Exactly. I think if this guy had guns and explosives, the carnage would've been in the hundreds.

Curiously, we place strong restrictions on heavy explosives. Maybe guys like Erose are right (and I don't think they are) that killers just want to kill and the method of choice is not important to them. It seems to me that an Adam Lanza or an Aurora Theater shooter or a Virginia Tech gunman would have been able to kill even more people if they had used a suitcase of PBX. The thing is, we have strong controls on military grade high explosives and presumably, neither killer had easy access to them as they cannot be generally obtained without serious effort.

Actually about the same, if not less. He didn't quit because of the police; rather he quit when he tired of killing. The man later turned himself in. Because he used knives instead of firearms no one knew what was going on until it was too late. With firearms unless this place was very secluded someone would have heard and alerted police. At maybe some of the victims that had the mental capacity to do so, would have been able to hide or escape.

Disabled can't run away. And he tied the carers/security up.

Have you ever heard a gun shot, and how long that sound travels?

There isn't a lot of guns in Japan, so no one is going to assume a lot of shooting is going to be normal.

The concept of honour? Maybe when they worshipped the Emperor in the second world war. I think Japanese have a lot of pride still as being Japanese as opposed to Chinese for instance. Patriotism.
Child discipline very seriously? Serious education and discipline starts in Junior High. Up till then, education and discipline are similar to western.

What they call or you may perceive as "patriotism," is downright xenophobia. Look at the lives of Hafus in Japan.

Their discipline and respect is quite different from ours. They don't question authority, they do as they are told. Even the Japanese government itself had to step in and try to play the role of a matchmaker because Japanese workers have it embedded that they are obliged to work long shifts with little compensation, which also correlates as to why they don't date as they have no social life. Not too long ago, Japan passed a law that now forces people to take a vacation so as to put a stop in this indoctrination that employee must bend on the whims of their employer.

Years prior, there was a book released called Tokyo Confidential which talked about some oddities in Japan that are unknown to the rest of the world. One subject in particular was and still is very taboo in that some mothers actually had sex with their sons because the mothers believed their son's sexual urges during their high school years will make them forgo their studies and make them prowl about looking for girls. I'm not saying this is indicative of all mothers in Japan as only a very small fraction did or are still doing this, but it relates to how parents in general feel with regards to their children's studies compared to elsewhere in the world. We take it seriously but they take it to another level.

I seriously cannot believe that this tragedy has led to some here demagoguing a whole culture. I've known and worked with Japanese people and they are good people who don't deserve to be trashed.

When will the world learn that guns need to be banned??

It isn't guns that need to be banned. People need Christ --- evangelism is difficult in this high tech world. And Christians need to rethink their parenting. Parents can cause mental illness.

I am a Japanophile, but to downplay the harsh realities and policies within that country is just inviting a clash with reality.

Have you lived there? Sounds like you've chosen a few extreme examples to state your case. You may criticise the Japanese system but it has worked pretty well for them overall. I think China has far more human rights issues to address.

Stop demonizing a community that has just experienced a tragedy.

I'm demonizing policies that are put in place in that country; not the population as a whole. I do the same with regards to the U.S. and every other country.

Why bring up China? If we're going with that train of thought, how about Russia?

Have you applied for citizenship in Japan? Are you Korean? Care to fill us in on how Zainichi Koreans are classified in Japan and the obstacles they face? How about Brazilians: dekasegi?

Zero tolerance towards drugs.

The U.N. has criticized Japan's staunch stance on immigrants and suggested that Japan fix it's population crisis by accepting more immigrants.

Japan does not play around with incarcerated inmates.

These aren't extremes: this is everyday reality in Japan. The only extreme I mentioned were the incestuous mothers, but the overall point I was making with that wasn't the incest part (Even with that said, I did say a small fraction) but that Japanese kids have it more so ingrained that having an education is vital, and you don't hear the same level of excuses of why a child isn't improving in their studies compared to other places, such as the West.

That also applies to employment. If an employer is losing money, there are defects in the products they make, the employees will be quicker to think they did something wrong as opposed to the employer. Also, compare that with the West.
