I'd just assume it meant with thought and logic and public participation, doing it in truth, and all your heart, emotions, being (spirit). When I think of spirit I think of what a person really is, the very essence of them.

In English, there are three words spirit, mind and soul to express beings which transcend body. To my understanding, spirit is for faith, morality and worship, mind is for reason, ethics and knowledge, and soul is for emotion, law and behavior. Spirit transcends mind and shines lights in mind, and mind transcends soul and shines lights in soul. So, your spirit is the most top of you.

For God is spirit, directly "worship in spirit" means worship in God. This is very correct, but practically you should do something more, that is you should prepare yourself well enough to make sure you are on your most top with your own spirit, upon your whole mind which in turn upon you whole soul.

According to the gospel of John (quoting Jesus): "For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth." John 4:24

I understand that we must worship God in truth. But how do you worship God in Spirit?
D.A. Carson does a superb job with addressing this question in his book The Gospel According to John (1991) pp.224-226.

Carson rightfully points out that Jesus was contrasting the tension between Israel and the Samaritans where the Jews correctly recognised that the Temple in Jerusalem was the one and only center for worship, whereas the Samaritans believed it was on Mt. Gerizim. Jesus advanced on this by saying that these things will soon pass away where in the future (which is now here in the presence of Jesus) that the Children of God will have no need of temples but where they will be able to worship both in the Eschatological Spirit and in truth, without the need for extraneous temple procedures and Laws.

Two brief excerpts from Carson's book:

"In the period up to Jesus' ministry, it was entirely correct to say that 'salvation is from the Jews' (v. 22). Yet a time is coming and has now come (lit. 'the hour is coming and now is': cf. notes on 2:4; 4:21) when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.' There is an advance on v. 21: not only is the time coming, but it has come. This oxymoron is a powerful way of asserting not only that the period of worship 'in spirit and truth' is about to come and awaits only the dawning of the 'hour', i.e. Jesus' death, resurrection and exaltation, but also that this period of true worship is already proleptically present in the person and ministry of Jesus before the cross". . .

"The expression the true worshippers does not make a distinction between worshippers after the ministry of Jesus (the true worshippers) and those before the ministry of Jesus (presumably the false worshippers). Both true and false worshipper could be found under the terms of the old covenant, and both can be found appealing to the new covenant as well. Rather, the point is that with the coming of the 'hour' the distinction between true worshippers and all others turns on factors that make the ancient dispute between the conflicting claims of the Jerusalem temple and Mount Gerizim obsolete. Under the eschatological conditions of the dawning hour, the true worshippers cannot be identified by their attachment to a particular shrine, but by their worship of the Father in spirit and truth".

Man is created spirit, soul, and body. Truth is "all the counsel of God" ---His Word of Truth (Holy Bible); and our spirit is our mind (directed toward God); and our soul is that part of our body that is self (our will, our awareness, our feelings, our desires, etc.). We need to use our mind, our will and desire, and direct our body to God. He wants to possess us fully. Just reasoning about God is not faith and a relationship as God wants.

There is a clue in the previous verse... "the time is coming...", a new (testament) thing whereby man should have the Spirit of God within by being "born again".
Jesus was already anointed ("and now is") to he was able to have the Father-Son relationship with God that He wants.

Receiving the Holy Spirit is detailed in Acts 2.

Put in it's simplest terms.

To worship God in spirit and truth is to have God's holy spirit and let ourselves be guided by it. Worshiping God and living our lives in harmony with revealed truth found in God's word.
