Did Rahab sin by telling a lie?

So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.”

But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from.

At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.” (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.)

Rahab was not given the law, it was not written on her heart. Did she lie? If course she did. But you will also note the protection came from the promise she made with the spies. She did what she felt she had to. Was she a good person for it? Nope, unless you also want to say that God blessed her because she was a prostitute therefore that's also okay.

Hi guys, long time no see. :D

So, the commandment is: "Thou shalt not bare false witness against your neighbour." I think what we know as lying is a little bit different.

I grew up as a missionary kid, and learned not to lie from a very young age. I found though, that this is no way to live! That there are many places in life where we need to "lie", but the religion of Christianity prohibits it.

I've seen my dad (the former missionary) fail miserably in business because he felt he always needed to tell the truth. He would tell his opponent exactly what he intended to do next, and (of course), then they would be prepared and stop him from success.

Think about it. Could any country survive if they always told the truth to their enemies? Subterfuge is one of the main elements to the art of war. And despite what some Christians might think, lying is a nicer way to treat your enemy than killing them in battle.

Biblical condemnations against lying must be considered in context with the other times when lying was ok. Rahab lied, and was rewarded by God for doing so. Samuel was told by God to lie to Saul about what he was doing when he anointed David to be the next king. And when God asked the angels how to deal with one of the kings, some volunteered to tell lies to the false prophets to accomplish the will of the Lord.

So in principle, most of the time lying is bad. But there is a time and place for everything under the sun. IMO

She was never given that commandment. It was given in the wilderness, to Israel.

Totally unrelated, since we're in Joshua, ever wonder if punctuation changes the meaning of a verse:

13 Once when Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing before him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you one of us, or one of our adversaries?”

Or:

13 Once when Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing before him. With a drawn sword in his hand, Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you one of us, or one of our adversaries?”

Ya, I know, not related at all...

Hi Svt4hm:wave:

Another example:

When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

Or:

When the enemy shall come in, like a flood the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

:)

Yes.:) her job made her do it.

I don't think too many women back in those days had much of a choice about that. Either they were told that they were to marry some random guy that their dad knew, or they were forced into being a prostitute. (Would God hold that against her?)

Ester was forced into having a one-night stand with the king, and then doomed into being in his harem for the rest of her life. Not exactly God's plan for the ideal marriage, right? She made the best of the situation, and by faith considered the possibility that God had His hand in things, instead of blaming everything on Satan like many Christians do today. As it turns out, God was able to use a woman of faith in the position of Queen.

Question: If you were hiding Jews in your basement, and the Nazis came knocking on your door asking if you've seen any lately, what would you do?

Lie, and save their lives. Or tell the truth, and condemn them to death?

lie my brains out!

Abraham seems to have fibbed, and so did his son about their wives, some say he did not though.

Could you give me a site for this, as I find it to be untrue.

Again totally missed this part, is it in Ester 2:15-17?

Or if you had an ingrown toenail, and it would be covered under your medical if you said it happened during sports, but it didn't, would you lie to make sure you could buy your family dinner, knowing that a man who can't take care of his family is worse than a heathen?

What to do?

Tell the officials of Jericho that the Jewish spies were hiding in her house.. and forfeit their promise to her to preserve her life as she asked when the entire army of Jews come to defeat those in Jericho backed by God Almighty who victoriously won over the Pharaoh of Egypt.

She took a side, she had to be loyal to one, which meant that she would not reveal the hidden men who risked their lives to her.

During the Hitler campaign many Christians took the side of the Jews in protecting them under similar situations. If you bless Israel, you'll be blessed.
