What about the ZOO? They have a HUGE responsibility! If a 4 year old could get over and into the cage something is WRONF! The responsibility of the ZOO is to make sure children are safe! Clearly the ZOO FAILED to adequately provide proper and reasonable secure protection for small children climbing into this cage! The ZOO FAILED to protect the Gorilla from a child entering the cage! When constructing a cage EVERY where a there is an opportunity for intrusion must be elimated, before construction even begins. The ZOO FAILED!
If 1.2 million+ people PER YEAR have been through that zoo and there has not been an incident like this before, the idea that you can have such conviction in blaming the zoo, when that parent (who [presumably] knows what kind of child she has) did not have her eyes on her kid when she was within 60 yards of one of the most deadly animals on the planet, I have to ask:

When exactly IS a parent negligent?

For the record, if that gorilla has been at that zoo for 4 years, the zoo's enclosure failure rate is approximately %.000002.

Seriously...how can you focus on the zoo? Everyone LOVES to blame organizations, institutions, and other large entities for failures but we gotta buck up and realize that it is sometimes our own ineptitude, ignorance, failures, and prejudices that lead us to be in terrible situations.

I somehow have never felt much sympathy for alligators. They just look evil.
Saw a video the other day of a lion sneaking up on a gator, grabbing it behind the head and walking off with it.. I kinda felt bad for it.

I knew a three year old who got run over by his parents car when it was pulling out of the drive way. The kid walked, rather ran away afterwards. I'm sixty. I think a fifteen foot fall might have killed me.

That's actually an interesting point. I've read a few facebook moms who wrote that they'd have been diving after their kid and then beating on the gorilla. After I finished laughing at the absurdity of these women beating on this gorilla, it dawned on me that they probably wouldn't have made it to the gorilla after that fall. I'd love to believe that my maternal instinct and my adrenaline would kick in and I could snatch that child right away, but I'm aware that bodies have limits. And while this was a huge (what, 400lbs?) gorilla, they can move FAST too.

"I have worked with Gorillas as a zookeeper while in my twenties (before children) and they are my favorite animal (out of dozens) that I have ever worked closely with...

I have watched this video over again, and with the silverback's postering, and tight lips, it's pretty much the stuff of any keeper's nightmares....

I keep hearing that the Gorilla was trying to protect the boy. I do not find this to be true. Harambe reaches for the boys hands and arms, but only to position the child better for his own displaying purposes.
Males do very elaborate displays when highly agitated, slamming and dragging things about. Typically they would drag large branches, barrels and heavy weighted balls around to make as much noise as possible. Not in an effort to hurt anyone or anything (usually) but just to intimidate. It was clear to me that he was reacting to the screams coming from the gathering crowd.

Harambe was most likely not going to separate himself from that child without seriously hurting him first (again due to mere size and strength, not malicious intent) Why didn't they use treats? well, they attempted to call them off exhibit (which animals hate), the females in the group came in, but Harambe did not. What better treat for a captive animal than a real live kid!"

So you're okay with zoo's not fully barricading dangerous animals off from the public, and you prefer there be ways that little children can fall into exhibits where gorillas can get ahold of them when their parents aren't looking.
That's your imagination that abuses children.
Those are not nor have they ever been my words. Keep to what I say or stop speaking to me.

CINCINNATI, May 31 (Reuters) - Police may bring criminal charges over a Cincinnati Zoo incident in which a gorilla was killed to rescue a 4-year-old boy who had fallen into its enclosure, a prosecutor said on Tuesday.

The death of Harambe, a 450-pound (200-kg) gorilla, also prompted the animal rights group Stop Animal Exploitation Now to file a negligence complaint on Tuesday against the zoo with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The group is seeking the maximum penalty of $10,000.
Criminal charges possible in killing of Cincinnati gorilla

That would be ideal actually. Send a message to other zoo's. I wonder what Jack Hannah has to say about this. I also wonder why the man who raised Harambe from the time he was a baby gorilla wasn't called to the enclosure. He could have helped in this case I'm sure.

And absolutely the parent(s) should be charged with neglect. The death of this poor endangered animal and the injuries to the four year old boy are solely the responsibility of the parent(s). They shouldn't walk away from this without having to suffer the consequences of what happened to two innocent lives. And also those patrons who witnessed this whole thing transpire with their own children present.

Somebody/something has got to be a/the victim, it seems to be required nowadays...

Well there were perhaps many victims in this incident. But why is it so important to establish who was at fault?

In Memory of Harambe : Boy’s parents ask for donations following Cincinnati Zoo shooting

That's some serious unconsciousness right there. These people don't seem to realize what they did wrong! Zoo's are not babysitters!
I'm not seeing what she wrote was so bad. Maybe the donations she asking for. Can buy the zoo a new gorilla, help prevent this from happening again. At least was her child's fine. Life moves on. I'm not thinking her thoughts are on the zoo should have been watching my child. More like, Accidences happen when you have kids.

NO. The child wasn't missing for more than a few minutes, seconds even, before the mom was calling for him.

I ran off as a kid when we were at Kings Island. I was 7, maybe 8, I don't recall. Holy carp, the trouble I could've gotten into. The only difference between my parents and this mom is that my Houdini stunt didn't become a public spectacle. But it so easily could have. And my parents were practically helicopter parents.
I'll take your word on it. I think the gorilla stories got blown out of proportion.

I have no idea why someone or something has to be blamed you'd have to ask the "I live only to blame others" crowd why that is. Me I'm part of the "stuff happens" crowd that feels ok its over with now let's figure out how to prevent it from happening again we don't need a pound of someone's flesh...

Consider what happened to the child when this boy was missing for a few minutes near the enclosure of a dangerous animal.

If you're a parent ask yourself, would you let your child out of your sight in such a place? We sure never did. And our children never fell into a wild animal enclosure either.

A 3 year old is supper fast. I know if I look at a flower. They can disappear like that. The only difference if she might of looked at something. With 6 kids and her child ended up in the gorilla tank, instead of the slide at the park. So yes parents do these thing. Sadly a gorilla died. But I don't think she should go to jail and lose her kids over this. Also this is a chance for the zoo to up security or make it impossible for this to happen again. Just because it never happen to you. Really means it doesn't mean it couldn't have happen. Maybe you're just lucky.

It also sounds like they're trying to distract public attention from their neglect of their son. The zoo would need donations because the gorilla was killed to save the boy these parents left unattended.
No, It sound like someone, that feels some what guilty over the gorilla dying. Is trying to help the zoo get money to replace it. She could be getting a lawyers, because her kid shouldn't have been able to get into the gorilla tank. Period. I do blame both. But mistakes happen.

Jack Hannah FULLY SUPPORTS the zoo's decision. I have YET to hear from an ACTUAL gorilla expert who questions their response.
I've sure heard from a few "animal rights" organizations that questioned that response (initially).
