LBAM,
is it true that you support Al-Nusra?
If yes, why do you support them?

First of all, feel free to go through my posts see where I've "outed" myself as an al-Qa'idah supporter. I haven't. I just haven't been, "OH NO, JN WAS VICTORIOUS. THE SKY IS FALLING. ASSAD COME BACK."

I don't hate JN, I don't love them. I leave judgement up to the Syrian people themselves because they're the ones there on the ground and from the looks of it, they either support JN or, at the very least, tolerate them because they prefer them over Assad.

I think people are mainly just making JN guilty by association instead of looking at their consistent actions.

One of the more balanced posts I've seen on this thread was Supreme's.

That's the real value this thread. Without realising it, LBAM does illustrate just how awful the situation is for the Syrian people. Because there is nobody to cheer. No hope for Syrians to not live under brutal oppression and bigotry.

Yet they're still cheering whenever the rebels come and free their towns from the grips of Assad's forces even though they know that means Assad will retaliate with attacks (chemical weapons and barrel bombs). I think they would know more about the reality they face than people in the West who just see a certain name and assume it must be terrible for them.

Many Syrians were livid by the US targeting of JN in its campaign against ISIS. That should tell you something.

Darn. WSJ has made this a subscription only article (it wasn't before):

Rebels captured the al-Qarmeed army base last Monday:

"BEIRUT—Rebels in Syria said they had seized a military base in the northwest, the latest victory for a coalition of antiregime forces moving closer to President Bashar al-Assad’s strongholds.

The capture of al-Qarmeed base on Monday comes two days after rebel factions—including American-backed fighters, Islamist groups and al Qaeda’s Syrian arm—loosely coordinated to seize the strategic town of Jisr al-Shoghour. Both are in Idlib..."

Syrian Opposition Forces Seize Military Base - WSJ

"This was one of the major bases of the regime in Idlib and had lot of weapons," said Observatory head Rami Abdul Rahman, adding at least seven tanks, large ammunition caches and scores of rocket launchers were seized by the rebels.

"The happiest news I've heard in awhile. The regime has been hitting Idlib with chemical weapons for the past week and now the city is under rebel control (and I pray it remains that way). "

From your own two posts in this thread:

"lol, ain't nothin' gonna put a damper on this news today. As long as it's not Assad or his allies, ISIS, or warlord thugs in control, yesterday/today felt like 'Eid came early. I'm so ecstatic that this city is finally out of Assad's hands.

Anyway, I guess these residents of Idlib came running to their liberators to embrace them and cry (or laugh joyfully) because they're going to really miss those chemical weapons Assad was unleashing on them."

You're calling Al-Qaeda branches "liberators".
By that reasoning, Nazis were "liberating" Poland and France.
The reason these individuals are cheering is because they're either going to get shot if they don't, or they actually enjoy the fact that an Islamic terror organization is going to kill what they consider to be "infidels".

After all, was it not Jabbhat Al-Nusra who attacked a UN Peacekeeping mission? Why did they do this, if they are such "honorable liberators"?

I think people are mainly just making JN guilty by association instead of looking at their consistent actions.

Their consistent actions include attacks on UN peacekeeping missions including a hostage crisis, and go on further to include the kidnapping of Christian nuns.
They didn't have to announce their loyalty to Al-Qaeda for people to know what's wrong with them.

Then again, LBAM, you don't care at all about the "people" of Syria, because you only consider the Sunnis to be "people".
You don't care about the Christians, Jews, Shia or Alawites - and it's people like you and your kind of thinking that enabled the most heinous crimes ever witnessed to mankind.

Many Syrians were livid by the US targeting of JN in its campaign against ISIS. That should tell you something.

Those "many Syrians" (=Sunnis) also cheered when ISIS gained control of Raqqa.
Then again, what can you expect from a religion that cheers on a pedophile warlord.

If someone wants to insult my Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), get out of my thread. And maybe read the forum rules because last I checked, they don't apply to just me.
Are Alawites allowed to pay Jizya when the Islamist rebels take over Idlib?

You know, there's an old Arabic proverb I love. It goes, "The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on."

Al-Jazeera correspondent overcome with emotions as he embraces his family in newly liberated Idlib City (from last month but still heart-warming):

I've been meaning to post this for awhile (was originally published in mid-April). It's about Jaysh al-Fath (the rebel coalition that secured the victory in Idlib City) and how it is handling the city:

"As for administration, according to the Sheikh Abu Jaber, leader of Ahrar a-Sham: “Our goal is not to administer the city, for the city will be handed over to civilian rule.” Our goal is to protect the citizens, even from the warplanes despite a lack of anti-aircraft guns. The rebel brigades especially need to remain in the city, out of fear that the regime will try to take it back.

I want to emphasize once more that the rebel brigades will not undertake to administer the city. Rather, the administration will be run by civilians: that was what the Victory Army's operations room agreed upon."

Amnesty have just released a detailed report on human rights abuses in Aleppo.

Most of the report focuses on crimes committed by the Assad regime, but they also report on a large number of war crimes and other abuses perpetrated by various rebel groups, including indiscriminate mortar attacks on residential areas, kidnappings and torture.

There really are no good guys to cheer.

The report is available on Amnesty's site. Be prepared for heartbreaking accounts and sickening images:

Pictures of people cheering the liberation of their city by rebels following a brutal war - where have I seen that before....

Hopefully the experience for Syrians won't end up as bad as that for the Cambodians cheering on the Khmer Rouge in these pictures, but I won't be holding my breath

1.) Which various rebel groups is this report talking about; are they all discredited because of the actions of some? Furthermore, of the groups guilty, was it their official policy of the group to which they belong to do this or was it rogue elements that were going against the group's doctrine?

2.) When the government perpetrates about 95% of the atrocities against non-combatants and the opposition largely targets (and kills) regime soldiers and their allies, it is pretty clear who to cheer for.

3.) Do you think that there really were no good guys to cheer for in South Africa because some in Nelson Mandela's group killed at least 100 civilians and wounded many others? Some of the places targeted with bombs were a shopping center, a bank, a rugby stadium, a bar on a beach-front, a fast food place, and a supermarket.

And that was just one group. The rebels are not one group with one leadership. They're comprised of many different groups that have different leaders.

Or take those who were often the victims of the Nazis. After the Nazis for defeated, some atrocities were carried out against Germans. For example:

"Mr. Morel, who is Jewish, lost both parents and his two brothers during the war. Witnesses at the camp he commanded after the war have charged that he had hundreds of German civilians tortured and beaten to death, and killed some himself."

Do his actions suddenly mean that there was no one to really cheer for in the fight against the Nazis?

This post isn't about a place in Syria being liberated from the regime, but it's still happy news.

On twitter, Gissur Simonarson posted this picture of a Syrian-Palestinian refugee (from the besieged Yarmouk Camp in Syria) in Beirut selling pens as he holds his daughter:

CNRYIKZXAAEjDIQ.jpg

After seeing this picture, people inquired as to how they could help this man. This became such a popular request that they began a serious search for this family. Eventually, this man was located, a fundraiser started, and donations have been pouring in since. The initial goal was $5,000 which was met in 30 minutes. Since then (i.e. yesterday), this figure has gone up to $72,038 and it's still climbing as I type. To read how this all transpired, click here.

Sometimes humanity can be really depressing. But sometimes it does things like this that can slightly warm even the coldest of hearts.

If you are interested in donating or sharing with others who might be interested, please click here: Help Abdul and Reem start a new life. You can follow the updates on the first link I gave (the hyperlinked twitter) as well as this one.

Assad is a monster, but ISIS isn't any better. It's just a change in evil.

So, they exchanged chemical weapons for beheadings, sexual slavery, and an evil form of sharia law that just harms in different ways.

I pray those poor people are able to find some sense of normal so they can have the life they deserve, and the terrorists and the evil leaders of the country get their just deserts.
Kinda like when the Soviets liberated Warsaw in WWII?

"I want to use the money to help Syrians. I don't want to be the only one being helped; there are thousands of children on the streets. There are people who are worse off than I am," he said passionately. "Syria is my country; these are my people. In Syria, we used to welcome everyone and help them.

"I am lucky because at least I have a roof over my head and somewhere to sleep," he added. "There are many who are barely living. I hope this campaign grows to help all Syrians. I hope other Syrians get a campaign the way I got a campaign, and people can see the conditions they are in."

It went up to about $188,400. :)

The rebels captured Abu az-Zuhur military airport on 9/9/15!

Obai Shahbandar, a defence analyst, told Al Jazeera that the loss of the base was a blow to the Syrian government. ....."This was certainly a military and political embarrassment for Bashar al-Assad," Shahbandar said.

...the group had taken advantage of an ongoing sandstorm in the region to advance on the base. "The regime couldn't shell around the area because their planes could not shell accurately and they couldn't see," the source said.

Another source:

The rebels now control almost the entire province, which borders Turkey, with the Syrian army completely driven out, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The rebels' success at the Abu al-Duhur airbase, though, was a coalition effort organized under a unifying mission called "Army of Conquest," funded with a new receipt of cash and weapons from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar.

A bit about the airport (article from late July) that has been besieged by the rebels for the past 2 years:

In the countryside of Idleb, the regime still holds Abu az-Zuhur military airport – the only airport in the province still in regime's hands. The airport is located in the desert between the southeast of Maraat an-Numan and the east of the city of Saraqeb in the countryside of Idleb.

Regime forces previously used the airport in former military operations to bomb areas in the countryside of Idleb...

Opposition forces managed to enter the airport in May 2013, disabling the movement of warplanes after destroying the runway. "The disabled airport now receives supplies via helicopters", confirmed opposition military sources.

Other rebels also liberated the village of Markabah in northern Hama on the same day.

This post has to do with Syrian refugees arriving in Canada (a country showing the world how it's done).

Click here if you can't see video below

Justin Trudeau seems like a great man and a great leader for Canada. He tells a refugee family he received at the airport, "You're home." :') (Click here):

And here he tells another family something similar as they express their gratitude, "You are home. Welcome home."

Well done, Canada. I'm genuinely impressed by your hospitality.

Muslimah, what are these groups fighting FOR, exactly?

For the removal of the regime that has persecuted the Sunnis (ie the majority of Syrians) for decades while themselves being a minority.

What are their plans?

To remove the regime that has killed 200,000 civilians in nearly 5 years.

What elements will comprise a government formed by these rebels?

I don't know?
