GA parents, offended by the 'Far East religion' of yoga, get 'Namaste' banned from school

"We need to direct our attention inward and connect to the breath," yoga instructor Rachel Brathen writes in her New York Times best-selling book about the practice. "Focusing on our breath keeps us present, calms the mind, and allows us to develop the awareness of the body we need to practice with care and compassion."

Since the ancient discipline with roots in Hinduism and Buddhism became a popular exercise in the West, yogis have inundated popular culture with their pursuit of that elusive "calm" in a rapidly spinning world.

Namaste is derived from Sanskrit and translates to the greeting, "I bow to you".
I don't imagine anyone can be prosecuted if they say, "Namaste " ,while in this particular school. I think the way to defeat the creeping weak minded fascist movement inspired to act in this country because words have been evolved so as to be believed to have power to corrupt and destroy, is to ignore the rules that say, you can't say that!

I could see the argument against the word "Namaste", and also the mandala, if these were not strictly taught as cultural features and not practiced with the exercises.

Honestly, I don't see the argument against "heart center", I don't see anything religious about that. If anyone has any more information that shows that it does, I would greatly appreciate it.

There is an ongoing discussion about cultural appropriation of yoga, but I won't get into that. The staff doesn't need to add spiritual aspects to yoga techniques for students to destress. If they learned about them in class as part of the culture of the world, that is one thing, but if staff are asking students to practice it that is another.

Back in the 1980s I went to a Yoga class while I was in college. The instructor felt it necessary to to begin the class with a lengthy monologue about how this wasn't some kind of foreign religion. How little things have changed over the years (in terms of American religious ignorance).

I have no doubt that the people making a fuss would have exactly the same issue with Christian prayer in school.

Isn't Georgia where they do stuff like have the football players pray on the field before games? I think that's fine if that's what they want but I mean that's religion in school too. I don't think the yoga was even religious tbh. Bc most of it now isn't at all. It's just for exercise. It helps with anxiety too.
