Is it okay for the left to go after Trump's wife and daughters and sons?

No.

For years, it was considered off limits to smear wives and children of politicians; save in cases of extreme and blatant misconduct.

When Bill Clinton was President, some nitwit did some rather distasteful and content light article about her. (As I recall, it was centered around her being 'plain' looking; I could be mistaken.) The 'reporter' was shut down rather quickly by a bipartisan and non-government expression of revulsion.

When First Lady Clinton started her crusade for socialized medicine, the concept was attacked as incompetent and wasteful. She - for some reason - took this as a personal attack, which it wasn't, and was rather vicious in her rebuttals. A precedent, in her case.

First Lady Bush (41) was attacked as being a drunk driving and murderer. In fact, Mrs. Bush was very open about the incident in her youth where she was indeed intoxicated and caused a traffic accident in which someone died. The incident was over twenty years in the past at the time. President Bush's two daughters acted like young daughters and did some 'young person' stupid things - like attempting to use false ID to buy booze. They were caught. The liberal press attempted to make hay of the event, but President Bush handled his children AND their rather ill-considered actions and the general public dismissed it.

Lately, First Lady Obama went out of her way to draw attention to herself and was handled quite gingerly by the conservative press. The liberal press attempted to glorify her actions and person, without much success.

Of course, President Trump's family will be treated like the President himself. The liberal press wants to smear him and will treat his family the same. Is it right? No. Will that matter? No.

Word is they are and they are on twitter. If you support them you support him. I'm not on twitter or facebook but you and yours probably are. Help him and them if you can. Or should they be trashed to get to him by proxy?
I'm not on Twitter. However, many of Trump's adult children are overtly political. When you're an adult and get yourself involved in the political realm on you father's behalf, then you are definitely not immune from any and all criticism that comes your way.

If the kids not an adult it's not right. As far anyone believing this is solely something "leftists" do that belief isn't based on anything found in reality. All political persuasions have despicable trolls MORE then eager to use internet anonymity to be as trollish as they can.

It's never ok to attack children, and I would say that if the adult relations don't act as political advisors or policy makers then they shouldn't be the subject of criticism. The right attacked Hillary Clinton, when she was First Lady, particularly because of her policy work.

What about in the case of a spouse who doesn't want to be part of politics, but the other spouse runs anyways and becomes president? Should they be criticized? I mean they sort of had no choice in the matter. Especially if your the first lady. Which on a side note, if a woman were to win what would the husband be called "First sir"?

lol, thats a rather odd take on that...

people on both sides have been attacking each other for years now, and to suggest its only been done by "the left" is absurd. there were people on this forum insisting that mrs. obama was a transvestite...on this very forum!

This is what is known as 'changing ground'. How many people on this site are members of the 'media' and have reported this story as unvarnished truth? I trust you grasp the difference.

In the United Kingdom that position is the "Royal Consort". I doubt if that would 'fly' here.

Well,I feel that might describe Donald Trump's wife, who seems to have little to no involvement in policy making, when compared to his daughter Ivanka, his son in law, and his adult sons. I find it uncalled for when people criticize Melania, and I think she seems like a fine person.

Yeah, she doesn't look thrilled to be first lady. But obviously she has to try and do it since she has no choice. I feel for her.

the OP isn't speaking exclusively of journalists, or hasn't been clear about that...she mentions twitter and facebook and only references "the left".

Twitter and Facebook are not the media.

Its like when someone says "This thing on Wikipedia says the answer!". Psh. The internet is really a terrible place for "answers" since you can find any answer you need at any site.
