I have a question: Does anyone actually personally know another Christian who really has their panties in a twist about this cup thing? This week in particular I've noticed a real increase in the two prong attack on Christians/Christianity promoting the believe that people of faith are 1) stupid, 2) bad.

Besides this silly cup story - there's also a story in the news about some nut saying we need to repent of watching Harry Potter movies, and another one saying children of Christians are lacking in empathy. Yet, when I stop and think about it - I can't think of one Christian who actually cares about the cup thing. I am coming to believe that the story is a complete fabrication, or the guy who made the original YouTube video made it specifically so there could be a news story about it to make Christians look bad. The Harry Potter story - more of the same. Christians lacking in empathy? Seriously? Go out and find me a homeless shelter that isn't run by some variety of Christian.

Who is benefiting from promoting and repeating these stores? Not us. No, this is all a pre-cursor of things to come. Society needs to believe we are bad/stupid/insert some other bad thing here - before they can start really persecuting us.
You may be onto somthing. While I am not defending some of these actions by Christians, especially concerning stupid coffee cups. I just can't help but notice these reports coming out leading up to Thanksgiving & Christmas that are attacking Christians. It's ironic Christians are being attacked for being stupid with ths Starbucks story, crazy concerning Harry Potter, and mean(the lacking empathy story). I'm not jumping to conclusions but it is really ironic all this demonizing of Christians around the holidays. You make fascinating observations, I'll pay more attention to your posts.

To be fair, most of what I see is Christians making fun of the very idea that there's any controversy. Well, and then there are clowns like Trump and those Tory MPs in England who suggested boycotting Starbucks or something. But I think everybody understands that it's performance art.

But, what Christians?? Do you know a single person who cares about the coffee cups? Seriously?

And here's the thing - when we post/repost these stories designed to make Christians look bad are we any better than the Jews who cooperated with Nazi Germany thinking they'd be spared? They weren't spared and we won't be either.

Zaida,
im thinking along the lines you are. I think it was a propaganda hit piece. The media picked up something a random preacher said and decided to publicize it to bring out the christian bashers so the evangelicals can take the bait and defend themselves over a non--existant situation.
I also believe many people have seen through this media provocation and may now realize how the powers that be sow seeds of division. They have showed their hand at how they are able to turn one group of people against another segment of people.

GetReligion (which is run by, among many others, Terry Mattingly, and Orthodox Christian) noted that major media outlets kept an even keel on this, for the most part. It's social media that's blowing up, not the traditional media.

It is only on social media that I've seen any angst about this either way, with most people saying that it's a ridiculous thing to protest, and a minority saying that it's a sign of taking the Christ out of Christmas or whatever. Kinda like this thread, actually.

This thread is really kind of a form of social media.
I'm finding out more about what's on social media through TAW lately more so than being on Facebook lol.

Haha, I saw the starbucks coffee cup story in only one headline and passed by it without reading it. It was on CF on the list of top topics in general discussion that appear, one of CF atheist posters sarcastically saying something like starbucks strikes blow on war with christmas or something. So this thread informed me of the supposed controversy.

Pwrhaps the owner of starbucks is a publicity genius? I remember he caused a controversy by saying his baristas should write on the cups whether the customer wants to talk about race???

Now imagine the publicity his company will get if he decides to add back the nipples on his mermaid logo.

There is nothing like brightening up the hopes of a single 35 year old woman by telling her, her coffee cup stain is saying she will find love in a few weeks.:p

This thread would have been 100 posts long if you had 3 greeks and 3 turks arguing over whether it should be called greek coffee or turkish coffee

Imagine how long it would be if we brought Greeks, Turks, Arabs, Persians and Armenians in on a discussion over who invented baklava!

Turks never invent anything. They take something that an Armenian, Syriac person, or Greek invented, murder or send the inventor into exile, give the thing in question a Turkish name, and then claim it as a Turkish invention.

There, I've just cut down the hypothetical thread by about 25 pages. Or increased it by about 50. Whichever.
