Explain what this doctrine is in the New Testament and why it is important. Here are the relevant passages (if you know any more then quote them):

"14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized [e]in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit." Ac. 8:14-17 (NASB)

"17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”" Ac. 9:17 (NASB)

"14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the [f]presbytery." 1 Tim. 4:14 (NASB)

"6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands." 2 Tim. 1:6 (NASB)

"Therefore leaving the [a]elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to [c]maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. " Heb. 6:1-2 (NASB)

As far as I am aware those are the pertinent New Testament passages. There are also several Old Testament passages involving the "laying on of the hands," which apparently can be good or also bad. Explain what the doctrine means in the New Testament.

I don't know that the 'doctrine' means much different in the New Testament than it does as compared to the Old Testament; it is first mentioned in Scripture in Gen. 48:14, in a ceremony involving Jacob. It is also referenced as being used by Jesus in Matt. 9:18 and Luke 6:19. Typically, the laying on of hands was used to designate some type of favor, (normally spiritual favor) or to pass on some type of quality of excellence or title. The Levitacal priests utilized the laying on of hands to transfer the sins of one (person) into/onto another (the sacrificial lamb). (Which is where I assume you were going with the 'can be good or bad' statement: 'good' for the person, 'bad' for the sacrifice).

The laying on of hands was also used by Aaron to consecrate the priesthood. (Exodus 29, Lev. 8:9).

See also Acts 6:6, Acts 13:3 for other examples of laying on of hands,, used in these verses to bless those who were heading out to spread the Gospel; they were being consecrated and given the support of the Church prior to embarking on their missions.

Does that help?

Peace in Christ

I am more interested in why exactly the laying on of the hands means something. In the case of the New Testament, it seems to actually literally transfer something, and I'm wondering why. I'm wondering if the Apostles' physical touch didn't literally convey something, like there was something going on with their actual bodies.
