I am afraid of taking the holy communion

Dear All

I have a some questions here that has being bugging me for awhile, and i hope to seek answers from brothers and sister of Christ here.

Q1) i am very new to Christianity, and my wife starts to bring me to the Lutheran church very week-end. The church refuse to let me and my kids take holy communion because we are not baptized, and it hurts when my kids says they wish to be like other kids to be able to the the communion. But personally, i am not ready to be Baptized because my faith is till not there. What should i do? Why cant the church allow my wife and my kids go thru the baptism without me?

Q2) If I went thru Baptism for the sake of my kids and wife. Is that right or wrong? I refuse to take the communion after baptism because one of the pastor told me that if i have no intention to repent from sinning, and if i take the communion, i am taking judgement upon myself. Is that true?

Have you spoken with the pastor about your specific questions? He will answer your questions, and most likely invite you to take a catechism class. Get yourself a Luther's Small Catechism with a questions and answers section and read it.

Thank you MNKeith, yes i have spoken to the Pastor. That is why it was better that i do not take communion until i have fully regain from not addictive sinning.

Baptism has been considered, since Roman times, to be a special "event" that's for believers and church members only. And scripture advises that one endangers himself by communing when unworthy, so the churches feel some responsibility in the matter.

While a lot of churches admit visitors to communion, that's almost always visitors who have been baptised in other Christian churches.

You could take the membership class with your kids. Then, it you find that you believe what you learn is true, you can get baptized and join that church. Your kids would be able to do the same.

My husband is a Pastor and he tells those who aren't sure, to learn about the Lutheran Church. Most times, the person joins the church after studying the catechism.

This is a bit confusing. It almost sounds like the Pastor has told you that you can't be baptized until you stop sinning?

Am I hearing this correctly? (I hope not!)

Perhaps you have put this restriction on yourself? If so, let me be perfectly clear with you:

As an ADULT convert to Christianity, repentance means that you ADMIT that you are a sinner, to AGREE that you deserve punishment, and to ACCEPT that you are not capable of saving yourself, but that Christ's death on the cross and Resurrection is SUFFICIENT to ATONE for your sins. If you are in agreement with all of that, you are eligible to be baptized.

YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO STOP SINNING BEFORE YOU CAN BE BAPTIZED.

I am not yelling at you, I put that in CAPS for emphasis. No one can STOP sinning. That's why we need Jesus.

Once you have professed faith and have been baptized, you are welcome to the Lord's Table.

Hope this helps.

Baptism and the Eucharist are very serious issues in the Lutheran Church, as they rightly should be. But I do implore you, do NOT do it until you are ready. This should be a beautiful thing, a promise between you and God, not something rushed to achieve a "check in the box."

With all due respect my friend, you have this completely the wrong way around. Just as those who were cut to the core at Peters preaching in Acts chapter 2, you obviously realise you have sinned in word, thought and deed against God, which has dire consequences. But when the Law has done it’s work in convicting the hearer of their sin, it is then appropriate th apply the life giving balm of the Gospel.

My friend, Jesus Christ was truly crucified, died and rose again for you. He suffered and died willingly that the burden and penalty of your sins would be borne upon His shoulders at Calvary, according to the Scriptures. And whilst that event took place 2000 years ago, in baptism you are united with Christ in His death, that you are also guaranteed to be united with Him in everlasting life also. In baptism you truly die with Christ, and just as He, will never die again. Even when you breathe your last, you will be with HIM for all eternity.

In baptism you receive the forgiveness of all your sins, past, present and future. In baptism you will receive the promised Holy Spirit, who will clothe you in the Righteousness of Christ, and help you to walk in that Righteousness because you are a child of God, not in order to earn that privilege.

It is understanding this is the will of God for you, and trusting in all that He has done and won for you in Christ, is the very thing that makes you worthy to eat His flesh and drink His blood in communion, which will further strengthen your faith, and remind you that truly your sins have been removed from you as far as the east is from the west.

Hear His Word and entrust your life and all that you hold dear to the truth of it:

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:38-41

I'm not sure the OP is around any longer....only two posts were made a couple of years ago. This is essentially a zombie thread :skull:. That said, it is a worthy conversation to have.

As far as why the church won't allow your wife and kids to go through baptism without you, that's a matter for that church and pastor to determine. I don't see that as the new testament model, because St Paul specifically discusses situations where a husband or wife becomes a Christian without their significant other converting saying that this is not an acceptable reason to end a marriage for the believer.

Q2) If I went thru Baptism for the sake of my kids and wife. Is that right or wrong? I refuse to take the communion after baptism because one of the pastor told me that if i have no intention to repent from sinning, and if i take the communion, i am taking judgement upon myself. Is that true?

I don't think you should simply go through baptism for the sake of someone else, though I recognize that you're willing to take such a step so that your children can participate fully in the sacraments of the church. It is true that those who partake of communion can do so and bring judgement on themselves:

"Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep."

FYI-This appears to be a zombie thread and the OP hasn't responded in quite awhile. Didn't want you to hold your breath anticipating an answer.

Good point, the OP has not been seen since February 2016 and only made two posts....I do not think we will get a reply, sadly. :(
