'It's terrible': Winnipeg homeless shelters worry after woman found dead outside

Homeless man ‘froze to death’ in Birmingham on coldest night

The wait list for a shelter can extend up to three weeks to a month just to get in. Homeless people freeze to death all the time in the winter. The above two articles are recent articles about homeless people freezing to death in Birmingham, England and Winnipeg, Canada.

Homeless veterans freeze to death in the US, Canada, and Europe- while refugees get free housing, and the Chinese buy up the property and inflate prices. Shelters are always over-crowded during the winter and cannot take care of everyone.

What should be done about people freezing to death in the winter?

What do refugees have to do with anything? The issues you speak of are not a zero-sum game. How about we work to help the homeless rather than promote false ideas that someone else is causing the problem? The people that like to use vulnerable populations as a scapegoat for issues, it's never been a good look.

Free military sleeping bags. I've woken up covered in ice before, and my bag says it can go down to -50 (haven't had to put it to the test though) They've even got a waterproof Gore-tex shell. You can buy them in bulk.

Open more mental hospitals and get more drug clinics working. Maybe there would be less homeless people. A lot of homeless people do drugs, because of drug addition or feeding a mental problem. Some are to crazy to live a normal life. I'm sure many of these people receive Food stamps and SSI. But waist it on their drug addition or problems.

At one time we had a heated parking garage here that they use to let the homeless people sleep in at night. They had to clear out during the day. It is difficult to get them to clean up after themselves. They leave a mess behind. That is the problem with having shanty towns, the filth and the unhealthy living conditions as well as the crime. The police do not want to go in and police them so they burn them down or tear down the shanty towns and do not provide a place for the homeless people to sleep. "Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head." LUKE 9:58

There are programs in some places that pay for homeless people's first months rent somewhere and get reimbursed once the person gets on welfare. Those programs are life-savers.
Utah provides housing for homeless people. They found that it keeps people more healthy and in the long run they save money on their medical expenses.

Turns out the right way to do something about homelessness is to give people a home.
I wish it were that easy. I have provided LOTS of homes for LOTS of homeless people. It does not take very long before they destroy it.

That's strange. First you give Utah as an example for success, and then you put it down?

Who would have thought.
My home town (Edmonton) is doing the same thing. We've seen about a 30% decrease since 2008. Not bad. Unfortunately, an increase in the number of children.... So, still with problems; but overall, improvement.

The first example was in Utah, the second was in Ohio. I have also lived in Conn. Why you have only lived in one state in your life? I have also spent some time in Florida, they have an interesting homeless population there also.

Florida and other southern states get lots of 'snowbird' homeless in the winter. I know a guy who travelled a circuit that took him from Wisconsin down the east coast, across the southern states to California, up to Washington, and finally back to his home in Wisconsin; all in one year, taking advantage of the homeless programs along the way. They've got their own culture going.

Sounds like a great life. Glad that they've got it made....

Many of them wouldn't trade it for a normal life. They love the freedom of being 'on the bum'.

That is true for some, but others are not homeless on their on free will, but due things they have done or had happen to them. Utah gets it right, the way to end homelessness is to get them into housing, and then once they're stable enough physically and possibly psychologically, you help get them employment.
