Leading up to the 2016 federal election what is the best Aussie party?

Last week on radio 3AW, Eddie Maquire and a group of AFL ex players were talking about raising money for a charity (Motor Neurone Disease related). Some were prepared to get in freezing cold water to raise money for it. They were joking around about who would do it. Then Eddie said something like "why don't we get Caroline Wilson to get in I'll chip in 20 000 if she goes in and 50 000 if her head stays under" and then the others said it was a good idea and another guy said "yeah I'll hold her head down!"
So the transcript of the conversation only came available on the weekend. Now there is a media frenzy!
(sorry if the story is slightly skewed)- better to read it on the net.
Personally I don't mind seeing Eddie cop a hiding. he's a real bully. But apparently there is a lot of history between Eddie and Caroline. She's a real tough cookie!

*wince* while I'd hate to be thought of as having anything to say in defence of Maquire or professional sports people in general, is this sexism, or just being a jerk?

Well, he did show racism with Adam Goodes. I don't know the whole history of Caroline. I think she has really been a pain in the neck investigative reporter, exposing a lot of what goes behind the scenes in AFL. She reckons this is about payback for her article recommending he needs to retire from his position as president of Collingwood Football club. I don't usually like women playing the sexism card, but this time I support Caroline Wilson, not Eddie Mac. It is high time he learnt some humility.

Well, we all know the result of the federal election last Saturday, although counting is still going on in marginal seats.

I said to my wife before the election that we were going to end up with a hung parliament.

And I think the senate vote, which was the closest I've ever come to unrolling a scroll, will be even more precarious.

I also cannot see the point in calling for another election. All you'd get would be the same result.

So Turnbull and Shorten will just have to live with it.

Not me! and I didn't vote for the Pauline Xenophobe Party either! Glad to see Nick Xenophon did well. He seems like a voice of reason and intelligence in the whole motley crew or circus as some pundits have described it.

Sadly, so will we!
The Mediscare & tax cuts for big business lies seem to have had the desired effect.

Maybe. You could get people thinking well I better not vote for minor party or we will be back at the polls again in another three months time. I better vote for major party. So it may not be the same. Fraser won in a landslide after the dismissal of the Whitlam govt. While there were many different factors involved I'm sure part of it was to avoid ending up in the same place.

What people are annoyed at is that the most vulnerable are being attacked and health funding cut and then they say yeah lets give big business a tax cut. It has been acknowledged that for many companies that get a tax cut they will just be required to pay that same money to another country's taxation office. So there will be no benefit to them anyway but there will be a definite disadvantage to Australia.

Health cuts already started before the election. X-Rays and pathology were having most of the bulk billing cut. If you have been ordered to have blood tests by the government then that is a little unfair.
Coalition have a long track record of wanting to remove medicare. Of course it will never be sold like Telstra was but that does not mean it can not be privatized. Doctors pay has been frozen for five years. Meanwhile the rent for their surgery goes up. Insurance goes up. Training and equipment goes up. So many expenses go up but their pay stays the same. At the end of the day that leaves them with the choice of abandoning bulk billing or they just tolerate it and have it happen again and again.

Health funding is unsustainable at the present level of escalation.
Tax cuts were aimed at small & mid size businesses who keep the economy growing.
You seem to want everything without any idea how to pay for it.

Budgeting is all a matter of priorities. If we took the money we're spending on our involvement in international armed conflict, and put it back into health care, the sums might look very different (for example).

There are times when we have an international responsibility to participate. Whether all armed conflict is justifiable is very debatable but we would be foolish to abandon our allies completely.
Until we get the budget back under control we will continue to be paying in interest the equivalent of a new hospital every month.

and you are the problem with discussions around politics. You make assumptions (and wrong ones) rather than engaging in discussion.

To be honest people are a big part of the problem. They expect politicians to do something. If a party leader came out and said we will just fund existing programs and services and projects they would be hammered at the polls. However despite a deficit and supposed budget emergency in 2013 Abbott promised new things which cost money. He also promised no cuts to health which he broke. Then they wonder why people don't believe them when they claim Medicare is safe but have already made cuts to it. See the problem?
Government does not allow private health funds to cover 100% of fees. They can cover 100% of scheduled fee so if a patient goes to a hospital and doctor on the health insurers list then they can get free treatment (after paying their excess). However idea behind private is choice of doctor and choice of hospital. So why would people get private insurance when you still have to fork out money yourself every single time? Before govt put in place regulations stating that health funds could only increase their price once a year then some didn't increase their price every 12 months. Now they all increase it. Add in that many have become for profit businesses. This all drives people to the public system.

Is it affordable? Well actually if we were to stop the indefinite offshore detention and go back to old model then it wouldn't take long to pay off the deficit without hitting the most vulnerable while wealthy get all the breaks.

You say it was aimed at small businesses. However I think you forgot to read the whole story. If it was aimed only at small businesses why did no coalition party member in interviews or election coverage dispute it? The answer is because the policy was that initially it would be small businesses then it would be extended to ALL bussinesses.
This was supported by independent experts pointing out that many of these companies will (as I said earlier) just have to pay more tax in other countries instead. IRS in the US allows companies to deduct from their tax any tax they have paid here. When the rate drops it means there will be a gap where Australia will be asking for less tax than the US and therefore the difference will have to be paid to the IRS. So the company won't get to keep money.

I have actually suggested to a few people how we could stop the boats. How we could remove people smugglers from the equation. Of course when a political party says they want to stop people drowning at sea they are telling lies that only people who do not want to know the truth would fall for. If people did not still go to sea then we would not be intercepting boats. We would not need to buy ships for another countries navy. Boats may have reduced but they still go to see. Generally they are intercepted in international waters and are turned around.

Howard sold off Telstra and got heaps of money from the mining boom and everyone thought he was some kind of genius and guru. However look at the profits Telstra made before and lately and then tell me how the govt is better off not having access to that money. Selling off an asset is not good unless you get something in return. We got nothing.

Glad to know you think I am the problem with discussion around politics. TBH I think it is your long rambling posts. Anyhow, those who prayed for a LNP win have had their prayers answered.

However Liberals face a much more hostile parliament. It will more heavily depend on the cooperation and support of the minor parties and even members of the Labor party in order to past acts in parliament.

I voted for Cory Bernadi :)
I agree with him is the safe school scheme and like to see it go. Even so I very much disagree on the liberals on the plebiscite on marriage equality and it is such a waste of money with a cost of over $100 million and that money be much better spent on the elderly, homeless and other disadvantaged sectors of society. Also there is an element of people that have a hatred for gay people and it give them much more publicity if a plebiscite is ever held.

It is rather strange that Cory Bernadi is opposed to multiculturalism even though he is of Italian heritage :doh:Anyway it is good to see that the Liberals have less power in government and will have more accountability to other parties.
