• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi,

I have a habit with obsessing over the things I enjoy in life, to the point where they become idols. For one, when I do enjoy things I feel like I shouldn't be; that I'll start enjoying them more than God and kind of feel guilty. When I do get things that I like, I end up liking them so much I make them into idols. It's hard to find the balance. Do other people with OCD experience this; obsessing over the good things (as well as the bad things) in life and turning good things into idols? How do you combat this? Thanks!

Dear Tuliplane, I see that no one has responded to your post. I wish I could help you, but I suffer from the same obsession. I've gone so far as to give up things that I think are idols. These include CD's and music and my collection of fashion magazines. I've enjoyed fashion from the time I was very young, and I know these types of magazines are not very edifying (I usually tear out the articles and any pages that are objectionable). However, I cannot seem to give them up permanently -- I always end up building new collections and feel guilty about them being idols. I don't spend an inordinate amount of time pouring over magazines or listening to music, but I still worry about idolatry.

I hope that maybe someone will address our particular concern. I do understand what you're going through.
