The Torah portion for this week is Mispatim Exodus 21:1 to 24:18

Exodus 24:9-11 caught my attention, first because I did not recall reading it before which surely I have and secondly because it is so interesting. My Hebrew is minimal so I was hoping to get some general comments regarding the words in these verses.

Vie al moshe vah haren nadav vabeewho vshevim mitzkehnee yish-ra-el

These are similar words to verse 24:1, in 24:9 I notice it is translated as: Then went up Moses, and Aaron, and Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. Moses is mention first, then before Aaron, Abihu and the seventy elders there is a vav (and) but not in front of <nadav>. Could this word be a title of Aaron or something?

Vah yir uu et el lo hee yishrael veh tah chat raug lauv beh mah eh shea liv not ha shaf ear uu cH etzem hashameem lathar

Vel atzeelay bney yishrael lo shel lecH yahdo vayecHitzu et ha elohim vayavlu vayshtu

I will be checking my lexicon, etc but would welcome any comments.

Not a word I'm familiar with, but then again I'm no expert.

The closest I can find in my dictionary is Nadavah, which translates as donation or charity... and makes no sense to me.

Good luck, I'm curious myself.

Anyone else find Exodus to be a very feminist book?

Anyway - on the Hebrew:
I gotta use my own transliteration, sorry to but I can't think so well otherwise

Vayaal Moshe veAharon Nadav vaAvihu veshiv'im miziqnei Israel

Hebrew really didn't use much punctuation so this ought to be read: "And [they] went up, Moses and Aaron, Nadav and Avihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel."

Nadav was Avihu's brother and Aaron's son.

Exd 6:23 And Aaron took him Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Naashon, to wife; and she bare him Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

Also you see them again, doing some not so great stuff...
Lev 10:1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.

Which is why Eleazar was the next High Priest.

Heh heh, good job.

Now I feel slightly embarrassed for not knowing that....

As one of my Torah professors said, "The impression one gets is that the reason the lord choose Moses to lead the people out, was that if he'd chosen one of the women it wouldn't have been a miracle!"

Doesn't seem far off to me....

I, too, should have been able to figure that one out, but then I can't even find my shoes on some days. It takes my wife to tell me where I left them.

I was actually more surprised by the next two verses and I will do some research on those. But in verse 9 wouldn't it be more normal to have a vav before Nadav as was done with the others?

You could do it, yes. I think it's a common stylistic thing to do though to couple brothers' or closely associated names together - Moses and Aaron, Nadav and Avihu, Simon and Andrew etc.

What about the next verses were you wondering? They're pretty much word for word in the English translation that I've got.

verse 10 ha shamayim is translated as heavens in Gen. 1:1 could it refer to clouds here?

Hmmm.  I'd have to say not really. It basically means sky. Which could be cloudy, but the word doesn't imply it.

So nobody else thinks Exodus is slanted into being a pro-female book?

I find it interesting that the Lord uses Moses to save the Israelites, but the women are always having to save Moses!

Did anyone notice I goofed? This was not the portion for last week, I forgot to turn my calendar I was looking at the wrong week, sorry about that. Though I have been reading other parts of the Bible, I don't check the calendar but once in a while, I am so embarrassed! Oh well, I'll be on track next year, although I remember saying that last year. Pekudei is the one for this week. Right?

Dude. The fact that you HAVE a calendar with the parashot hashavua is probably doing better than most of us I think.
