I wonder how many times.. if any... you had heard of Cyrus before you read my posts...
yet he plays a very important part in OT history and prophecy.
Isaiah calls Cyrus God's anointed... God's shepherd who does God's will to restore the
city of Jerusalem and the temple.
Cyrus rescued Israel from Babylonian captivity and decreed the rebuilding of the temple.
He was a hero to the ancient Israelites... an OT archetype of Christ.
Along with Babylon, Cyrus is represented in symbolic form in the book of Revelation.
.
Don't worry, I'm picking up what you're throwing down. I too believe that Revelation 16's mentioning of the drying up of th Euphrates River was a literary device to cause the readers to recall Cyrus' conquest of Babylon. It is rather interesting and confusing tough.
I want to call to mind something that interrupts the sequence of the sixth plague, namely Jesus' words:
"Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame (Revelation 16:15 NASB)."
Why the interruption? The drying up of the Euphrates River calls to mind how Cyrus took Babylon unaware. This matches what Jesus said about coming like a thief in the night. In the midst of this suprise sandwich is the gathering of the kings of the earth to Mount Megiddo for war for the great day of God Almighty (Rev. 16:12-16). Why the inclusio?
What is the author getting at?
