I know a lot of conservatives look up to her, but from what I have seen she wasn't really the nicest of people and did sometimes say some really cruel things to others. I do on the other hand think that liberals shouldn't return venom with venom, because it's really bad to dance on other graves. In my opinion, I see a woman who really could have done more if she was nicer to others and didn't tie herself to really bad positions. I agree with her anti-abortion efforts, but some of the other issues she stood on were really bad.

With some conservative figures, I think the negative opinions are really just biased stances. However, with Ms. Schlafly it was more justified because she often times did come off as being hypocritical on a few stuff and even some conservatives would have to raise an eyebrow at some of her more mean spirited comments.

I remember hearing about some comments of hers on the Paycheck Fairness act. She wrote that women who earn as much, or more, than men will have trouble finding partners:

Another fact is the influence of hypergamy, which means that women typically choose a mate (husband or boyfriend) who earns more than she does. Men don't have the same preference for a higher-earning mate...

Suppose the pay gap between men and women were magically eliminated. If that happened, simple arithmetic suggests that half of women would be unable to find what they regard as a suitable mate.

Seriously??? So this justifies that a woman who educates herself for a career, works the same hours, performs the same duties, and has the same responsibilities as a man, should be paid less?

I'm sad for her family's loss. But sadder still is that Phyllis lived her life trying to bring back a world that doesn't exist anymore.

I think Slate put it very nicely:

The predecessor to Mama Grizzlies will be best remembered for her staunch opposition to a Constitutional amendment that "would have expanded women’s rights by barring any gender-based distinctions in federal and state laws."

She was widely published and politically prominent. Some might argue that her advocacy of traditional gender roles, which she herself seems to have eschewed, kept millions of women from being able to say the same for themselves.
She may be missed by some people. But most advocates of equal rights for women (also known vernacularly as "feminists") are probably glad to see her and her toxic brand of hypocritical, self-hating misogyny go.

I like the way you say that liberals "shouldn't return venom with venom" and then proceed to trash her on the day of her death.

I didn't know much about her outside of the fact that her son is the one who created that moronic Conservapedia website, but the NYT piece makes her sound like the stereotypical I-got-mine Republican. Perhaps she wouldn't have had such "traditional" views on gender roles if she'd been in a situation or relationship that tried to impose them upon her instead of allowing her to pursue the freedoms that other women were striving for.

its ok because the lady will never have to deal with this kind again....wish I could say the same.

I think it should go for both liberals and conservatives that we as a whole should learn how to treat our opponents without wishing death on each other. I believe it's a lesson all of us should learn.

I think Phyllis may have known our next President will be a woman. And she knew it was time to leave.

I kind of wish we had a different woman who was going to be our first female president. I want someone who is fresh, instead of someone who is a long term career politician.
