Do you care what celebrities have to say?

What do you think about celebrities and their political opinions?

  • They should leave their opinions out of award show speeches.

  • They are entitled to use their celebrity status to express their viewpoints at any time.

Lately there have been a lot of celebrities speaking out against the War in Iraq.  I have seen them on tv shows, commercials, radio shows, everything...personally I find this a little bit annoying as they aren't really qualified to talk about politics anymore than me or any other average joe is.  It frustrates me that celebrities use their status to get on news shows an argue about it.  I guess I think that political opinions should stay out of the workplace (teachers spouting opinions to students, ect.) Since we expect teachers not to be forcing their opinions on students, I wish the celebrities would shut up about at the grammy's.  I'm sorry this is probably way out there, but I just get annoyed seeing Genine Gerafolo (spelling?) on Fox and Friends, why don't they have me on there, I'm just as qualified to voice my opinion as she is.....what do you all think about celebrities speaking out against/for the war in iraq?

I think that they have every right to. If they speak the truth, then they are fine, if they say something stupid, they are in the papers for the next 2 days. lol. It's really up to them! However, yes i know what you mean.. many celebs have less brain cells then a door mat, and many have some pretty silly beliefs and express them in OTT ways. Yet some, such as Bono for instance, freely speak about their views and don't get chastised for it. Why, because they are respected, and are known for their beliefs, almost as much as their careers!
Simple stating that all Celebs should shut up is a bit strong. Many have lots of good stuff to say, others don't.

I have no problem with some of them, others should speak a little less often, if atall, heh.

I'm against the war, but no, I do not normally have to care what celebrities have to say. In fact, I think they cause the anti-war effort more harm than good, as those who blindly follow what they're told can now slam anti-war sentiment as a result of "those Hollywood liberals," or "those California fluffheads."

I'm from California, and I may indeed be a "fluffhead," depending on your opinion, but celebrities are not what made me oppose the war.

As a matter of fact, I don't really care what Hollywood celebrities think.

Until they're willing to actually educate themselves on what's going on outside of their little fantasy world (Hollywood), they need to keep their mouths shut. ESPECIALLY Janeane Garafalo. She's just spouting a bunch of liberal nonsense everytime I see her on TV. Everytime she goes on TV, she makes a bigger fool of herself, so let her go right ahead. Personally, I think everyone of them should get a one-way ticket to Iraq. Let THEM live under Saddam's regime if it's not so bad. Let THEM live with the threat of chemical warfare. Especially after Sept. 11, we need to be united. What happened to all the celebrities wanting to help out? Now all they want to do is tear America (especially President Bush) down.

To me, celebrities and the media seem to set the national mood and the perceived common consensus of the American people. I tend to watch what celebs with a little more than passing notice because if these men and women are the voices of America, then may God please rain down His mercies on America.

If I was an actor, I would think a movie celebrity would have something useful to say to me.
If I was a musician, I would think a music celebrity would have something useful to say to me.
If I was Secretary of Defense, I don't think a celebrity would have a thing to say to me that would bear any weight.
Lots of people hear celebrities, but that doesn't make the celebrity an expert on the subject.

They can spout all they want. If we let the KKK march down a street, the celebs can talk. Al Franken was made to look pretty stupid on Donahue, but now he gets his own talk show - go figure. If their box office appeal goes down, it's their own fault. People do make decisions based on personalities. M

Franken gets a radio talk show right? HAHA!! Put him opposite Rush and watch Franken fall like the Berlin Wall with Reagan shouting at it. When exactly is his time slot? Sean Hannity is on for a couple of hours as is O'Reilly. Just when does Franken and the left think people are going to listen?

Anyway, the only celebrities I want to hear are the ones I look up to and the ones who remain consistent. Charlton Heston, Ted Nugent and AH-NULD to name a few...Garofolo(sp) didn't protest Clinton in 1998 for bombing Iraq because "It wasn't hip". It's cool to be anti-Bush now and Hollywood is all over it. NOTE: If you're a celebrity and want ME to take you seriously, be CONSISTENT!!

I was kinda torn on what to vote for because, first of all, I definitely think they should leave their opinions out of their acceptance speechs, but I ended up voting for the third choice because they have a right to their opinion.  It just needs to be the same as the rest of us, and I think option 3 allows for me to also say I agree with option 1.

I am really annoyed with the celebrities.  I don't think I would be so annoyed if they would just simply say they are against it and why, but they take on the attitude that they are better and smarter than our politicians.  That's where they lose my respect for them.  I loved the Janeane Garafalo interview on FOX News when she kept asking why it mattered if she was a celebrity or not, and the guy said, "It does matter because it's the only reason you're even here."  I'm glad someone will stand up to them.

Hahaha, so true. Sounds like something from the O'Riley(sp?) Factor. I voted that last one because I am so sick of celebrities. Why are we so interested in the lives of these people, what great things have they done? A childhood of being forced to watch Entertainment Tonight has backfired on them I guess. :D

"Axis of Ignorance"....lol

The sad thing is people are influenced by Sheen and Garofolo more than Bush and Powell. You would think that the leader of the free world would garner a little more credibility than what these anti-war types have given him. I understand that Clinton made a joke out of the highest office in the world but Bush has done an outstanding job in bringing leadership and courage back to the White House. The thing about leaderdhip is that sometimes you have to go against the "popular" opinion. That's why it's called leadership. Reagan had countless people telling him he was going to start WWIII with his "Tear down this wall" tactics. He stood strong in the face of negative world opinion and look what happened. Communism, Russia and the Berlin wall all fell.

When the dust clears after this war, we are going to find the atrocities committed by Hussein. Where will these anti-war types be then? I'm glad they are on record but they'll most likely try to take credit for bringing the rest of the world along. The leftists have no shame...
