must do the hanging baskets and buy a few more new plants!

I'm racking my brains to think what I've seen on TV recently about NZ. (It was since the whales crisis.) Everything looked so green and fresh, with some exotic plants. I imagine it is a very pleasant place to be. :)

Hi, Sue :)

Yes, the lemon tree and the feijoa tree have been abandoned by us. :D The new person was very excited about moving into our old home. Hope he still feels that way after clearing away tons of fallen feijoas as the tree was still loaded with fruit when we left. Perhaps they will be folk who turn them all into jams and puddings. Not my buzz, I'm afraid.

The camellias are actually flowering right now and all appear to have white blooms. They don't have as many flowers as usual cos of the way they have been pruned, though.

I might get some pansies for the planter boxes as I love them and haven't had any for such a long time. Yes, I agree re small gardens. There was a time when I could spend hours out in the garden, but it's a bit much for my back these days. A few flowers here and there will be lovely without being arduous. The planter boxes are raised too, which is cool. I also have several neat flower pots which my sister gave to me and I could set them up on the deck if I want to, with pretty flowers or whatever in them. Gotta have a bit of something around to look at, eh? :)

NZ is looking superb right now after all the rain we received in April, though there are scars on the landscape at present too from the slips that resulted from all that rain. Hopefully no more cyclone remnants heading for NZ - just polar blasts heading up from the Arctic to contend with now. :D :bbrr:
