The oldest person ever: 122, not 120, like the Bible says...

Jeanne Louise Calment (February 21 1875 - August 4 1997) had the longest (reliably reported) lifespan for any human being in history. Her lifespan has been thoroughly documented by scientific study. She married her second cousin Fernand Calment in 1896, and survived her only child and only grandchild. She died at the age of 122 years 164 days in Arles, France; the same town she was born in. She said that in her younger years, she met Vincent van Gogh, later describing him as "dirty, badly dressed and disagreeable."

I wonder what she thought of Monet.

So, then, if the Bible says that people will only live to be 120, what does the fact that she lived to be older than God told her to mean?

Translation: Genesis is not literal!
Thought that God told Noah that they had 120 years to repent. Then he would wipe them out....?

[VERSE=Genesis 6:3,KJV]And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.[/VERSE]QV please:
John Wesley said:
Yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years - So long will I defer the judgment they deserve, and give them space to prevent it by their repentance and reformation. Justice said, cut them down; but mercy interceded, Lord, let them alone this year also; and so far mercy prevailed, that a reprieve was obtained for six score years.

If a science textbook says Pluto is our 9th planet, should we throw out the whole book?

I must wonder where did these people go?
Some time ago, while ranting myself, I predicted that if these guys had to discuss just science alone, and not be able to vent & ridicule God and His people, that they would file out of here like an emery board.

(Or something to that effect.)

What a nutty concept. Is that what you really think? Wow.

And, what is this 'ranting myself' all about? Just curious.

120 years was the time needed to build the ark and prepare for the 'end of all flesh'.

Yes, but that's myth, like talking snakes.

The enchanter wasn't a snake until God pronounced judgment on it. The narrative suggests this being stood upright while it conversed with Eve.

Genesis 3:14
And the Lord God said unto the serpent (enchanter), Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt (future tense) thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

"My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." (Genesis 6:3)

Genesis 23:1-And the life of Sarah was one hundred years and twenty years and seven years
;
[these were] the years of the life of Sarah.

Since the Word of God does not contradict (Ask me about Mathew 10:34), I have come to the conclusion that Genesis 6:3 refers to the lifespan of Males. However, If a man ever lives past 120, then my interpretation is wrong and another one will have to be sought. I have not yet read the Hebrew translation of Genesis, but if a man ever lived past 120, I would say the man in Genesis 6:3 is referring to all those God chose not to live past his commandment.

The context of Genesis 6:3 was the coming flood, not man's lifespan. God was giving man 120 years to repent (three times the normal grace period of 40 years).

Actually Methuselah did.

Genesis 5:27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.

It means that God added to her years for reason(s) He saw fit.

Isaiah 38:5 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.

Proverbs 3:1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
Proverbs 3:2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

It's considered wise, before one finalizes his assessment of a passage in the Bible, to take all the verses that pertain to the subject into account; including what science has to say about it.

This passage is a reference to man or Adam. There is no mention of women or Eve.

Now you are stretching it way too thin. Surely you realise that the English bible uses man to mean mankind? Or do you believe that Genesis 6:7 promises to kill all men and not the women?

We would have to see if the Hebrew word for man in one verse is the same Hebrew word for man in another verse, Since there are instances where one english word can be used to represent multiple other Hebrew words. Synonyms can represent similar things while also representing different, subtle meanings, Such as scared vs terrified vs nervous. One word in English can represent a broad range of realities and its translation would depend on the readers preconceptions. If someone could find a website to read the Hebrew easily that would be very helpful.
