If we have faith and we do, then why does Rom 10:17 tell us that faith comes by hearing the word of God?

Rom 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. KJV

In the KJV the word “come” is in italic.

Actually the word is “cometh”

That means that the word is not in the original and was added by the translator’s in order to help translate what was being said.

Lets look at the verse without the word “cometh”.

So then faith by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The word “by” in “by hearing” is the key to understanding what verse 17 is telling us.

The first "by" is NT:1537
NT:1537
ek (ek) or ex (ex); a primary preposition denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause; literal or figurative; direct or remote):
KJV - after, among, are, at, betwixt (-yond), by (the means of), exceedingly, (+abundantly above), for (-th), from (among, forth, up), grudgingly, heartily, heavenly, hereby, very highly, in, ...ly, (because, by reason) of, off (from), on, out among (from, of), over, since, thenceforth, through, unto, vehemently, with (-out). Often used in composition, with the same general import; often of completion.
(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Hearing is the point whence faith, the action or motion proceeds

The second "by" NT:1223
NT:1223
dia (dee-ah'); a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):
KJV - after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause). ..fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, though, through (-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). In composition it retains the same general import.
(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
Faith is the action or motion proceeding from hearing, and hearing the word of God, the channel of the act.
Copyright © 2000 Me. All rights reserved.

Both definitions have to with “act”, “action”.

When we hear the word of God the faith that God “dealt” to us is “put in motion.”

That “motion” causes us to believe that the word of God we heard is true.

Then if allowed by us that “motion” will then cause us to act on what we heard.

Many have heard the word.

Hearing the word caused faith to “move” in them.

When faith “moves” in us, it causes a spark of hope.

Hope, that what the word says will happen in/for us.

If doubt and/or unbelief then enters in, and it will certainly attempt to.

If doubt and/or unbelief then enters in and is received, that stops the “motion”.

Doubt and/or unbelief puts the brakes on the motion of faith and stops it.

When the motion of faith is stopped there are no results.

The hope that was had momentarily fades away and we are left without hope.

The hope that what the word told us we could have or be fades.

Then we are discouraged.

Then we are disappointed.

Doubt and/or unbelief was allowed to stop our faith.

No results!

What are some of the things that can cause doubt and/or unbelief to stop faith?

There are many.

I will list a few.

1. Being taught and believing that it may not be God’s will for you.
2. Being taught and believing that God may be teaching you something by with holding His Promise from you.
3. Fear
4. Hardness of heart.
5. Being weak and giving up.
6. People telling you negative things.
7. Emotions, feelings and reasonings that rise up and sway you against the knowledge of God.

How are these things overcome?

By staying with the Word of God and deciding simply that God does not lie.

Understand that you are not “the exception” so that God’s Word just will not work for you.

That is a lie of the devil.

The Word of God works for those that believe it, stays with it, until the word is in their “heart” (innermost being).

That may take some time.

That may require and probably will take some reading, study, thinking about.

That will require some perseverance.

How can you tell when the word has gotten into your innermost being?

Jesus said that what is in our heart we will speak.

Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. KJV

We persevere and continue with the word until it is in our heart abundantly.
Then it will come out of our mouth.

What we really believe we speak.

People speak what they really believe is true.

It can be evil as far as God is concerned.

It can be good as far as God is concerned.

What does God consider evil?

What does God consider good?

Evil is whatever is said contrary to what the word of God says.

Good is whatever is said in agreement to what the word of God says.

We will continue next time.

What we really believe we talk about or speak.

People talk about/speak what they really believe is true.

It can be evil as far as God is concerned.

It can be good as far as God is concerned.

What does God consider evil?

What does God consider good?

Evil is whatever is said contrary to what the word of God says.

Good is whatever is said in agreement to what the word of God says.

Lets look at Hebrews 11:6 again.

Heb 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. KJV

We have seen that it is impossible to please God without faith.

We have seen that each have been “dealt” the measure of faith.

Therefore everybody has the same amount of faith.

We have seen that hearing the word of God activates our faith.

We have seen that we can put the brakes on our faith by doubt and/or unbelief.

We keep our faith activated by continuing hearing God’s word.

If we are hearing what the world says which is opposite of God’s word.

Our faith turns to fear and we are without hope.

When faith turns to fear the mouth speaks fear.

Fear is spoken by saying negative things about yourself, others, your situation, others situation.

The scripture says that we have not been given a spirit of fear.

2 Tim 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. KJV

We have been given the spirit of power, love and a sound mind.

A sound mind, not a squirrelly mind.

Hebrews 11:6 does not stop with telling us that we must have faith to please God.

Heb 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. KJV

We must also believe that God is a rewarder.

The word translated “rewarder” is NT:3406 and means “one who pays wages”.

NT:3406 misthapodotees, misthapodoteesou, ho

(misthos and apodidoomi;

compare the misthodotees of the Greek writings) (Vulgate: remunerator);

one who pays wages, a rewarder Heb 11:6.
(from Thayer's Greek Lexicon, Electronic Database. Copyright © 2000, 2003 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

Faith pays wages.

Notice also that one must be diligent.

The word translated “diligently seek” is NT:1567 and signifies “to seek out” or after, to search for.

3. ekzeteo NT:1567 signifies (a) "to seek out (ek) or after, to search for"; e. g., God Rom 3:11; the Lord, Acts 15:17; in Heb 11:6, RV, "seek after" (KJV, "diligently seek"); 12:17, RV, "sought diligently" (KJV, "sought carefully"); 1 Peter 1:10, RV, "sought" (KJV, "have inquired"), followed by exeraunao, "to search diligently",
(from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words, Copyright © 1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers.)

We must search for, seek out, seek after God.

How do we search for, seek out, seek after God?

We search for, seek out, seek after God by consistently, reading and studying and DOING God’s Word.

God gave us His Word by which He teaches us about Him.

God gave us His Word by which He teaches us about His Ways.

Ps 138:2
I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. KJV

Ps 138:2
I bow before your holy Temple as I worship. I will give thanks to your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness, because your promises are backed by all the honor of your name. NLT

Ps 138:2
I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. NIV

Ps 138:2
I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. NRSV

God’s Word is backed by all the honor of His name.

Remember what the word says about the Name of Jesus?

Phil 2:9-10
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; KJV

There is no name higher.

Where ever it is even in heaven.

The name of Jesus is higher.

The Word of God is backed by the Name of Jesus.

We will continue next time.

Scripture says that without faith it is impossible to please God.

Lets look at Hebrew 11:6 again.

Heb 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. KJV

God is the most purposeful being we will ever meet.

Everything He does has purpose.

Everything He says has purpose.

Even the order He says things have purpose.

Lets look at the scripture before verse 6.

Heb 11:5
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. KJV

Verse 5 tells us several things.

Enoch did not die.

Enoch did not die because God translated Him.

After Enoch was translated those on the earth could not find him because Enoch had been translated.

Wait a minute now!

The scriptures tell us that it is appointed unto man once to die.

Heb 9:27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: KJV

Why didn’t Enoch die like everybody else does?

Remember, God has purpose in everything that He does.

I am going to use the example of Abraham and Isaac.

However, we are not going into a lot of detail with it, unless someone ask for more.

God told Abraham to take his only son up on a mountain and sacrifice him
Why did God tell Abraham that?

Is God just mean?

Remember!

Everything God does has purpose.

Abraham was obedient and set forth to do what he was commanded.

Just as Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, he was stopped.

Scriptures tell us that Abraham assumed that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again.

In a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.

So, why did God command Abraham to sacrifice Isaac?

Because a man on earth was willing to sacrifice his only begotten son in obedience to God.

God could send His only begotten Son as a sacrifice for man.

What is God’s purpose in translating Enoch?

There was one more man that did not die because God took him.

Remember who that was?

Elijah.

2 Kings 2:11
And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. KJV

What was God’s purpose in taking Elijah by a “whirlwind?”

What is God’s purpose in allowing Enoch and Elijah to seemingly bypass death.

Revelation.

The two witnesses.

Enoch and Elijah will experience physical death as recorded in the Book of Revelation.

As scripture says that it is appointed unto man once to die, so it will be for Enoch and Elijah.

Enoch and Elijah will die according to God’s Purpose.

Enoch was translated.

Heb 11:5
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. KJV

We saw God’s purpose for translating Enoch.

Why did God translate Enoch?

God allowed Enoch to take part in the Plan of God at the time of the change of ages.

What was it about Enoch that God decided to translate him.
Did Enoch do something that God liked?

Scripture tells us that Enoch walked with God!

Gen 5:22
And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: KJV

Enoch walked with God!

The YLT says;

Gen 5:22
And Enoch walketh habitually with God after his begetting Methuselah three hundred years, and begetteth sons and daughters.
YLT

The TEV says;

Gen 5:22
After that, Enoch lived in fellowship with God for 300 years and had other children. TEV

The NLT says;

Gen 5:22
After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived another 300 years in close fellowship with God, and he had other sons and daughters.
NLT

How did Enoch do that?

We will continue next time.

The NLT says;

Gen 5:22
After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived another 300 years in close fellowship with God, and he had other sons and daughters.
NLT

How did Enoch do that?

Enoch did what none of the others was doing.

How was Enoch able to do something that no one else at the time was doing?

Was Enoch special in some way?

Did God give Enoch ability that none others had?

Lets look at this verse again.

Verse 5 says that “by faith Enoch was translated.”

Heb 11:5
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. KJV

Verse 5 also says that before Enoch was translated he had a testimony that he pleased God.

How did Enoch please God?

Remember Hebrews 11:6?

That is the verse that tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God.

Heb 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. KJV

From these verses we can see that;

1. Enoch pleased God.
2. Without faith it is impossible to please God.
3. Therefore Enoch pleased God by faith.

So, where did Enoch get the faith by which he pleased God?

Remember Romans 12:3 told us that God deals to every man the measure of faith.

Even to those who lived before Jesus was raised!

God must have dealt to OT people the measure of faith as well as to us.

The whole of Chapter Eleven in the Book of Hebrews is about faith and those that did great things by faith.

All of those that are in chapter eleven are OT.

Why are there so few listed compared to the number of people who lived in the time period that Hebrews eleven covers?

Every one of them had the same measure of faith, yet only a few in comparison lived by faith.

Faith perverted is fear.

The devil did not “create” fear.

The devil is a fallen angel and has no creative power.

The devil takes what God has created and perverts it for his own use.

Perverted faith is fear.

Perverted love is hate.

Most do not live by faith, even most Christians.

Most live by fear dictated by what is seen, heard and felt.

That is why scripture tells us not to walk by sight, but to walk by faith.

So, how did Enoch come to walk or live by faith instead of fear?

Lets look closer at what we know about Enoch and those he lived with.

Remember we have also seen that faith “comes” by hearing.

So does fear.

What comes, either faith of fear depends on what we are hearing.

That is why Jesus told us to take heed what we hear.

Who did Enoch hear about life issues from?

One that he was able to learn from was Adam.

Adam was the only man that had walked with God!

Adam and Eve had walked with God in the cool of the evening.

Perhaps in their talks and conversation Adam talked about what it was like to have walked with God.

Enoch hearing that caused faith to activate inside him.

The difference being with Enoch from the others except Noah.

The difference being that Enoch though about what Adam said.

Enoch wanted to experience walking with God!

Enoch thought about it and thought about walking with God.

Maybe he started out just talking to God as if God was there.

Maybe he started out talking to God believing that God heard him.

Talking to God that he could not see.

Talking to God that he was not hearing.

Talking to God that he could not feel.

Talking to God anyway.

Believing that God heard him.

That is faith!

We will continue next time.

Enoch thought about it and thought about walking with God.

Maybe he started out just talking to God as if God was there.

Maybe he started out talking to God believing that God heard him.

Talking to God that he could not see.

Talking to God that he was not hearing.

Talking to God that he could not feel.

Believing that God heard him.

The same principles of faith apply to Enoch that apply to us.

Lets review those principles.

We know that we can boldly go into God’s Presence and obtain mercy and grace that helps.

Our evidence is;

Heb 4:16-5:1
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
KJV

We know we have faith.

Our evidence is;

Rom 12:3.
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. KJV

We know that receiving what we hear determines what we believe.

Receiving what we hear from the world activates fear.

Receiving what we hear from the word of God activates faith.

Our evidence is;

Rom 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. KJV

We know we have faith that speaks when what we heard and received from the word of God is in us abundantly.

Our evidence is;

Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. KJV

We know that when we speak from the abundance of our heart(innermost being) that we have the same spirit of faith that Paul, Peter, John as well as Jesus.

Our evidence is;

2 Cor 4:13
We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; KJV

We know that when we speak God’s Word from the abundance of our innermost being that we plant the word of God.
Our evidence is;

Mark 4:14
The sower soweth the word. KJV

We know that when we speak God’s Word from the abundance of our innermost being that we plant the seed of the Word of God.

Our evidence is;

Luke 8:7
Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. KJV

We know that Good Ground People, when we believe in our innermost being and speak that we will bring forth fruit or results.

Our evidence is;

Luke 8:15
But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. KJV

We know that when we believe in our innermost being and speak that we will have what we speak/say.

Our evidence is;

Mark 11:23
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
KJV

We know that when we pray with a forgiving heart that we believe that we receive when we pray and have what we request.

Our evidence is;

Mark 11:24
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
KJV

We have confidence that what we ask for He hears us when we ask.

Our evidence is;

1 John 5:14
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us KJV

We know that what we ask is according to His will because our faith and confidence is from hearing His word.

Again our evidence is;

Rom 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. KJV

We know that He hears us therefore what know that we have what we ask Him for.

Our evidence is;

1 John 5:15
And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. KJV

We know that these mysteries of the Kingdom of God are ours.

Our evidence is;

Matt 13:11
He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. KJV

Wonder where this will go next?

We will continue next time.

What a grace that God has granted us in giving to us the family secrets.

By these secrets(mysteries) we can understand and operate in God's Kingdom.

That gives a huge advantage in life to the Christian(born again person) that will determine to learn about, understand and do them.

The worlds people are always looking for that "edge" that would give them an advantage over everyone else.

God has given His Family Members what the world does not have!

Mysteries or secrets that are spiritual laws and bring into manifestation all those spiritual blessings that we have been blessed with.

The mysteries/secrets or the kingdom of heaven is your as a born again person.

Matt 13:11
Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. KJV

Note:
Might find this interesting.

Kingdom of God is used 69 times in NT,
Kingdom of Heaven 32 times in NT. That is a total of 101 times in the NT.

54 of the 69 times the Kingdom of God is mentioned in the NT are in the Gospels.
All KoH references in Gospels are all in Matthew. Matthew has 28 chapters, the phrase was used in 15 chapters the most being the 13th (8 times). KOG mentioned 5 times in 4 chapters of Matthew.
A total of 86 times in the Gospels that KOG/KOH are mentioned.

Mysteries 5 times in NT. Mystery 22 times, 4 of which are in Revelation, 6 in Eph.

The seed that the sower sowed that fell by the way side was immediately taken.

The AMP says:

Matt 13:19
While anyone is hearing the Word of the kingdom and does not grasp and comprehend it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the roadside. AMP

Notice that the seed that fell by the wayside, the seed that fell into stoney places, the seed that was received among thorns, as well as the seed that was received in good ground ALL HEARD the word.

However all did not receive the seed the same way. This parable is about different people.

That means you and I are "in" this parable.

We all want to be "good ground" and produce good harvest from the seed of the word of God that is planted in our "hearts"

Notice also that the seed of the word of God is planted in our "hearts".

That seed of the word is planted (sown) when we hear the word.

Luke says this about stony ground.

Luke 8:13
They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. KJV

This person receives the word. That means they do not dismiss the word as not true.

The word translated "receive" is NT:1209

c. with the accusative of the thing offered in speaking, teaching, instructing;

to receive favorably, give ear to, embrace, make one's own, approve, not to reject:
ton logon, Luke 8:13; Acts 8:14; 11:1; 17:11; 1 Thess 1:6; 2:13; James 1:21;
(from Thayer's Greek Lexicon, Electronic Database. Copyright © 2000, 2003 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

They receive favorably, give ear to, embrace, make one's own, approve, not to reject.

The heard the word, approved of it, therefore not rejecting, or dismissing it.

They also receive the word with joy. They were excited about what they heard and received.

Some time passed and in a time of temptation they fell away.

They believed for awhile.

They fell away Luke tells us because there is no root.

Matthew will tell us more.

Matt 13:20-21
20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. KJV

Matthew says they have no root in “himself”, so only endures for a while.

Luke said in a time of temptation falls away. Matthew tells us what the temptation was.

Tribulation or persecution was the temptation they encountered.

Notice that the temptation which was tribulation or persecution was encountered because of the word.

Because they had no root in themselves they became offended.

They allowed the word to be an offense to them!

Mark tells us this.

Mark 4:16-17
16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;

17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. KJV

Mark uses the word “affliction”.

Affliction, persecution, tribulation, all those referred to as temptation.

All of that came because of the word and they allowed themselves to become offended.

What did “offense” do?

Caused them to cave in, quit, give up?

We must not be stony ground!

We must not allow ourselves to become offended because of the word of God

Luke tells us that stony ground people fall away.

Luke 8:13

Mark says that they only endure for a time because they allow themselves to be offended.

Stony ground people become offended because of the word.

Mark 4:16-17

16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;

17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. KJV

Matthew tells us stony ground people receive the word with joy!

They are excited about the word when they hear and receive it.

The pressures of life when one starts living for God shows up in the form of persecution, tribulation and afflictions.

Those troubles can come not just from the devil and his bunch but will be manifested through friends, family, co workers and sometimes people we do not even know.

A stony ground person, not being established in what the believe will care more about what people think about them than what God thinks about them, become offended because of the trouble the word brought to them and fall away from what they heard.

Matt 13:20-21

20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. KJV

Luke tells us that thorn people hear, go forth with their life. They are consumed with thoughts and concerns about cares, riches and pleasure of this life. The result being that they bring no fruit to perfection.

Notice: Luke said that they do not bring fruit to perfection. Luke did not say that they have no fruit.

Thorn people bring forth fruit.

Thorn people get sidetracked and do not bring the fruit they have to “perfection”.

Luke 8:14
And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. KJV

The word translated “perfection” is NT:5052

23.203 NT:5052
to produce completely mature fruit - 'to produce ripe fruit, to bear mature fruit.'
'they are choked and their fruit never matures' or '... never ripens' Luke 8:14.
(from Greek-English Lexicon Based on Semantic Domain. Copyright © 1988 United Bible Societies, New York. Used by permission.)

Thorn people produce fruit but do not stay with it until their fruit is completely mature. Thorn people are “choked” and their fruit never matures or never ripens.

Matthew gives us more details about what the cares, riches and pleasure of this life are.

Matt 13:21
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. KJV

Matthew says the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches are the problem that Thorn people encounter.

Mark says the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word.

Mark included “the lust of other things entering in”.

Mark 4:18-19
18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,

19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. KJV

Reading and learning about stony people and thorn people gives us light on what John was telling us.

1 John 2:15-16
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. KJV

John summed up “the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in” as well as “persecution, tribulation and afflictions that arise for the word’s sake”.

We are all “stony ground people” and “thorn people” at times.

When we hear the word regarding different subjects we may react to one subject as good ground people, but another as stony ground people of thorn people.

Good ground people is coming up. That is what we all want to be.

We ask The Holy Spirit to help us monitor our thinking so that we can recognize a stony or thorn reaction to the word.

When we recognize “stony” and/or “thorns” we with the help of the Holy Spirit can become “good ground”.

Good Ground

We have spent a little time on “Wayside People”, Stony Ground People and Thorn People.

Those terms are used to describe a “heart” condition toward a subject from the word of God.

Our venue here limit the detail we can study about this parable, but we have given detail so that anyone who desires can take what we have discussed, spend time rereading, thinking about, etc. and the Holy Spirit will continue to teach them.

It is the Holy Spirit that gives us the understanding of the word.

Mark tells us this about good ground.

Mark 4:20
And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred. KJV

Good Ground People hear the word. They do not stop with just the hearing of the word they received it.

The word translated “receive” is NT:3858.

to admit, i. e., not to reject, to accept, to receive:
ton logon, Mark 4:20;
(from Thayer's Greek Lexicon, Electronic Database. Copyright © 2000, 2003 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

Strongs Concordance says

NT:3858
paradechomai (par-ad-ekh'-om-ahee); from NT:3844 and NT:1209; to accept near, i.e. admit or (by implication) delight in:

KJV - receive.
(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Good Ground People hear the word and “admit” it. That means they admit it is true. They do not reject the word they hear. They accept , receive the word of God they hear. The word “receive” implies that Good Ground People delight in the word they hear.

Can you see the attitude of Good Ground People?

Remember we read where Jesus said to take heed what we hear because how we measure it will be measured back to us?

When they hear God’s Word they do not stagger at it. They admit it is true. They do not reject it. They measure the Word of God they hear as true.

Here is the way we tell with what measure of truth each measures it.

They bring forth fruit (results), some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.

Listen, even thirtyfold is good.

The results a Good Ground Person produces is also determined by their understanding of “how to receive”.
“Receive”.

That is what Good Ground People do right! Mark said, quoting Jesus, that Good Ground People “receive” the word of God they hear, they do not reject it, they admit the word is true, they accept the word they hear and delight in the word of God they hear.

Understanding “how to receive” is the same as understanding how faith works.

The understanding Good Ground People have of how faith works which is understanding how to receive is a huge factor in the results that The Word of God produces in each Good Ground Person.

Matthew tells us that Good Ground People hear the word and understands it.

Matt 13:22
But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. KJV

Remember, the Wayside People did not understand the word which allowed the devil to immediately take the word from their heart.

Understanding of the word does not always come with the first hearing! That is why we are told to study to show ourselves approved.

2 Tim 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. KJV

A workman that studies and rightly divides the word of truth, which is the word of God is approved of God and is not ashamed of what he works at.

In Luke we learn that Good Ground People have an honest and good heart.

Luke 8:15
But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. KJV

The TEV says that Good Ground People have a good and obedient heart.

Luke 8:15
The seeds that fell in good soil stand for those who hear the message and retain it in a good and obedient heart, and they persist until they bear fruit. TEV

An obedient heart is good and obeys what they learn from the word of God.

They are doers of the word and not hearers only.

The subject of being a doer of the word also takes a book to adequately teach as does this parable.

Lets consider these scriptures then we will move on with our parable.

Remember the houses that were built?

Matt 7:24-27

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand :

27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. KJV

The difference is success in life is dependent on hearing the word and doing it vs. hearing the word and not doing it.

Want success in life?

Here is another “hint”.

Josh 1:8
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. KJV

James tell us that a doer of the word shall be blessed in his deed.

James 1:22-25

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
KJV

Good Ground People are doers of the word and are blessed in their deeds.

Starting the seed

Remember!

Be a doer of the word.

Lets take a look at some of our seed for healing.

Isa 53:4
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. KJV

We saw that the word translated “griefs” was sickness and disease.

When we hear the word it starts a process within us.

When we hear “Surely he hath borne our sickness and disease (griefs)” that starts an immediate process in us that will determine at some point the kind of “ground” we will be for the subject of our healing from God, by the word of God.

We learned that “Wayside People” when they hear the word do not receive it, do not understand it.

Because they do not understand it the devil is able to come in and steal that word immediately.

The result being that in the case of receiving healing from God, do not, because of doubt and unbelief in what they heard.

The scripture is reasoned away so that it does not hold the truth of healing for us, but really means something different than what the scripture said.

“Stony Ground People”, “Thorn People” as well as “Good Ground People” are also faced with this decision, but make the right decision in order to continue with the process.

“Wayside People” by measuring the word given in Isa. 53:4 as not true, stop the process of the seed.

Mark 4:24
And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. KJV

The seed of healing that is Isa.53:4 was devoured by the fowls (devil).

Matt 13:4
And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: KJV

The seed could not “germinate”, it was devoured.

Always be on God’s side. Always side with Him. What His word says is the reality. There may be some facts in our lives that are not what God says we can have.

The reality of the seed of the word of God will grow and change the facts in our lives to the reality of what the Word says.

It can be a fact that a person be sick.

The Word of God has the power in it when believed and acted on to change that fact of sickness into the reality of health.
The power is released by the planting of the seed of the Word of God.

More on the Sower

We have all been born again.

We heard the word, received it, when tribulation, persecutions and afflictions came we were rooted and stayed.

Then the opportunities came to be distracted with cares and riches and pleasures of this life but we stayed steady.

We were “Good Ground People” for the word of salvation and produce at least some fruit, some more, some less.

Just because we are born again though and we had victory and overcame the first “attack” of tribulation, persecution, affliction, cares and riches and pleasures of this life does not end it.

Those “attacks” will persist throughout our lives here on the planet as the devil goes about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may destroy.

1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion , walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: KJV

The devil wants to cause complete and sudden destruction of someone – to destroy them completely.

That someone is you.

The word translated “he may devour” is NT:2666

b: (a figurative extension of meaning of
a 'to swallow,' 23.45) to cause the complete and sudden destruction of someone or something - 'to destroy, to ruin completely.'
'your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to destroy' 1 Peter 5:8.
(from Greek-English Lexicon Based on Semantic Domain. Copyright © 1988 United Bible Societies, New York. Used by permission.)

The word translated “seeking” is NT:2212

b. to seek (i. e. in order to find out) by thinking, meditating, reasoning; to inquire into:
peri tinos zeeteite met' alleeloon; John 16:19;
followed by indirect discourse, poos, ti, tina: Mark 11:18; 14:1,11; Luke 12:29; 22:2; 1 Peter 5:8;
(from Thayer's Greek Lexicon, Electronic Database. Copyright © 2000, 2003 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

The devil “is inquiring into” if he is able to cause the complete and sudden destruction of someone or something – to destroy completely.

He does not have the power to wipe anyone out, unless that person allows him to.

Stay steady in your walk with the Lord. Having proved to be “Good Ground People” and received the new birth, stay steady. Continue with the word and do not be distracted.

Once we are born again, at some point in our walk with the Lord we will hear the word of God concerning healing.

Depending on many factors, which can be different for each person, each person will chose to be when they hear the word of healing, either “Wayside People”, “Stony Ground People”, “Thorn People” or “Good Ground People”!
Take time to study much and not harden your heart to the word of healing.

Be “Good Ground People” and be healed in the Name of Jesus!

Stony Ground People and the Word of Healing

We have a group of people that consist of Wayside. Stony, Thorn and Good Ground.

The group hears the word of God concerning healing.

The Lords benefits are healing, not sickness and disease.

Ps 103:1-3
103:1 A Psalm of David. Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; KJV

We learned the word “griefs” is sickness and disease.

Isa 53:4
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. KJV

Isaiah was looking forward to what Jesus would do.
Jesus came and did what Isa. 53 describes.
Peter in this verse is looking back at what Jesus did about physical healing which is made healing available to any born again person that will learn to received it.

1 Peter 2:24
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. KJV

The above seed is heard by our Group of people.

What happens with the Wayside People?

The seed of The Word of God is heard but not “heard”. They measure the word of healing as not true, therefore they do not gain understanding of it .

Because they do not understand, the devil is able to come in and steal the word.

Wayside people do not receive healing from the word.

What happens with the Stony Ground People?

Stony Ground People hear the word.

They receive the word of healing with joy!

Mark tells us they receive the word with gladness.

Those that are sick are glad, full of joy that they have heard the word of healing because they realize they can receive healing.

Matthew tells us that Stony Ground People welcome the word of healing, and accepts it with joy, yet……..verse 21.

Matt 13:20-21
20 As for what was sown on thin (rocky) soil, this is he who hears the Word and at once welcomes and accepts it with joy;

21 Yet it has no real root in him, but is temporary (inconstant, lasts but a little while); and when affliction or trouble or persecution comes on account of the Word, at once he is caused to stumble [he is repelled and begins to distrust and desert Him Whom he ought to trust and obey] and he falls away. AMP

The Amplified really brings out the process a Stony Ground Person goes thru that causes them to stumble at the word. They are repelled and distrust and even desert God’s Healing Word instead of trusting and obeying.

Result?

Stony Ground People fall away and lose any healing they had received.

Mark tells us they do fine at first, but wilt because their roots are not very deep and they wilt.

The NLT says;

Mark 4:16-17
16 The rocky soil represents those who hear the message and receive it with joy.

17 But like young plants in such soil, their roots don't go very deep. At first they get along fine, but they wilt as soon as they have problems or are persecuted because they believe the word. NLT

Luke tells us that Stony Ground People hear and receive the seed of the Word of God about healing and receive it gladly. The word of healing does not sink deep into them, therefore only believe for a while and fall away when tested.

That testing is not by God but by the tribulation, persecution and afflictions that the devil brings.
Luke 8:13
13 The seeds that fell on rocky ground stand for those who hear the message and receive it gladly. But it does not sink deep into them; they believe only for a while but when the time of testing comes, they fall away. TEV

Stony Ground People hear the word of healing and even experience different degrees of recovery .

In the KJV, Matthew says that they “dureth” for a while. Mark says they endure for a time. Luke says for a time.

Final Result?

Stony Ground People fall away and lose any healing they had received from the healing seed of the word of God.

More Thorns

Lets review a little to refresh our memory.

We have a group of people that consist of Wayside. Stony, Thorn and Good Ground.

The group hears the word of God concerning healing.

Our healing seed are these scriptures.

God is the God that heals us. He does not make us sick .

We learned that the Wayside People did not receive and accept the word, therefore did not understand the word. That allowed the devil to take the word from their heart.

Stony Ground People fell away and lost any healing they had received from the healing seed of the word of God including a degree of healing that might have been immediate.

What happens with Thorn People?

Matthew tells us that the Thorn People hear the word but they become unfruitful.

If they become unfruitful, that would mean they were fruitful to some degree for a period of time.

Remember that Stony Ground People endured for a time. Stony Ground People did not endure long enough to become fruitful.. No fruit for the “Stonies”.

Thorn People stayed with the word of healing produced some fruit and then became unfruitful

Matt 13:22
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. KJV

What caused Thorn People to become unfruitful?

The care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches.

Thorn People started thinking about cares of this world and deceitfulness of riches.

They stopped thinking about the healing scriptures.

This allowed the seed of healing to be choked out and they became unfruitful.

Luke tells us that as Thorn People “go on their way” they are choked and suffocated with anxieties and cares.

Luke 8:14
And as for what fell among the thorns, these are [the people] who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked and suffocated with the anxieties and cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not ripen (come to maturity and perfection). AMP

Life brings many opportunities to be anxious about things.

Life brings many opportunities for our “cares” to overwhelm us.

How can we as born again people deal with anxieties and cares?

The Word of God tells us what to do with them.

1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. KJV

Do ya really trust God with all your heart?

When we obey Him and do what He says. Then He will do what He says He will do.

When one has cares and/or anxieties they are worrying.

Worry has never impacted any situation for the good ever.

The impact worry has is upon the one that is engrossed in worries and cares and anxieties.

Worry causes headaches, stomach problems, nerve problems, robs sleep, take ones peace.

Worry also makes us grouchy and hard to get along with.

God is God and knows what is the best way for us to deal with any issue of life including worries.

Worrying about things is to the world a sign of caring about something. Because, they say, we worry about it, that shows we are really concerned and care deeply about it.

Many, if they are not worrying about their problems, feel guilty because they are not “doing something” about it.

This is the way the world’s people think.

We are in the world but are not a part of it. God has given us better ways to deal with things.

We trust God knowing that He cares for us and when we have cares and worries we cast those cares over on Him.

When we do that we do not “pick them up” again. We leave our cares, worries, anxieties with Him, knowing that because He cares(loves) us He will work on it to resolve the problem(s) that are causing us cares.

The Amplified says:

1 Peter 5:7
Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully. [Ps 55:22.] AMP

This is getting too long so we will continue from here.

Have to give ya one more thing to consider!

Have you realized we are talking about a different seed?

A seed of the Word of God that will free us from worry!

Understanding the seed process

There are many that hear the word of God, which is seed regarding different Bible subjects.

When they hear the word for one reason or another, either immediately, or over a period of time, move away from the word, or become offended by the word and do receive.

They do not receive because the word, which is a seed, did not have time to take root, and then grow and eventually produce results(fruit).

Just like a corn seed or wheat seed that is planted, one does not plant a corn seed or wheat seed and reap a harvest the same day.

We do not reap a harvest in a few days. It takes time for a seed to root, and then grow so that the plant can be seen coming up out of the ground.

The seed of the word of God is the same.

Many have heard the word seed of healing and gave up.

Many have heard the word seed of healing and not received because they did not understand that the word is seed.

Because they did not understand that the word was seed they did not understand that the word seed required time to grow before the healing the seed will produce had time to grow to the yielding of results.

Jesus spoke of us about that.

With our understanding now of the illustration(parable) of the sower, which Jesus said that if we do not understand the parable of the sower we would not understand all parables.

With the understanding of the illustration of the sower, lets look at this parable(illustration) again.

Mark 4:26-29

26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;

27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.

28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.

29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come. KJV

We are speaking of healing seed, therefore lets relate the parable to the healing seed of the word of God.

26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;

At some point in our lives we hear the scriptures about healing.

The healing seed of the word of God was sown in our hearts.

After we hear the word perhaps from a sermon at church, a church service on the television, a book about healing, or from personal reading and study, the seed is sown in our hearts.

We do not go out the door of the church, or turn the tv off after the program is over, or put down the book, or read about it and then forget about it. Those that do that are not serious about receiving healing.

We do not forget about it but we think about it. We think about what we heard.

When we are doing the dishes, cutting the grass, vacuuming the floor, cleaning the garage, fishing, etc.

When we are doing a task that does not require our total attention on the task we consider what we heard, we meditate on what we heard.

We also open up our Bible and go over the scriptures again and again. We may look up word meanings, we may read more healing scriptures(seed) and think about, meditate on them as well.

27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.

As we continue our thinking about, meditating on, reading the healing seed scriptures over and over, day after day, night after night.

We continue that process of study, thinking about, meditating on, talking about healing seed.

As we do that the seed of the healing word of God takes root in our hearts.

As we continue to study, think about, meditate on, talk about the healing seed the word of God completes the rooting process and begins to grow up instead of down.

Perhaps we start noticing a change in our physical condition.

Remember that many that Jesus ministered to were healed “as they went”.

Luke 17:14
And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went , they were cleansed. KJV

Matt 9:22
But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. KJV

Her healing beginning at the time she touched the hem of His garment and continued until she was made whole. Completely healed of the issue and its effects.

28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.

The seed of the word of God is not planted in the earth.

The seed of the word of God is planted in our hearts.

Just as God designed the earth to grow seed, so He designed our “hearts” to grow the seed of His Word!

The heart will grow the seed of the word and grow to the yielding of results(fruit).

When we stay with the seed of corn planted in the ground, we water the corn seed.

We remove weeds so the corn is not choked out.

Eventually, the ground does what it is designed to do, and the corn seed grows, until the plant can be seen, continues to grow until it yields results, which is corn.

When we stay with the seed of healing planted in our heart, we water the healing seed with study, thinking about the healing scriptures, by meditating on the healing seed scriptures, by talking about the healing seed scriptures.

We remove weeds so the word is not choked out. The weeds and thorns are doubt, unbelief, negative things heard, like the word is not seed, God does not heal everybody, It is not God’s will to heal everyone, etc.

Eventually, the “heart” does what it is designed to do, and the healing seed grows, until a degree of healing can be felt and seen, even seen by people we come in contact with.

The healing seed of the word of God continues to grow until it yields results, which is healing!

Many because they do not know, understand and complete the process, do not experience healing!

More on the healing seed

Remember our seed?

The seed is the word of God.

The sower sows the word.

The sower is the person teaching the word to others.

The sower is each of us when we are reading, studying, meditating and/or thinking about the word.

We hear the seed of the word of God that tells us about what Jesus did to provide our healing.

Isa 53:4
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. KJV

We being good ground, understand the word that we hear.

We being good ground are not offended by the word that we heard.

Offense of the word like healing can come when some disparage it, deny that God heals today, or denies that God heals everyone that comes to Him.

Some are taught in their church that it may not be God's will to heal them.
That perhaps God even gave them that sickness in order to teach them something.

There was a leper that knew Jesus could heal him. The leper was not sure that it was Jesus' will to heal him.

Matt 8:2-3
2. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt , thou canst make me clean.

Jesus said "I will".

3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. KJV

OK, one might say. It was Jesus' will to heal the leper, we know that.

But is it His will to heal me?

Well, consider these scriptures.

The Bible says about God that He is not a respecter of persons.

Acts 10:34
Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons : KJV

That means if it is His will to heal one, it is His will to heal all.

All includes you.

Scripture says that Jesus never changes.

Heb 13:8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. KJV

That means that if it was His will to heal all that came to Him at one time in the past, which would be a yesterday.

Then it is His will to heal all that comes to Him today.

It is His will to heal all that will come to Him tomorrow.

Read thru the Gospels and you will find that the statement is made that He healed all.
They did have to make the decision to come to Him and believe.

Matt 8:16
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
KJV

Matt 4:24
And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. KJV

Now!

Here is a challenge for ya.

Find in scripture just one person that Jesus refused to heal for any reason.

You know that in all the people that came to Him to be healed there had to be at the very least just one old boy or girl that was pretty sorry.

Did Jesus ever tell anyone "now look, I am just not going to heal you because you are just to mean, ugly, have too many wrinkles, etc".

Nope!

Didn't happen, Jesus will heal anyone that comes to Him believing.

He gave us an advantage.

He gave us His word of healing and the word of God is seed.

We are good ground people.

We receive that Healing seed into our hearts.

We water and nourish that seed, as our brother mentioned.

We water and nourish, by after having heard and received the word into our heart, meditating on the seed.

We think about the seed, study the seed.

When laying in the bed at nite before sleep or when we wake at nite, we think about the seed.

We think about the seed when we are performing task that do not require our full mental attention.

We pray in tongues about the seed. Remember when you pray in tongues you are speaking mysteries directly to God from your spirit.

We are doing all this in order to let that seed take root and then grow up until it is full size.

We keep doing all this in order that once the seed has grown to full size that it then starts producing a harvest.

We keep doing all this in order that once the seed has grown to full size, has started producing a harvest, that the harvest fully matures.

End result.

We are fully healed!

Luke 17:6

Jesus said that if we did not understand the illustration(parable) of the sower we would not understand all parables.

Mark 4:13
And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? KJV

Now that we have some understanding of the parable of the sower lets look at another parable(illustration) Jesus gave.

We must look parables in the light of the parable of the sower, in which we learned that the seed is the Word of God and the sower sows the word.

The disciples had walked with Jesus for several years and had noticed that the things He did was done by faith. They desiring to be more like Him ask this question recorded in Luke 17.

We also desiring to be more like Him may ask the same question and learn the answer.

The apostles ask the Lord to tell them how to get more faith.

Luke 17:5
And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. KJV

I am sure that they did not expect to hear what Jesus told them.

Jesus told them "if ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed."

Luke 17:6
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. KJV

The word translated "as" is NT:5613 and means even as(like).

NT:5613
hos (hoce); probably adverb of comparative from NT:3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):

KJV - about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when ([-soever]), while, with all speed.
(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Jesus was saying "if ye had faith even as(like) a mustard seed.

He is not speaking of the size of the seed. He is saying that faith even as(like) a mustard seed must be sown.

Don't forget our parable that gives us light on other parables is about the sower in which the sower sows seeds. The seeds being the Word of God.
Therefore the sower sows the word.

Until a seed is sown it cannot produce a harvest. Until the word of God, which, is a seed, is sown, it cannot produce a harvest.

Faith will initiate the process that Jesus laid out for us in the illustration(parable) of the sower.

That process is to sow a seed in it proper place.

A mustard seed is sown in the ground. The ground does what it is designed to do and grows the seed.

The word of God is sown in our "hearts". Our heart being good ground does what it is designed to do and grows the seed of the word of God, which produces a harvest in us of the seed sown.

Right now we are speaking of the word of God regarding healing.

Therefore we call that word of God regarding healing "healing seed".

The “heart” as used here is the spirit of man.

Now this gets us into another Bible Subject that all do not agree on. That is the three parts of man, which is spirit, soul and body.

Do not want to get us off too far on another subject that we can spend the next year on.

The spirit of a man is where the Holy Spirit dwells in a born again person.

The spirit of man is where the seed of the word of God is sown(planted).

We being good ground receive the seed of Gods word in “our” spirit(heart), the seed of the word grows and produces in us a harvest.

That harvest causes a change in us whereby we “grow” in the things that our Father God has for us.

Jesus said "if ye had faith even as(like) a mustard seed, ye might say”.

Luke 17:6
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
KJV

Why would we “say” if we had faith even as(like) a mustard seed?

Because “saying” which is speaking is sowing(planting) the seed of the word of God.

Remember our main parable which gives us light to understand all parables.

The sower sows the word!

Healing Seed 2

Remember what our healing seed is?

Ps 103:1-3
103:1 A Psalm of David. Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; KJV

Isa 53:4
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. KJV

1 Peter 2:24
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. KJV

Matt 8:17
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. KJV

When we are seeking something that we really desire we focus on it.

That means we think about it constantly.

We talk about it.

Those things we really desire we talk about constantly.

We go over what we desire and how how we are working to obtain it.

We must be focused on the things of faith that we are desiring as well.

When we are truly desirous of healing we are willing to put effort into being healed.

If our faith is in doctors we go to the doctor regularly.

We are faithful to go to the pharmacy and buy the medicine the doctor prescribed.

We are faithful to take the medication when and as prescribed.

We do it day after day, week after week, even month after month if required in order to be healed.

I have heard some people say, even during the course of this thread, that putting forth the same intense effort in order to be healed by the word of God is TOO MUCH WORK!

In other words what they are saying is if it takes that much effort on my part I am not going to do it.

Yet, many are willing to put forth the same and even more effort to obtain healing from a doctor.

Many are willing to put forth the same and even more effort to obtain other things they desire.

If one is not willing to get serious about being healed then they will “try faith” and then cry and complain that faith does not work.

It was not faith that would not work it was them that would not put forth the effort to learn and do faith until it was a natural way of life and took no effort at all.

Faith is a rest when one learns and does faith. But one must “work” to enter into that rest of faith.

When one is in faith over any matter they are not troubled.

They are not troubled because they have reached a place where they are confident that God is true to His word and what they are believing for will come to pass.

When one is in faith about their children they are not worried about their children because they are confident that God is true to His word and that He is working with their children.

If anyone can help our children that are not doing what they should it is God. We can rest in faith knowing He is involved in their lives.

When one is in faith over healing they are not troubled or worried about it because they are confident that God is true to His word and what they are believing for will come to pass.

If you are seeking healing from God.

Let the healing seed we are using remain “in front” of you constantly.

Talk healing not sickness. Think healing not sickness.

Next we will take an example of an attitude of faith and how a person in faith responds in an urgent and serious matter from the Old Testament.

The Shunammite woman

So!

We have planted our healing seed of the word of God in our hearts by hearing the word concerning healing.

We have our scriptures.

We have heard the scriptures, therefore faith is active.

We did not allow tribulations, persecutions for the word’s sake, the cares of this world, other things entering in, nor the deceitfulness of riches to defeat us.

We are good ground and the word of healing we heard entered into out heart(spirit) and was firmly planted there.

We continue to meditate on, think about, and speak our healing scriptures (seed).

Now we must live where the rubber meets the road and continue to defeat the thoughts that come against us, saying that we won’t be healed, it won’t work for us, this is silly, etc.

Lets consider how a woman in the OT handled an urgent and serious situation.

Study carefully what this woman did.

What she was mindful to say to those around her.

What she was mindful not to say to those around her,

Study her actions in the different events that happen.

Ask yourself, “how would I have responded to this situation if I were in it?”

Her behavior gives us a clear and concise picture of how faith responds and receives what the word of God which is seed plants in us.

She shows us how to receive the harvest.

Ready?

All I am posting now is the story.

Please read thru and study it considering the above questions.

Next we will take a very close look the urgent and serious situation that the woman was facing and how she handled it, resulting in victory!

2 Kings 4:8-37

8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.
10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.
11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.
12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.
13 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.
14 And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.
15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.
16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.
17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.
19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother.
20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.
21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.
22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.
23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.
24 Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee.
25 So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite:
26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.
27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.
28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?
29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.
30 And the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.
31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.
32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.
33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord.
34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.
35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.
37 Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.

The Shunammite Woman 2

Elisha passed by the house of this lady and her husband continually and stopped at their house to eat.

The Lady perceived that Elisha was a man of God, mentioned that to her husband and they added a room onto their house for Elisha to stay in when he passed by there.

Elisha, because of her kindness to him ask what she needed.

Gehazi, Elisha’s servant told Elisha that she has no child and her husband is old.

Notice that the Lady told the prophet not to lie to her!

She did not want to be decieved!

16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.

The Woman conceived as Elisha said unto her and she had a son.

17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

The child grew, went out to field and fell, hurt his head.
The boy died as the Lady held him.

18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.
19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother.
20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.

Now, in order to get a perspective on what is happening, consider the way most people would react to such a situation.

Consider how you might react had God granted you a child when you had no hope of having one. Your child was born and a few years later was injured and died?

How many would “go to pieces” with grief, not having any hope for the child. It is urgent and serious for the child is dead.

How many would immediately give up on the dead child having no hope.

The child is dead!

Nothing can be done now!

The child is dead!

Most would immediately break down and cry and cry and cry.

Most would blame God.

God! You gave me a child and then took him. Why do you hate me so to do that to me?

Is that how the Shunammite Lady responded?

No!

She calmly laid the boy on the prophets bed, shut the door and went out.

No tears, no crying, no uncontrollable grief!

What she did was to just lay the boy on the prophets bed, shut the door and go out.

She has not said a word to this point. In an urgent and serious situation she has a guard on her mouth and does not speak a word.

She does not speak sadness!

She does not speak loss!

She does not speak grief!

She does not even speak the fact that the boy died!

She lays her dead son on the prophets bed, shut the door and went out!

21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.

She called to her husband.

What did she say to him?

She said that she was going quickly, she used the word “run” to see the man of God and request someone to go with her.

What did she not say to her husband?

She did not mention one word to her husband about the boy dying.

She did not cry to him about it.

She guarded her mouth and was mindful of the words she spoke.

22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

Her husband asked her what was going on.

When she answered she was mindful of her words and said “it shall be well”.

Her son, only child, no chance of having another, was dead.

Her response to her husbands question?

“IT SHALL BE WELL”.

Is something wrong with this Lady?

How can she be so callous?

How can she be so uncaring?

She did not even tell her husband what happened.

The Shunammite Woman 3

We are not given much information about the Shunammite Woman and her husband.

The story starts out with Elisha passing by their house on the way to Shunem and the Lady inviting him to have something to eat.

Then, every time Elisha passed by their house he would stop and eat.

Then the Lady had a room built onto their house for Elisha to stay in when he passed by.

We are given no history of the Lady before that.

We learn a little more from Adam Clarke’s Commentary.

[Elisha passed to Shunem] This city was in the tribe of Issachar, to the south of the brook Kishon, and at the foot of Mount Tabor.

[Where was a great woman] In Pirkey Rab. Eliezer, this woman is said to have been the sister of Abishag, the Shunammite, well known in the history of David.

Instead of great woman, the Chaldee has, a woman fearing sin; the Arabic, a woman eminent for piety before God. This made her truly great.
(from Adam Clarke's Commentary, Electronic Database. Copyright © 1996, 2003 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

The Woman had a knowledge of and devotion to God.

The Woman had faith!

How do we know that she had faith.

Because of the way she responded to an urgent and serious matter.

Because we know from scripture that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

Rom 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. KJV

The only way she could have faith is by hearing the word of God.

Remember another couple in scripture that had not a child?

A couple in which the woman was barren.

Remember Abraham and Sarah?

The Lord and two angels stopped by Abraham’s tent on the plains of Mamre.

They were on their way to observe and verify the moral condition of Sodom and Gomorrah.

That is another but also revealing story.

While at Abraham’s tent The Lord told Abraham and Sarah that He would return according to the time of life and that Sarah would have a son.
Gen 18:10
And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. KJV

Abraham at the time was about 100 years old and Sarah not far behind at about 90, well past the age of child bearing.

Gen 18:11
Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. KJV

When Sarah heard this she laughed at the thought that an old woman like her should have a child.

Gen 18:12-15
12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
13 And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14 Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
KJV

Sarah laughed when she first heard, however it is evident that she repented and also believed what the Lord said.

What The Lord told Abraham and Sarah came to pass.

Gen 21:1-3
21:1 And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did unto Sarah as he had spoken.
2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
KJV

We are told that Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him as righteousness.

Rom 4:3
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
KJV

Abraham believed what God had promised him!

Remember, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

Abraham heard the word of God, or what God promised him, therefore faith “came”.

The promise is summed up in “I have made thee the father of many nations”.

Rom 4:17
(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. KJV

God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations. That is a lot of decendents.

When God promise Abraham that, Abraham had no children.
Abraham had no hope according to the natural means of having children as his wife Sarah was barren.

When The Lord told them on the plains of Mamre that according to the time of life (about nine months) they would have a son they were both well past the age of natural child bearing.

What hope did they have in the natural of having a child?

Absolutely none!

No chance!

Not going to happen!

Except God promised!

Abraham believed God.

Abraham had faith in God!

Abraham believed what God had promised!

Abraham was not “limited” to hope in the natural way of being a father!

Abraham had the hope that can only come from a promise of God.

A God that does not lie!

Therefore Abraham believed not in natural hope, there was no hope there, he and Sarah both were too old!

Abraham believed what God promised and his hope was in what God said.

Rom 4:18-21
18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb:

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
KJV

We will pick it up here next time.

Abraham

Abraham believed what God promised and his hope was in what God said.

Rom 4:18-21
18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

We have another example of how faith lives!

Weak faith considers what is happening in the natural.

Weak faith considers the circumstances.

Weak faith considers the negatives one is facing.

Abraham was not weak in faith!

He did not consider that in the natural his body was “dead” or incapable of reproduction.

He did not consider the circumstance that he was about 100 years old!

He did not consider the fact that Sarah’s womb was not capable of reproduction!

19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb:

Because Abraham was not weak in faith he did not stagger at the promise of God through unbelief!

Unbelief makes one stagger at the promise of God!

When one staggers they do not receive.

The Shunammite Woman did not stagger either.

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

When we stay strong in the face of everything screaming at us that we won’t receive what God promised and do not stagger we give glory to God!

Abraham did not stagger because he was fully persuaded.

The seed of God’s word had been planted in him firmly over a period of time.

From the first time God told him that he would have descendents until the son was born was about 25 years.

That is time to become fully persuaded and remain fully persuaded.

That is also more than enough time to stagger through unbelief.

The seed of the Word of God was firmly planted in Abraham!

Abraham received the harvest, a son!

Abraham was fully persuaded that what God had promised him, God was able also to perform!
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. KJV

The promise was the seed of the word of God that was planted in Abraham’s and Sarah’s hearts.

Thru a period of years that seed was thought about by Abraham and meditated on until he became fully persuaded that God does not lie and that God would do what He had promised!

We must also stay with the seed of God planted in our hearts until we, like Abraham, are fully persuaded!

We must also stay with the seed of God planted in our hearts until we, like Abraham, do not stagger at the promise of God through unbelief.

When we are fully persuaded unbelief cannot make us stagger.

The seed of the word of God that was planted in our hearts was

Ps 103:3
Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; KJV

Isa 53:4
Surely he hath borne our griefs (sickness and disease), and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

KJV

Before we can be like the example of the Shunammite Woman.

Before we can be like the example of Abrham.

We must like Abraham be fully persuaded!

We know when we are fully persuaded.

Some will honestly say, “I am not yet fully persuaded”.

The may ask “what do I do to become fully persuaded”?

We do not receive the full harvest by faith until after we are fully persuaded.

When the seed of the word of God is planted in our “good ground” spirits by hearing the word of God.

The seed starts the growing process.

We stay with the same word of God by study, by meditating on the word, by thinking about the word of God and most importantly by saying the word of God.

We must think healing and see our self, healed, not sick.

That begins to form in us the hope of healing.
Hope like Abraham had which is not a natural hope.
It is a “supernatural hope” brought about by God’s healing seed of His word.

It is the hope that because God said it He will also perform it.

We continue in study, reading, meditating thinking about the healing scriptures.

This make the hope for healing stronger and stronger as we are becoming fully persuaded.

As we fill our selves with the healing word of God, the healing word of God becomes abundant in our hearts(innermost being).

Therefore as Jesus said “out of the abundance of the heart(innermost being) the mouth speaks!

Matt 12:34
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. KJV

What is in our heart (innermost being) in abundance will come out!

We will speak it!

We will begin to speak God’s healing word about our self!

We begin to say things like “by His stripes I am healed”!

We begin to say things like “He is the God that forgives my iniquities and heals my diseases”!

We begin to say things like “Surely He bore my sickness and disease, therefore I do not have to bear them because He bore them for me.”

We begin to say things like “I am healed by His stripes”.

We even begin to say things like “Jesus, it is sure good to be healed”.

We say these things even though the fact is that we may be hurting!

We say these things even though the fact is that we feel sick, maybe even we feel very sick!

We do not rehearse the problem by confessing that we are hurting!

We do not rehearse the problem by confessing that we feel sick!

We do not rehearse the problem by confessing that we feel very sick.

We do not rehearse the problem by confessing that we have a fever!

We do not rehearse the problem by confessing that we are throwing up!

We confess or speak the reality of God’s word, firmly planted in us.

We confess “by His stripes I am healed”.

Remember the Shunammite Woman!

All She would say is “it is well”.

We will continue next time.
