Marvin, even if I tried a good systematic approach to my theology, I find the following passages concerning the children of Israel, or of promise.
Isaiah 1:4
Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
7 Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
8 And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.
9 Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.
10 Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
I cannot just close my eyes to a passage as such, and think it means nothing. If I say I read and desire to learn from God's whole counsel, I must take what is said here and learn of the ways of God. The nation of Israel had sinned so wickedly, God called them Sodom and Gomorrah. He also said He will hide His eyes from them and not hear their prayers.
However, we are told what God told them what to do. We are told what would happen if they obeyed and what would happen if they disobeyed.
16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
Here God told Israel the remedy for their judgment. Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean, put away evil, and cease to do evil. Learn to do well.
We hear the next verse so much, but never really know what God is telling Israel. God told Israel, 'Let's reason together'. Let's prove, decide, judge, rebuke, correct, be right. God was telling them to judge themselves, rebuke themselves, correct themselves. Then, though their sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow.
Then we read, if the be willing and obedient, they shall eat the good of the land. However, if they refuse and rebel, God will devour them with the sword. Israel had two choice - either be willing and obedient, or refuse and rebel.
I also read these passages -
Isaiah 31:6
Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted.
Jeremiah 3:21
A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the Lord their God.
Jeremiah 32:30
For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the Lord.
Jeremiah 32:32
Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Ezekiel 2:3
And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
Ezekiel 6
5 And I will lay the dead carcases of the children of Israel before their idols; and I will scatter your bones round about your altars.
6 In all your dwelling places the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places shall be desolate; that your altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and your idols may be broken and cease, and your images may be cut down, and your works may be abolished.
All the above passages do not paint a pretty picture of God's chosen children. In fact, it's very dire. If I am wrong for not seeing what you are seeing with the children of promise, I ask the Lord to forgive me and set me straight.
