Self harm seems to be a growing psychological problem in our society. There must be some underlying psychosis that causes people to mutilate themselves.

In post #7, it appears to be a cultural practice and has some tradition and meaning to it. In the first post, this guy didn't even know why he did this to his ears.

Human sacrifice was a cultural practice that had meaning to the Aztecs but i still think there is some psychological pathology involved that ought not to be accepted. Doing violence to oneself shows some sort of lack of self love no matter or perhaps because of the peer pressure involved.

Good point. I agree. It would be an excellent study to delve into and how it, on a deep level, is possibly tied into "self loathing".

You say psychological pathology in self mutilation cases "ought not" be accepted?

Several abnormal psychological conditions can cause one to self harm, with Borderline personality disorder being one of them.

I don't see this any differently from getting tattooed. I also place scarification in the same category. Personally, I find none of them to be aesthetically pleasing looks. However, it's big business to help folks undo their permanent decisions. Honestly, good for the doctor for profiting off of the poor judgment of others once they've wised up.

(shivers) Nope, won't do that! I ask our young adults to PLEASE stop and think before doing anything like that. My D21 got a tattoo anyway - she picks places she can conceal. Blood banks love my blood type, and I go for other people. I hate very minute of it too..lol! Needles and me just don't get along!

I'm glad the man was able to fix his ears though!

Yet, non-gauged pierced ears are considered perfectly acceptable in women. So, most of us don't have an aboslute rule against body modification by means of deliberate, controlled bodily harm.
Because if you take out those types of piercings the hole will close up eventually and/or isn't noticeable. There's a huge difference between something that can easily be undone and something that causes long-term and often permanent physical effects.
