I would read K&D and Schaff's comments. Keil and Delitzsch is a commentary set. Schaff will give you historical reflection.

Josephus comments on the vision, as though all priests were trained to read it in the normal 490 year sense. See JEWISH WAR; websites can find you the locations faster than I can! He knew a really awful leader was coming who would ruin the country, although both he and Caiaphas (Jn 11, 12, 18) seemed to have believed that human intervention could change things. The person was the leader of the 'rebellion that desolates' back in Dan 8:13; that's how the expression 'abomination that desolates' got started. The rebellion of the 1st century was the abomination.

Also see the NIV Commentary series; usually good stuff. I don't know who they assigned to take Daniel.

Also seek the work of Pastor Peter Holford, England, 1805. He wrote to refute the antogonistic Thomas Paine. He showed the amazing coherence of the Bible especially about the destruction of Israel in Daniel's vision. There are threads here that have links and have discussed him and copied the main passages of his presentations. He rocked England and Paine was nearly banished for wholesale ridicule of the Christian faith.

There doesn't seem to be any agreement whatsoever in the nature and significance of Daniel's 70 weeks. Does anyone know how one could possibly get an unbiased handle on this subject at a grad school degree level?

http://www.nowtheendbegins.com/pages/rapture/daniels-70th-week-explained.htm

There's two prophecies about the Jewish people in the nation of Israel during the final 7 years: Daniel's 70th Week and the Time of Jacob's Trouble.

It's because during the first half of Daniel's 70th week, Israel is at peace after the agreement made with the antichrist. But at the second half, Israel is invaded and they too will endure the tribulation with the rest of the world.

*Daniel's 70th Week (Old Testament's terminology) = The Tribulation (New Testament's terminology) Both same and both for 7 years.

*Time of Jacob's Trouble (OT term) = The Great Tribulation (NT term) = Same thing, last 3 1/2 years during the second half of the tribulation.

The Final Week of the 70 Weeks
Of the 70 “sevens,” 69 have been fulfilled in history. This leaves one more “seven” yet to be fulfilled. Most scholars believe that we are now living in a huge gap between the 69th week and the 70th week. The prophetic clock has been paused, as it were. The final “seven” of Daniel is what we usually call the tribulation period.

Daniel’s prophecy reveals some of the actions of the Antichrist, the “ruler who will come.” Verse 27 says, “He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’” However, “in the middle of the ‘seven,’ . . . he will set up an abomination that causes desolation” in the temple. Jesus warned of this event inMatthew 24:15. After the Antichrist breaks the covenant with Israel, a time of “great tribulation” begins (Matthew 24:21, NKJV).

Daniel also predicts that the Antichrist will face judgment. He only rules “until the end that is decreed is poured out on him” (Daniel 9:27). God will only allow evil to go so far, and the judgment the Antichrist will face has already been planned out.

God is Number 1, and Joseph is Number 70, in the genealogy of Luke 3. It Takes 70 Angels for God to complete the Covenant by Appointing, Joseph in the Book of Revelation ... commonly referred to as the Antichrist.

I understand that this is not the question that you are asking exactly, therefore I will rephrase my response:

First Day of the 3 Days of Darkness
DANIEL 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof [shall be] with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

This is a Parable: "Two Angels are Slain with the Mark of the Beast 666", that is 666 and 2 or 62 Weeks, when the Two Witnesses are slain, this is the 62nd Angel Slain of Daniel 9:25. This is also the First Day of the "3 Days of Darkness".

Last Day of the 3 Days of Darkness
DANIEL 9:25 Know therefore and understand, [that] from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince [shall be] seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

The 62nd Angel is Slain when the "3 Days of Darkness" begins, the 69th Angel is slain when the "3 Days of Darkness" are finished. Then Joseph, which is "Messiah the Prince" is appointed, after the 69th Angel is Slain.

Joseph Reigning for 150 Days or until the 70th Angel is Slain
DANIEL 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Joseph represented by the Antichrist, reigns for 150 Days from the 69th Angel that is Slain to the 70th Angel that is slain, then the Gospel is Completed, the Earth and Universe are completely destroyed.
....................
....................
1260 Days before the 150 Days of Star Wormwood, an Angel is Slain, that would be the 61st Angel that is Slain, if we follow the language of the Gospel. TEN ANGELS TOTAL ARE SLAIN, which are the 10 Virgins of Matthew which mark the completion of revelation.

Maybe something of the archetypes of the Carl Jung persuasion, symbolism and dreams. Hypothetically, it's possible to discern a message from a dream by using the alphabet, which is numerical, though the methods would be sketchy and uncertain, lacking objectivity. Suppose the contents of a dream were known in a sequence that could be compared to what the letters represent as numerals and symbols, that could be interesting.

The interesting thing about the OP of course is that the scattering of agreement came in the past two centuries. Before that the usual understanding of the church was that the vision was a normal 490 years ending with the destruction of Israel, although at the Gospel events first, and then the destruction was the tail end of the "end."

The 490 Day Question

We have seen 490 years sling shot in the old testament, in different places, or that is what people like to claim, but wanted to view 490 days for a change.

EZEKIEL 40:1 In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth [day] of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me thither.

2/10/2014 to 6/16/2015 is about 490 Days. That is from the Lord that comes down, to the Mark of the Beast 616 or 6/16/2015. This Mark of the Beast, is involved in the "Healing of the Nations for a Month", then this ends on the "Seventeenth Day of the Seventh Month", which is 7/17/2015 when the Flood of Fire Star Wormwood comes, exactly has it has come in the Days of Noah on the same day, Gen. 8:4.

Ten Virgins of Genesis 5 (Spoken of in Matthew 25:1)
Adam = 61st Angel of Rev. 11:1-2
Seth = 62nd Angel of Daniel 9
Enos = 63rd Angel of Daniel 9
Cainan = 64th Angel of Daniel 9
Mahalaleel = 65th Angel of Daniel 9
Jared = 66th Angel of Daniel 9
Enoch = 67th Angel of Daniel 9
Methuselah = 68th Angel of Daniel 9
Lamech = 69th Angel of Daniel 9
Noah = 70th Angel of Daniel 9

2/10/2014 to 6/16/2015 is about 490 Days (Lord of Ezekial to Mark of Beast)
2/1/2012 to 7/15/2015 (1260 Days)

2/1/2012 to 7/15/2015 = 61st Angel Slain (1260 Days)
7/15/2015 to 7/17/2015 = 62nd Angel Slain to 69th Angel Slain (3 Days of Darkness)
7/17/2015 to 12/14/2015 = 70th Angel Slain (150 Days of Star Wormwood)

The 70 Angels of Daniel are not a Literal 490 Days or Years (they would be the entire length of the gospel's program), at best we can accurately count the last 10 Angels, 1260 Days + 3 Days of Darkness + 150 Days. (or 1260 Days + 150 Days, depending on context). But if we follow the gospel more closely, the 1260 Days appears to be separated from the 3 Days of Darkness, at least in this context.

Most of the 490 year, sling shot, arguments people have attributed to the Old Testament, really don't use any of the language of the gospel, do they?

The Abomination of Desolation from the Book of Daniel is revealed in a study of the two questions asked by the disciples and the two questions answered by Christ in the Olivet Discourse.

Matthew Chapter 24:

In Matthew chapter 24, Christ gives an explanation to four of His disciples.

Mat 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

Mat 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

1st Question: ________________________________________________

Christ has just told them the temple would be destroyed in the previous verse.

2nd Question: _______________________________________________

The Greek word “parousia” is used throughout the New Testament to describe His Second Coming.

………………………………...

Do New Testament and historical writings show that Jesus answered the first question within the first half of Matthew, chapter 24?

………………………………...

Mat 24:5For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Act 8:9But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:(Simon Magus was a deceiver. Confirmed by Jerome.)

………………………

Mat 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for allthese thingsmust come to pass, but the end is not yet.

During 66 AD the Roman 12th Legion under the command of Cestius Gallus surrounded the city of Jerusalem. For some unknown reason, he ordered his army to stop the seige. During the retreat the Romans were attacked by the Jews, who killed thousands of the Roman soldiers. (Josephus, War 2.19.7, 540) (Tacitus, The Histories V)

………………………

Mat 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

There was a devastating earthquake around 60-62 AD that destroyed much of Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis. This was recorded by Tacitus in his writings as being during the 7th year of Nero.

………………………..

Mat 24:8 All thesearethe beginning of sorrows.

Mat 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

The New Testament records the persecution of the early Christians, mainly by the Jews.

This is described specifically in Mark’s Gospel.

Mar 13:9 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

The Apostle Paul confirms that he fulfilled this persecution.

Act 22:19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagoguethem that believed on thee:

Act 22:20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

……………………….

Mat 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

Mat 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Col_4:14Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.

2Ti_4:10For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

1Jn_4:1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

……………………….

Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Was the Gospel preached into every nation in the modern world? No.

However, according to Paul it was preached into every nation of his known world.

Col 1:5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

Col 1:6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

Col 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, andwhich was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Luk 2:1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the worldshould be taxed.

Does this include Alaska and South America ???

………………………..

Mat 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Mat 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Mat 24:17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

Mat 24:18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

Mat 24:19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

Mat 24:20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

We know sometime before the final siege of 70 AD the early Christians left the city of Jerusalem. Did they heed the warning in Matthew 24?

A parallel study of the three Gospel accounts reveals the Abomination of Desolation.

During the time of Christ, the Jews celebrated Hanukka.

Joh 10:22 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.

He was well aware of the first occurrence of the Abomination of Desolation in the temple, when Antiochus Epiphanes set up a statue of Zeus (He had previously claimed he was Zeus) in the temple and had a pig slaughtered on the altar, during 167 BC.

Hanukkah celebrates the cleansing and rededication of the temple which occurred three years after the abomination of desolation by Antiochus in 167 BC.

Therefore, Christ was predicting a second occurrence of the Abomination of Desolation in the Olivet Discourse.

Several events could be a possible desecration of the temple during 70 AD. The Roman standards were posted at the temple site. Sacrifices were made to Titus at the temple site. Also, the behavior of the zealots within the temple itself during the siege is regarded by many as a desecration of the temple.

Mat 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand)
Mat 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Mar 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

Luk 21:20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh(near).
Luk 21:21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

Luke’s account above clearly states that the desolation would be near the time that Jerusalem was surrounded by armies. We know Luke 21:20 is related to Matthew 24:15, because the same warning to flee is found in the next verse.

We know the early Christians did flee from Jerusalem before the final siege.

While He was being taken to the Cross, Jesus warned the women who were weeping for him about what was to come. During this warning He makes a reference similar to that found in Matthew 24:19, about nursing mothers. This warning is also specifically made to these women and their children.

During the siege of 70 AD some women ate their own children, due to the lack of food during the siege.

Luk 23:28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

Luk 23:29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessedarethe barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

Almost all scholars agree that the following verse is a specific reference to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD.

Luk 21:24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

What do we find in the last half of Matthew chapter 24?

_________________________________________________________

Mat 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Mat 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summerisnigh:

Mat 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near,evenat the doors.

Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

Mat 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Mat 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

Mat 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Mat 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Mat 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Mat 24:40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Mat 24:41 Twowomen shall begrinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Based on the language and the context in verses 24:38-39, what happens to those taken in verses 24:40-41?

__________________________________________________________

Mat 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Mat 24:43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

Mat 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Its very intro in the Bible, God called the Tribulation > Jacobs Troubles . He did not call it Americas Troubles , The Churches Troubles or the Worlds Troubles but Jacobs Troubles! Enjoy

When Jeremiah wrote about Jacob's Trouble they were enduring tremendous trouble by being in captivity.
They did return to the land after the captivity, just as Jeremiah predicted.

He also predicted the New Covenant.

Jer_30:7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
..................................................................................

Heb_8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Heb_8:7
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

Heb_8:8
For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Heb_8:9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

Heb_8:10
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

Heb_8:13
In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Heb_9:1 Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.

Heb_9:4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

Heb_10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

Heb_10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

Heb_12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

Heb_13:20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

This is all still future, during the tribulation. Jeremiah wasn't prophesying the Babylonian captivity of around 605 BC.

Plus Israel is not under the new covenant, they are still under the law. Israel will be under the new covenant --- which is grace --- when Christ returns.

Jeremiah 31:36 “The descendants of Israel will never stop being a nation. That would happen only if I lost control of the sun, moon, stars, and sea.”

Jeremiah 31:40 The whole valley where dead bodies and ashes are thrown and all the terraces down to the bottom of Kidron Valley all the way to the corner of Horse Gate will be holy to the Lord. The city of Jerusalem will never again be torn down or destroyed.”

The Babylonian captivity of 605 BC is in the book of Ezra.

Ezra 2:1 Now these are the people of the province who came back from the captivity, of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away to Babylon, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, everyone to his own city.

Ezra is history. Jeremiah is prophecy.

Jer 1:1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:

Jer 1:2 To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

Jer 1:3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.

And we find from Jeremiah 1:4-10, Jeremiah was born, then later called to be a prophet.

How can the Babylonian captivity Jeremiah wrote be a prophecy about 605 BC when that happened before his time? He finished writing the book around 580 BC, long after they were taken captive.

How can a prophecy written in 580 BC be about an event that happened in 605 BC?

Jeremiah 1:4-10 (NKJV)
The Prophet Is Called
4 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
Before you were born I sanctified you;
I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
Before you were born I sanctified you;
I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

6 Then said I:

“Ah, Lord God!
Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”

7 But the Lord said to me:

“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
For you shall go to all to whom I send you,
And whatever I command you, you shall speak.
8 Do not be afraid of their faces,
For I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord.

9 Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me:

“Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.
10 See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms,
To root out and to pull down,
To destroy and to throw down,
To build and to plant.”

2 Chronicles 36:5-6 (NKJV)
5 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord his God. 6 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him, and bound him in bronze fetters to carry him off to Babylon.

2 Chronicles 36:9-10 (NKJV)
9 Jehoiachin was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten days. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord. 10 At the turn of the year King Nebuchadnezzar summoned him and took him to Babylon, with the costly articles from the house of the Lord, and made Zedekiah, Jehoiakim’s brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem.
2 Chronicles is History, Jeremiah is Prophecy.
