Hi everyone! Some of you may remember me (though things around here have changed quite dramatically since I was previously around!). I actually return with some rather unfortunate news. I was recently diagnosed with endometrial cancer.

Of course, I would appreciate all of your prayers and thoughts at this difficult time.

But I also wanted to ask another question, as I haven't necessarily been able to sort it out myself. Eventually, my treatment will result in a hysterectomy. With God's blessings that will be a few years down the road after I've been able to safely have children. However, I'm wondering how the church would view this? Would that mean I would no longer be able to have a sexual relationship with my husband?

Rest assured, I have already decided that I will follow the advice of my doctors and do what is necessary to, God willing, get rid of the cancer. I also plan on having a normal marital relationship with whatever man I marry. I'm simply curious where the church would stand on this issue.

Thanks and I hope all of my old friends are doing well! :)

You would be supported by the Church. You have a right to take care of your health. And yes, post hysterectomy you can have sex. Seriously, talk with your priest. Sex is more than procreating. You seem to be open to life. Not all of us are as fortunate to be as fertile and healthy as others are.

If keeping your reproductive faculties intact would mean it would cost your life, the Church automatically grants you a dispensation allowing you the hysterectomy. If you're unsure of all the details, you should absolutely talk to a priest, but I do know that the Church does not condemn hysterectomies under these conditions. I certainly don't want to be crass (I can understand how this news is probably devastating for you), but this type of condition would be the same as a person with a bad case of gangrene in an arm or leg; the Church condemns mutilation, but in that scenario, removing the affected limb means that the gangrene would not be permitted to spread, thus saving the person's life. So: you go ahead and do what your doctors tell you to do, kiddo. Save your life. :)

May God help you. And it would not mean that you and your husband would not be allowed to have sexual relations.

God bless you. Praying for you. You can do what ever you need to treat the cancer. Your intent is not to prevent pregnancy but to treat cancer or prevent it from returning. You are doing nothing wrong. You'll be fine. Sorry for this cross. I'll remember you in my prayers. Did you ever find a cause or cure for your migraines?

Thank you for the supportive words, everyone. I really do appreciate the prayers immensely.

Yes, and something about being told that you may not be able to create life at all makes you want it just that much more!

I did! Well, not a "cure" exactly. I went to a specialty center in Chicago where they managed to treat the migraines and now I only have (at most) a handful of mild ones each month. The only time I get them now is when I'm with my boyfriend and constantly smiling (something about the strain it puts on the muscles in my head?), but I'm certainly not complaining about that. It has been a HUGE blessing! :)

I couldn't have said it any better than benedicta did. Your intentions are for your body's health and has nothing to do with preventing pregnancy.

Sorry for such a huge cross. Hopefully there are no issues afterwards. :( Prayers for you!
