The commandment is: "Thou shalt not bare false witness against your neighbour." I think what we know as lying is a little bit different.
Ditto.

If a stranger came up to you in a dark alley and said, "How much cash do you have," you might walk away instead of answering.

Or if a friend said, "You have two bikes, can you give me one?"

If you're in a social group with ten unemployed people, and they ask you about your job, you wouldn't offer information that would make them feel miserable or alienated. "Great, I just got a raise that put me up to 200 k, and I'm going on a business trip to the Bahamas." (Not my case btw.)

We have a relative with Alzheimer's, and find ourselves lying to prevent her from suffering grief over and over. "Where's my husband?" is not answered by "He died several years ago," but "He's not here right now."
If they ask, "Is he down parking the car?" We would tend to answer yes, because she will ask the same question again anyway, and a different answer will seem completely natural.

Context, purpose, end results, wisdom... I think it is more about intents of the heart. There would be no spies if spies were always revealing the truth. And if being too open about truth, people can get hurt and lose ambition, hope.

Bearing false witness puts blame on the wrong person. Justice is not upheld.

I'm not saying that lying is approved, but there are times we need to open-not-our-mouths.

Thank you for the clarification.

Although bearing false witness is maybe the incorrect verse, I think this may be more appropriate:

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Can God bless what He has cursed? I don't know. But I can tell you if someone was knocking at my door looking to murder my children, I would 100% lie unless God provided a different way out. For instance I remember once someone was smuggling bibles into China. They asked them to take off their jacket, and the person, so afraid, crawled onto the conveyor belt to go into the tiny scanner. The guards were laughing so hard, they let them through.

John 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

The context of this verse is not that "Because you told a lie, that makes you just like your father the Devil..."

No, Jesus was talking to honest, religious leaders who wanted to murder him for being the Son of God.

Did Rahab sin by lying? YES

Did God really bless her, how can He, she is such a liar? (the real question)?
How could she possibly be called a hero of the faith.. she lied?

But I thank God that His ways and thoughts are higher than ours.. He extends mercy when we choose judgement.

He searches and judges the motives and intents of the heart.
