That reminds me of someone asking me what artists I liked, I mentioned some artists and albums, "Oh, so you like oldies." They're not oldies!
Regardless of the age of the referring person, "oldies" should only refer to music recorded 25 before their parents were born.

My kids would have to refer to music from the 1930's and earlier as oldies. Yes, they are oldies but they were not considered rock and roll.

Freed did not tie 'rock and roll' to music until 1951.

He released one of the top selling albums with the release of All Eyez on Me (first hip hop double album), he inspired an entire generation of musicians, and is considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, of course he'll find his way into the hall of fame. I think you've mentioned other great artists that should be inducted, but that's really subjective. I would add the caveat, I've never considered "rock and roll" is not synonymous with "rock" as I've always considered rock an outgrowth.

...And how much were those album sales juiced by his death being in the news?

I'm with those who are saying that while Tupac should readily go into a hip-hop or rap hall of fame, there are far too many people who more directly affected the world of rock and popular music who should have been in line ahead of him.

There's people who should have been in line ahead of Pearl Jam, too, but at least with them you can clearly point to how they affected the world of rock.

Awesome. I'm especially happy for Pearl Jam because they are partially credited for my existence, haha. My parents met in 1992 at Lollapalooza where the band was one of the most popular acts. I grew up listening to their songs.

You made a bunch of people in this thread feel old because you said your parents met in 1992. I was still under 10 then. :p

On my most recent birthday the year I was born made my then eight-year-old sister have a sudden realization, and she blurted out "you were born in the last millennium!" She wanted to know what the 90s were like, and was dissatisfied that I was too young to have any memories of them, haha. She made me feel old.

I did grow up on 90s music, though. My mom made a mixtape (remember those?) for my older brother and then a CD for me of music that was popular when we were born, and I listened to them both often. I think early 90s music was superior. He got Pearl Jam, 10,000 Maniacs, Green Day, Nirvana, Beck. I got Will Smith, Backstreet Boys, and Spice Girls. I did get some awesome music from acts at the Lilith Fair, though, like Sarah McLachlan and Natalie Merchant.
