Is prophesy for today?

This has lately been stirring in my heart lately. There are some people that believe that since the latest of the Minor Prophets (i.e. or Daniel in some cases) in the Old Testament there has been no other prophet and that prophecy is no longer for this day, or is otherwise considered a false prophet. Contrarily, there are those whom believe the opposite view, that Jesus Christ was a prophet and that any can have the gift of prophecy for whom God gives the gift. Some believe there are prophetic schools one can go to harness this gift. Believe me, I've observed them online!

I would love to hear from those whom experienced being giving a gift of prophesy if they had experience with using that gift for others and how the gift impacted your life. Perhaps to you, did it feel like a curse (e.g. revealing the death of a loved one, or break up of a relationship, etc.)?

Additionally, is it a calling and something worth investing one's time? And does it relate to other gifts that you used in conjunction (e.g. spiritual sight)?

If you believe it is not for today, what passages relate to this that you believe in your heart is true (i.e. and even scriptures that support for those that do believe prophecy is for today).

The prophecies written in the bible are still relevant.
They all point to Jesus.

I dont know what other kind of prophecy there is..sometimes what people mean by prophecy is more like fortune telling which is forbidden by God. So beware any wolves who try and tell you something different or flattering you with words not from Gods word.

There is a fine line between prophecy and "still small voice."

When the books of the Bible were written, there was no clear defining line for "the end" of writings, or prophecy, or God's involvement. It was humans that gathered the books into one, and declared it canonized. I am not saying the Bible is not God's Word, that shouldn't be changed; but that God never said it was the end.

One could argue that Jesus' resurrection and ascension was the end, but Jesus Christ was the one who promised, [Now I will send the Holy Spirit...] -- meaning it certainly wasn't over. The writings after that time in the Acts and epistles, reflect God's powerful movement among people, through them, toward them, from them.

Some intriguing instances in the Old Testament, show that it wasn't just a few select, oil-anointed prophets:

Numbers 11:25
Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied.

But two men had remained in the camp; the name of one was Eldad and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them (now they were among those who had been registered, but had not gone out to the tent), and they prophesied in the camp.

So a young man ran and told Moses and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp."

1 Samuel 10:5

Afterward you will come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is; and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and a lyre before them, and they will be prophesying.

Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you mightily, and you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man.

...When they came to the hill there, behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him mightily, so that he prophesied among them.

It came about, when all who knew him previously saw that he prophesied now with the prophets, that the people said to one another, "What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?"

If prophesy didn't have a stopping point across the hundreds of years covering the Old Testament, it would make no sense to stop after Jesus arrived.

Read Hebrews 1:1

We now can all can prophesy as we have the books of the bible to prophesy from. When Jesus was reading from Isaiah he was prophesying. But God had pointed those special prophets for Israel for a reason. To point toward Jesus. Nowadays there are no more prophets as such because Jesus has come, and fulfilled all that the prophets had said. However his work continues on with us ...which is to preach the gospel and teach and also point to his return, as that is still future.

When people self proclaim they are prophets, beware, cos muhammed did just the same, claiming he heard from God. Many others claiming they chrsitians turned out to be false, and also many seem to practise a kind of divination, which is not ok with God. we are warned about this in scripture itself, of false prophets. They will lead ppl astray.
Stick to the true ones, and they are the ones whos books are in the Bible. A prophet is a mouthpiece for God and must be 100% accurate.

So called prophetic schools charge a lot of money to give you this 'gift'!!! I would avoid them they seem to attract the spiritually arrogant. It is new age stuff. Also it does seem like people make it up and then claim it is prophecy.

jesus did not go round teaching his disciples to be prophets. They already knew him as the Messiah. If we are to prophesy what we can do is just proclaim the gospel and do what John the baptist did, prepare the way for Jesus.

In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit would come upon the prophet and the Lord would speak His message through him. In the New Testament we Christians all have the Holy Spirit and God can just speak to us each as He desires. There is no longer a "need" for God to send a prophet to a church with a message from God since the people themselves could hear it from God if He had something to say.

The gift of prophecy in the New Testament Church is more like an enlightened teacher, one who can teach the word of God with such understanding that everyone that hears it will learn from it.

The Holy Spirit gives His gifts to people as needed (as He sees fit). You can't get a spiritual gift from a school
nor can you get a prophetic 'anointing' by letting a prophet lay his hands on you.

Be Blessed,

Alan

Yes, it's for today. Believers need it ""But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort." I Cor 14:3

I Cor 12 - talks about spiritual gifts and manifestations of those gifts including:
"And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues." v 28

Paul reminded Timothy of his personal prophecies "This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare." I Tim 1:18

All spiritual gits/manifestations have a learning curve not that we ever learn everything. Afterall, the original disciples were trained for 3 years (not saying it will take 3 years though)..

"Despise not prophesyings." "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." I Thess 5:20-21.

We prove all things by - Foremost we have The Holy Spirit and Holy Scripture (prophesy lines up with Scripture), hearing God’s voice, spiritual discernment, and confirmation (Acts 9;9-19 especially v 10-12; II Cor 13:1).

There are no longer any prophets which we must accept. I believe God has spoken to many Saints but it would not be necessary for me to hold this belief. There have been many false prophets who came after Jesus so we shouldn't simply accept anybody at their word.

If something they say obviously contradicts the Bible then we know they are a false prophet. If they say something that doesn't contradict the Bible then we should use our own discretion. We should take a skeptical approach and we shouldn't readily accept whatever somebody says. Many Saints have performed miracles through the power of God so if God wants us to accept something then he will give us proof to convince us.
