Proverbs 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

I couldn't find any case of God hating someone in the Bible, and the closest that I could come was this passage of the things that the Lord hates.

Hate the sin, love the sinner?
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

A simple definition of hate is; to destest.

I got 167 results when I searched for hate in the NKJV. Of them I picked out a few where God said He hated someone. Most of these verses show that He hates evil and those who practice it. He also loves those that hate evil. Here they are below:

Psalm 26:5
"I have hated the assembly of evildoers, And will not sit with the wicked."
Deuteronomy 12:31
Deuteronomy 16:22
Isaiah 61:8
Jeremiah 12:8
Hosea 9:15
Amos 5:21
Amos 6:8
Zechariah 8:17
Revelation 18:2
"Hate evil, love good; Establish justice in the gate. It may be that the LORD God of hosts Will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph." Amos 5:15

"He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly." Pro. 13:24

"Jacob I have loved and Esau I have hated..." Romans 9

What God commands us to do (love the sinner) is not the law that binds Him.
Why did God hate? Mal 1:3 quoted in Rom 9:13.

  • Mal 1:3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

Ro 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

...So I guess the answer is YES...at times God can hate...So the next question is...Is it a SIN for us to hate...if God does too...??

Is it ok to "hate" evil....ok to hate Satan who is our enemy..? Or should we try to convert Satan... and those who (like him)...are down right evil...?

(( and what does that say to those who always claim "God is Love"..))

  • I'll let God speak for Himself on that one: Rpmans 9:13-16
13As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”
14What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! 15For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” 16So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.

God is not bound by the law that binds us. We are His creation. We are commanded not to kill, God kills. We are commanded not to be jealous, God is a jealous God (saw that thread, too.). So, yes it is a sin for us to hate.

Hate satan? Never thought about it. We are told to love our enemy. Hate festers and causes sin. I pity satan. He was in glory and his pride cast him out. I don't hate him. Convert Satan? I don't see that happening. Convert those that are as evil as satan? We are commanded to do so. Ted Bundy was converted. God can even turn the heart of Charles Manson.

God is love. Love for His elect.

People focus on those that are going to hell and say, "Why has God condemned them?" They and we condemn ourselves through sin. God, in His grace, reaches out to some and gives them a heart of flesh, making them alive to see their sin and need for a Saviour. That is love.

Gabrial,
SO true, maybe!

hate only appears 16 times in the new teatament. and mainly speaks about belivers being hated. BUT

Mat 6:24 Luke 16:13 is interesting

Mat 6:24 Luke 16:13 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Is this telling us to hate right here?

How about here?

Luk 14:26 If any [man] come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

God's love is pro-active. If you read and consider the passages you describe in context you will glean from them the true meaning of the word "hate". It means to turn your back on, to value less. God should come first. We should seek first to serve Him. We should "hate" or turn our back on anything and anyone who hinders that action.

OK I agree ..so what do we do with "God so loved the world"...?

If he hates certain people and doesn't have mercy on everyone..and only gives salvation to some and not to others..?

....Are you saying that God....being God...has the devine right to choose those that he already knows ahead of time will FAITH him or not..?

...and He....unlike US.....doesn't have to wait for TIME to play itself out in order to know ahead of time..( since he knows all things already )..

Because HE stands outside of TIME...and because he knows all ..past ...present and future....He then knows ahead of time who WILL and WON'T ever faith him...But not because HE "predestined" it to be that way....but because....he doesn't have to wait for time..( like WE do )

....He already knows...what THEY will freely willfully decide and do.."ahead of time"...!

 Hey I can agree with that..!

Eph writes...

hmmm....Then why did he have to send his son to FULFILL the law he gave...? He could just say.."thats it..kill em all...I'll start again with a new batch"....

I say he IS bound by his law / word...and thats why Jesus had to come and fulfill the law...So He couldn't ever be looked at as saying one thing and doing another...!

WHY..?

Because God is a "man of his word"...When he makes a promise..he keeps it..God is not bound to the "physical" laws that are in place...that is true..but HIS moral law...yes..!

Gabriel writes...

Eph writes...

Well I hate SATAN..and all his buddies...God didn't provide a way of salvation for "fallen angels"...but he DID provide a way for fallen man..So God "showed favor" to us..and not them...!

Everything from scripture....in context is what I say...
