How's it going?
Since I'm new to this forum, it seems like an introduction is an order.

I am an agnostic atheist, which I think begs the question, "Why am I here".
I can promise you that I am not here to try to change anyone's beliefs. I have been part of a few forums over the years, moderated one, and am currently the administrator/unofficial SRE(If I can even call it that) for another. I am also the member of an atheist forum(coming from there, I know how frustrating it can be to have your forum invaded by someone who thinks a thread is going to convince them to change their metaphysical stance). I also won't mind if you feel so compelled to try to change mine(Though I am not looking for help converting). I am mainly here because I would like to get to speak with and learn from people that I probably don't have as much of an opportunity to speak with in my day to day life.

Bit of a backstory.
I grew up as a Catholic, and went to an Opus Dei Catholic school from 6th - 12th grade. There I took quite a few apologetics courses, and spent the last two years of HS and a year of college taking apologetics very seriously. Over time however, my positions on a lot of these issues changed. I moved from Catholicism to Agnosticism to Agnostic Atheism. I graduated last Fall with a degree in Food Science, and I am currently looking for a job...ideally working in a lab while I study for the GRE.

As far as a career goes, I am very interested in addressing food security/sustainabilty issues around the world. I am an avid supporter of entomophagy(I eat bugs), and have even hosted events and double blind taste tests to show that people can enjoy eating insects. I am also very interested in PFALs(Plant Factories w/ Artificial Lighting) and have begun working on building my own Food Computer recently.

Anyway, bit of a lengthy introduction as it is, so I'll cut it off there.

tl;dr

Haha! I'm sure it does. ;)

So....what do they taste like? :D
Well there are roughly 2000 known edible species out there. They have all kinds of different flavors. Probably the most common insect you will see in the US is the house cricket/superworm. Both when toasted have a bit of a nutty flavor, and when sauteed have a very subtle shellfish flavor. In mexico they eat grasshoppers, and it's hard for me to pinpoint the flavor of them, but once they are toasted, they make an amazing snack. I am a little biased here, but I enjoyed them more than things like potato chips.
But there are also ants called honeypot ants which store nectar in their abdomens. They have a sweet flavor to them, and other ants which produce an herbicide in the Amazons, and they taste like lemon(they are yellow too!). Maguay Larvae when roasted and lightly coated with I believe olive oil, taste a whole lot like french fries.

Have you heard any of Revi Zacharias' stuff? Curious to know what you think.

Also, welcome.

Only vaguely aware. Happy to look into it when I have some free time.
Edit: My first impression. The real face of Atheism was a poor choice for a book name. Stuff like "The Real Face of" X sets off a mental heuristic to be suspicious of the author.

What I find so interesting about entomophagy, and about food-eating in general, is that taste preferences are so closely connected with what you're exposed to as a kid. If you feed your kid bugs, they're almost certainly not going to have any trouble eating them as an adult. "eww" is learned!

There's a lady on youtube, emmy, she has a thing called "bugmas" every year where she eats bugs every day and rates them. She also has no problem with eating bugs.

What's your food computer? sounds interesting.

Welcome to CF, aristocatt! There are other atheists/agnostics here, so I'm sure you'll bump into some of them.

Whatever background you have, that's fine..........bring it with you! I know I did when I visited over at one of those "other" forums not so long ago. ;) (Some there were pleasant; some were a bit more challenging toward me for having ventured outside of my "Christian Zone.")

Peace,

Yeah, I first learned about entomophagy through a report issued by the FAO. After reading it, I endeavored to give bugs a shot, but it wasn't as easy as just popping them into my mouth and going "awesome!". That first bug, I was a little queasy, but it doesn't even phase me now. Eating habits are formed at such a young age, it's really important you feed your kids well so learn to love the good stuff!

The food computer I am building is based off of this.
OpenAg Initiative — Farming for the Future
It's basically a closed enviornment hydroponics system which monitors all the various inputs. I do some computer science stuff in my spare time, and am really interested in the datascience aspect of the project as well. I don't think PFAL's are the future everywhere, but I think they will serve a niche in the future, and optimizing the growth models using what is essentially a distributed network of food computers so that the information is open source, to me, is fascinating.

You eat bugs?

Now I feel bad about my "science fiction" entry in this post: (Amusing) Ideas for writers
Lol. Someone asked me awhile ago if I would ever consider dating someone who refused to eat bugs. I told them, I would be happy to date someone who didn't eat bugs, I can't really fault someone for being grossed out. I would be frustrated if they didn't have faith in me to know that feeding our children bugs was a good idea though...especially if they would be fine feeding them McDonalds. I don't think I have the luxury to demand my significant other eat bugs though...my potential mate probably does have the luxury of expecting her lover not eat bugs. There's a mismatch in the supply and demand for both positions!

Howdy.
I know on the atheist forum I am a part of we occasionally get some theists who are only there to attempt to convert us. We also have some awesome Christian, Muslim, Spiritual, etc contributors. The former is frustrating no matter where you go or what your beliefs are. The latter I think is a huge benefit to any community. They were a part of what inspired me to branch out to a new forum like this!
