Genesis 2:7 tells us the formula for what a soul is...I thought soul meant soul.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Dust + oxygen = soul(life)
Soul - oxygen = dust(death)
Consider these references to understand the meaning of the word...
Proverbs 25:25
As cold water to a weary soul, So is good news from a far country.
Does a spirit get weary and desire cold water?
Genesis 27:19
Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.”
All blessings come from the Father through the Sprit, not through the supposed spirit of a person.
2 Kings 2:2
Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!” So they went down to Bethel.
This term, 'as your soul lives' is repeated throughout chapter 2... this would imply that our soul can die... where does that concept fit in with the modern day understanding of soul. I mean even the souls of the wicked never die according to most doctrines, so why is Elisha making a false statement and Elijah not correcting him?
It makes perfect sense with the right understanding that soul=living being.
Job 6:6-7
Can flavorless food be eaten without salt?
Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
My soul refuses to touch them;
They are as loathsome food to me.
Is our soul what touches things? That is physical yet the soul is supposed to be spirit...
Psalm 56:13
For You have delivered my soul from death. Have You not kept my feet from falling, That I may walk before God In the light of the living?
Here we see again the idea that the soul can die...
Romans 13:1
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
Soul = person
