Terrorism By Any Other Name

When a Palestinian blows himself and surrounding civilians it gets everyone's attention and it should. When Israel uses its military to demolish houses and its Mossad to torture Arab detainees, well, HO-HUM. The reason that Israel is so expert at terrorism is their history: Israeli terrorists don't always go to jail, they become Prime Ministers.
One such Israeli hero helped kill more than 300 Arab civilians between 1937-39 by machine-gunning passing buses and bombing open air market places. One day they rolled an oil drum laden with explosives downhill into a bus stop in Haifa, killing 37 men, women and children.
This man became co-leader of the terrorist Stern Gang who had begun by killing some 300 British policemen and soldiers. There's more but let me save the best for last:
In April, 1948, he and his "patriots" carried out a horrific massacre of Deir Yassin, a neutral town of unfortunate non-combatants. However, THIS IS THE MOST GLARING EXAMPLE: He planned in July, 1948 to kill the UN peace mediator, Count Folke Bernadotte. Stern Gang gunmen with his express permission halted a convoy bearing Bernadotte at a Jerusalem roadblock wearing Israeli uniforms. As the mediators offered ID papers, an armed Israeli poked his Sten gun thru the car window firing a long burst killing the Count on the spot.
Shocking? Nahhh! The name of the terrorist-patriot-Stern Gang Leader: Yitzhak Shamir, later Prime Minister in the '80's. And now you know the rest of the story! Al

We need both wings to fly. ;)

I have not investegitated this story yet, but I wouldn't put it past them. I can tell you this, I fail to see the full justification for US contributions to Israel. I have seen a lot of double-standards, overwhelmingly in Israel's favor.

Part I: Introduction
The Israel Defense Forces was formed in battle. Many characteristics of the IDF which are evident today, originated in the fighting of 1948: the total mobilization of the society behind the war effort, the constant introduction of new weapons and techniques during the fighting, and the need of young commanders to establish their authority by successful leadership.

In human terms, the War of Independence was Israel's costliest war. More than 6,000 Israelis were killed and 15,000 wounded. It was one of the few instances when Israel faced almost equal forces on the other side: 35 to 45 thousand Israeli soldiers faced 42 to 54 thousand in the combined Arab armies. Although the Arab forces were marginally better equipped than the IDF, neither side employed tanks or planes in large numbers. The war was not characterized by a definite chronology or a marked beginning and end. Instead, it consisted of 39 separate operations, fought from the borders of Lebanon to the Sinai Peninsula and Eilat. Virtually the entire Jewish population of Palestine, then numbering 650,000 people, was mobilized in order to meet the coordinated assault of five regular Arab armies, in addition to Palestine's 1,000,000 Arabs.

Hi Cenimo! About the War of Independence: a lot of mythology has grown up around this conflict:
1.Your portrayal of Israel being born in the midst of war is right on as were the great number of Jewish fatalities. However...
2.The struggle was not exactly a Jewish David against an Arab Goliath: this notion is part of Israeli propaganda and is still being taught in Israel schools. Actually, in mid-May 1948 the total number of Arab troops operating in Palestine was under 25, 000, and the IDF some 35,000, gradually increased to a peak of 96,441. By the final stage of the war the superiority of the IDF was a ratio of nearly two to one.
3. The notion of Arab armies united to drive the Israelis into the sea is likewise a myth. The commander, King Abdullah, wrecked any unified plan by making last minute changes: his objective was not to destroy Isr. but to rule over the Arab part of Palestine. The other Arab states were out for their own interests, resulting in the military disaster that awaited them. Al

We're about the same age so this isn't exactly ancient history to us.
Of course whichever side's literature we read will be slanted but I figured many here, while willing to expound on a thread like this, are not even aware of the IDF.

The OP almost reminded me of some propoganda I once read describing Washington, Ethan Allen, George Rogers Clark etc...as terrorists...
While they ceertainly employed some guerilla tactics, to jump to "terrorists" is reacing a bit.

Just looking at a map of Israel and the surrounding countries is very convincing thgat something far greater than we know is on their side.
In 1967, I was with a group of folks that were headed to Israel should the US become involved. Israel had taken on, and defeated, several nations - and our Generals still hadn't decided on brown or green camouflage covers!

:)

JMHO, but I think there is a vast difference for doing what you have to do for survival as oppossed to running really heinous operations just for the shock factor. almost like the predtige thing with inmates, now if you're in for having kiled a cop, you have "status".

I don't think the Palmach or The Hagganah did it for shock factor, they did it because they were soldiers among soldiers, dedicated to a cause and their very survival.

One of the reasons American is so hated in the region is our support for Israeli terrorism while we condemn and attack Muslim terrorists. We support Israel to the tune of 6 Billion dollars a year, if we wanted the terrorists prosecuted I'm sure we have the political clout to get it done.

As to what the facts of the matter are ....

Thanks... I was hoping for more detail, but that's a good start. I guess I would need more information to be able to judge whether Sharon's alleged war-crimes were equivalent to terrorist acts or not... I'll try to get up to speed before GWII is engaged. (At least I hope it is just a GWII & not a WWIII!)

Greetings, All! As I said earlier, Israelis promote their terrorists to the highest posts, eg., Prime Minister. How about Ariel Sharon?
In 1953, Unit 101, a small commando unit led by Sharon was ordered to penetrate the Jordanian village of Qibya. His attack on this innocent village left only a pile of rubble: 45 homes were demolished, 69 civilians(2/3rds women and children) were killed. A UN inspection team revealed that the inhabitants had been forced by heavy fire to remain inside until their homes were destroyed by being blown up on top of them.
Sharon's handiwork in Southern Lebanon in 1982 was ghastly: first, he ordered saturation bombing of Beirut killing 300 people. Sharon later engineerd the use of Phalangist troops to enter the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila: a bloody, horrific massacre resulted. At least 800 civilians were slaughtered. Today's media and the Zionist's lobby often hang Palestinians with barbed words--however, Americans should read the lessons of Israeli history, where the formerly oppressed have become the oppressors. God bless, Al
