Actually, Zuckerberg donated 37 million shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which makes generous donations to Planned Parenthood. The 18 million shares donated in 2014 were worth $55 a share at the time--they are now worth $135, so the $992 million is now worth more than one and a half times as much---perhaps $2.5 billion...and that's just the 18 million, not the 19 million shares he gave in 2012.

Would you boycott Facebook because you disapprove of Zuckerberg's donations?

Why or why not?

Does it make you happy that he helped fund abortion? I think it probably does.

I would not boycott Facebook. I don't pay for it and I can criticize the move on his very creation (which he stole, actually) with no negative consequences.

I have immediate family on two continents. I have extended family all over the country. Facebook is a great way for me to keep in touch with friends I've had since kindergarten and family members.

It has its minuses, yes--occasional right-wing claptrap, but it also has Fr. James Martin, SJ...

I doubt that the Silicon Valley foundation is going to completely replace the $500 million Planned Parenthood could lose, but if FB keeps soaring who knows? I've made some money on FB myself (but don't hold it currently).

Would you invest in FB stock?

I think you can find out how your 401K is invested, but mutual funds are pretty fluid. There are socially conscious mutual funds--I think Vanguard has one, but I think it would be pretty hard to micromanage 401K funds.

I haven't owned FB for more than a year, it's not really a stock for sixty-somethings' portfolios.

The OP sounds like funding that organization is a good thing. Odd coming from a Catholic.

The majority of funding that goes to PP is for maternal care services that end up reducing the amount of abortions overall. If you want to stop abortion, defunding PP is like shooting yourself in the foot.

This really isn't about that...there are plenty of threads about whether government should fund PP.

I do think that, with friends like Mark Zuckerberg, PP isn't going anywhere soon. And I wonder whether people feel inclined to boycott FB or not invest in their stock.

No, it's not. And I don't care what the majority goes for. Some goes to abortions. There are hundreds of other places that perform the same services, and they don't kill babies.

They also don't get government funding for those services, and aren't able to service nearly as many people.

Hogwash. If PP closed, the other clinics would flourish.

I find that highly unlikely, especially considering the concentrated effort to reduce access to women's health care services in any form.

Tell you what, create an organization as large as PP that gets government funding and provides all of the same services PP does save abortion, and I'll be 100% behind you. Until then, I'm skeptical of your claims.

Why when its already done. And PP does not provide maternal care. Even Zukebergs money. Recent investigations have shown that.

There is not an effort to reduce access to health care.

On the topic of boycotting. That is something that I generally am cautious about. It can impact innocent people. St. Pope John Paul II warned about boycotting things without due thought. I am not saying it should never be done.

Guess we better defund Israel as well, if we want to be consistent that is.

You can't be Pro-Life AND Pro-Israel at the same time..gotta pick one.

I agree that we should stop sending money to Israel

but I do think your view that you can not be pro-Life and pro-Israel at the same time is a bit over the top
