Why should it be inclusive? Is that not just an assumption on your part? Sure many may think it should be inclusive but where does it say that it should be? What if the intention of an anthem is something different like presenting an ideal of what the govt would like to see?

Because of the word 'national'. It represents and is for the nation. Not for part of it. It's not a Christian anthem, it's a national anthem.

You think it's ok that the national anthem excludes 40% of the country?

You haven't answered my question. Why does it have to represent everyone? Yes it is a national anthem but that still does not mean it has to represent every person in the nation. That is an impossible task to begin with.

I'm going to say yes on the basis that while I don't know how many don't like the Australian anthem or feel they are not represented by it I really don't care. I'd personally prefer it to stay the same because I think there are better things to spend money on than changing an anthem or a flag. Your question though has no bearing at all on my question. You are still assuming that it must represent everyone. Just like government policies generally are not so much about what they actually do but encourage people in the direction the govt wants them to go it could be similar with the national anthem.

It's not an assumption, it's a view.

It's my view that our national anthem should represent all New Zealanders. It should be as inclusive as possible, and not marginalize signnificant groups of people with the meaning of its lyrics. I hold that position regardless of whether those lyrics coincide with my personal beliefs or not. I don't want lyrics that send a message of 'god doesn't exist' because that would exclude and marginalize a significant group in our country.

If your view is that you are happy to have an anthem that excludes large groups of people from relating to it, because that view happens to co-incide with your personal belief; if you are happy to exclude and mariginalize significant groups of people; if you want your view represented and everyone else can go to hell, then stand strong with your view.

That view tells me a lot about the type of person you are. I'm not that type of person.

New Zealand already has a perfectly inclusive anthem. It's called Advance Australia Fair.

and your dishonesty tells me a lot about what kind of person you are. Why is it that you decide to post with no integrity at all? There is not one single post here that you can point to to support your claim that I am happy with the anthem because it it happens to coincide with my personal beliefs. I made it very clear that I do not identify with the Australian anthem but I do not want it changed because I consider it a waste of money that could be spent on better things.
Your comment here about me also contradicts a statement you made earlier in this thread where you acknowledged that I agree the anthem should be as inclusive as possible.

Do I really need to explain the difference between 'if you hold the view that...' and 'you hold the view that...'?

When you answer 'yes' to my question about being happy to exclude 40% o population, which is on this very page, it's fair to say your position is not one of staunch support for inclusiveness.

While my previous post was a reply to you it was also generically aimed at anyone who sits on the other side of my view that I outlined above.

what I took issue with is your lie about why I have the view I do.

If you are making a response to everybody then you should make that clear. When you quote a persons post it is fair to assume you are making a comment to that individual.

Its like the debate of changing the New Zealand Flag. People go 'Lets change it' and others go 'Lets not change it'. To me the New Zealand anthem has been around for so long so to me I think the New Zealand anthem should stay as its a part of New Zealand to me. I have no other oppinion apart from this and I think the New Zealand flag should not change because it is and has always been a part of New Zealand culture has it not? But if Bob Jones feels so strongly about it, dont you think he should inform the New Zealand Prince Minister John Key about this and John Key can make sure it goes in a referendum like the New Zealand Flag Debate that way everyones oppinion gets heard.

1 - it's only been our national anthem since 1977. Not that long.

2 - anti-change has been rolled out as a reason for continuing racism, slavery, sexism and every other bad idea humanity has ever had. It's the argument of the intellectually vapid and is usually just a shield for a hidden agenda. Such as 'I'm Christian therefore want to shove my religion down non-christians throats, whether they want it or not'.

I didn't mock any other nation's cricket teams. New Zealand is not a nation.

Then we'd better get rid of our flag and our national anthem. How dare we pretend to be a nation!
Looking forward to watching the Abs play in the RWC in England...Go the Abs! ;)
