well, I guess that's what happens when you have a democracy where politicians (some--not all) are up for the highest bidder. In almost any other democracy, that would be corruption & bribery, and punishable by law to jail time. Here, people just accept and take it for granted.

What are you saying about the farm bill Morat. And how much do you know about how the small family farm works? I'm interested in knowing.

Ohh,  well just so you know that their's a big difference between the family farm and corporate farms.  My husband is a farmer, and without some of the subsidaries we get we would not be making it.  We are already now having to work numbers just to figure out what we are gonna be able to plant.  Corn, the most profitable crop, looks to be out of the question cause of irrigation gas prices are sky high.

I think part of the problem is the two party system, Democrates and Republicans are just too cozy. I'd like to see a few more parties, because at the very least that'll give us a few more whistle-blowers.

If you think petroleum is expensive in America you should see British prices. It really is just what you are accustomed to paying. In UK it is around $1.22 a litre about $6 a gallon. Most of it is taxation (though agricultural and other essential needs are discounted compared to self service stations). With middle east tensions it is expected to increase further.

 

And I agree the farmers are frequently scapegoats in their own country while we import too much food we can already grow ourselves. A country for security should be allowed to be capable to grow it's own food. Some particular farmer hating people seem to forget where their dinners come from. It might come from supermarket shelves but it had to get there from some source. If a country loses too much of it's ability to grow own food then it becomes dependant on others.




 

yeah, but see, the thing about free trade is, if some other country eg. Mexico can do it cheaper than you, then giving out government subsidies is distorting free market forces, and you aren't achieving maximum social welfare.

Yea web petroleum is expensive. But we use natural gas for our irrigation needs. Our sections are 640 acres, and right now natural gas is $9.60 per MCP. LOL asked hubby what in world MCP means and he said meteric cubic feet or something. Guess I'll have to go dig out a gas bill and look for myself. I know a couple years ago when gas prices went so high our monthly gas bills for irrigation jumped from about 5 thousand a month to 20 to 30 thousand a month. Ugh guess I should say we farm 4 sections.

And no subsidaries arn't hurting free market. If you look at countries like Argentina and Mexico you will find that these chemical/seed companies sell their product for a discount that US farmers do not get.

Oh sorry, my wife who is American tends use the word gas for what I call petrol. It is an easy confusion.

Iiiikes....I can't remember his name, but there's this loon who has late night commercials, running around with horn rimmed glasses and a jacket with a whole bunch of question marks on it, and he's pitching a book about how to get free grants and money from the Government....maybe hes not a stupid as he looks?
