It's not cheating if you can make it work. But if I (personally) was on foot for very long, carrying "everything", one or two of those uppers would probably get left behind, which brings me back (personally) to "one gun".

That's the hard part, knowing what our individual worst case scenario will be. If I could stay at my residence without any outside threat, I could grow a massive garden, stock up on everything, keep my firearm and ammo collection, reloading equipment, etc.

I work near enough home to make it in 2.5 hours or less on foot / 13 minutes by car. . . no interstates, no bridges. I have garden, fruit and nut trees/ vines. . . my own water and septic & I back up to a vast area of woodlands. My worst case doesn't have me on major migration routes (zombie apocalypse) & I am far enough from the nearest nuke plant a Fukushima event could possibly but improbably make my water tick a little near a Geiger counter. . . a 500kt detonation at that plant would not affect us at all, according to current (typical) direction and wind-speed (wind out of the northeast at 13mph according to the weather station closest the plant . .. I sail down there so I have an app on my phone that gives me wind data near the nuke plant. . . how cool is that ?!? ) It is a bit windy today but not significantly. Anyway, my worst case doesn't have me far from home, so there isn't a lot of carrying/ no long treks.

I have an extremely favorable situation as well. Hopefully in a worst case scenario, the wrong people won't notice.

A lever action .357. It's got enough pop for medium game. It's got enough accuracy for small game. It's got enough capacity for a short skirmish. It will not break down and it can feed multiple types of ammunition as long as they are rimmed and the proper diameter.

Hard to find and expensive but absolutely yes...wish that I'd have gone .357 instead of .44 years ago (yep, have an old Marlin .44 + at least 400 rds of .44 Mag & Special bought when it wasn't quite as expensive as now ;) )

I've never bench rested a standard model 10/22 or an AR-style .22 to get a comparison under identical conditions. Offhand, both are more accurate than I can consistently hold, but I seem to do better the S&W MP-22's more often than other variations. I love those things, and apparently, they kinda like me too.

I've seen amazing accuracy with customized versions of both platforms. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Edit: I've had a Marlin 65(C) since about 1982 and have never been disappointed with its accuracy or saw the need to upgrade.

My father got a Rossi for under $500.

With the influx of inexpensive ARs that would be a viable choice...saw the entry-level S&W Sport AR for $600 at a local shop...and new Ruger AR is supposed to be competitively priced...certainly a little more to an AR but nothing insurmountable...owned 2 since I got out of military in '85...(CAR-15 and Bushmaster PostBan) but ended up selling them off.

No sense buying what you could "build" yourself. AR lowers can be had as low as $40 & a fine lower kit for $70 & a complete upper from a reputable source can be had for like $370 . . . that is like $480 and an FFL transfer fee. So like $505 out the door.

Yeah I'm not the most mechanically inclined individual...I've heard folks saying it isn't difficult...feel more confident paying the extra $100 for a Ruger or S&W knowing it's put together right ;)

It's not difficult to build an AR, but it does require attention to detail even if you're mechanically inclined. Buying an assembled gun is not a bad way to go, it can be cheaper than any build I have done because I tend to get carried away with improvements, like aftermarket match grade triggers and so on.

The first one I assembled about 35 years ago was at a time before civilian interest and the resultant market went crazy. And as I recall, except for the lower receiver, all of the parts were unbranded, so I bought according to the cheapest price. It ran great and still is. For factory assembled guns, the local guys seem to favor Windham Weaponry and S&W, but there are a lot of good ones besides those, some of which cost a little less or quite a bit more.

Colt's LE6920 is very worthy of consideration and can be had new for $850 and sometimes less.

I've seen Colt at good prices...really looking for Ruger's AR....want to stick with someone I know and these days there are a lot of folks out there I'm not familiar with...they may be quite excellent but still....

The Ruger would be a great choice, especially for the money. The following link is for a 31 minute review, and this review provides a comprehensive description of all the features, which are many. I saw a "buy it now" price on Gun Broker for $599.
