I don't know that I would call them false prophets. They just thought God had taken Elijah to another place, nearby.
I believe they were possibly right, that Elijah went into "the sky" by a whirlwind, and not into, some otherly realm. Movement to another earthly locale is what happened much as to Philip (Acts 8:39). There is a letter from Elijah (2 Chronicles 21:12) after the whirlwind which suggested he merely finished his prophetic course, and was replaced by Elisha; but didn't actually never die, or, make some miraculous ascent into "the other-worldly realm of spirits"
