• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have been gone from CF since last summer. I so need some support. I am struggling with waiting for a new antidepressant. I changed mental health centers and will be seeing a new doctor hopefully in Feb. I have struggled with the old doctor refusing to prescribe me an antidepressant after a few other antidepressants didn't work for me. I feel like she just gave up on me. Today my mood is better but I have days when I get real low and just need to get some support here. Tell me what you all do when you get real low so I can incorporate it into my life. I talk to Jesus about lots of things and know he loves me as well as all of you.

Being off of antidepressants can be hard. Do you know what thoughts or circumstances are causing your depression?
A real big part of it is that my brother was recently diagnosed with MS and I feel so helpless. He has gone on a medication for it but I worry about the long term of it, what will happen to him from the disease. I'm trying to take it One Day at a Time but I tend to worry. I have had an illness, too, and don't know if it's come out of remission. I'm going to see the doctor for another test. One test showed it might be back. I am also lonely.

Have you explored taking more natural antidepressants? I have taken St John's Wort and 5-HTP in the past while getting off SSRi's. A book called The MOOD CURE is very good for navigating the world of more natural treatments of depression-anxiety, but don't take my word for it.
I also find that epsom salt baths very relaxing and anti-depressing. When I feel really low, but not anxious, I enjoy showers that alternate hot/then cold every 10-30 seconds.

Thank you for those ideas. I've never tried St. John's Wort or 5 HTP. I'm wondering how much they cost because I don't have much to spend on a fixed income. Epsom salts sound real good to destress in and relax, I like taking baths. The mood cure sounds like a good book. Thanks so much for your advice!

That's sad about your brother and your loneliness. Is it possible you could live with your brother to cure your loneliness, and to help your brother with the MS?
We live almost 3000 miles apart and I'm sure he would not want me with him. He has tons of friends he'd probably rather be with. We are not close but that doesn't stop me from loving him, caring and worrying. He is able to care for himself right now, too.

Hi Ruth good to see you back here again, though I'm sorry to hear you are still struggling with depressive spells.

I find listening to good Christian music one of the best things for me. I realised a long time ago that depression lies to my heart and mind and that staying in God's awesome truth helped me heaps when it comes to depression.

It's great to have you back Ruth - we missed you!
I'm sorry you're feeling so low - praying that the new doc will be able to help.
I find that supporting and praying for others helps to take my mind off my own depression - and I know that you are very good at that ! Feel free to PM me any time - it may take a while to get back because of the time difference, but I'm here if you need me

So, I got an appointment with the doctor at the new mental health center I have transferred to. It's for next week Tuesday. Now I am kind of nervous about the assessment process I will probably go through. But I'm glad to have gotten the appointment so soon. I think my new doctor may be the son of a doctor I saw many many years ago.

Hi Ruth. Just wanted to say we are praying for you and your brother. In reference to the meds, keep trying till you find one that works for you. I had to take dozens and it took a few years before finding the right mix. I was on 7 different pysch meds at once, and by Gods grace I am now only on two and neither are benzos. I take Gabapentin and Cymbalta. I just recently wrote an article regarding this issue of taking meds, especially as being a Christian with the delimna of meds and faith. Check it out, Im sure it will bless you. imikecastillo.com

Thank you Mike for your message and prayer. My brother has started a treatment and is doing okay so far. I hope this treatment keeps him well. I have tried many psyche meds over the years and some quit working for me. The last one that quit working was Effexor. Now I hope to get a new antidepressant. Maybe I should try Cymbalta. I've not tried that one yet. Thanks for the link. I will check it out.

I am on an insurance plan that only covers certain mental health facilities. I can change doctors if I don't like one. I am in OH. What is MBCT? Thanks for caring.

Ruth,

MBCT stands for Mindfulness Behavioral Congitive Therapy. God has used it tremendously in my life. It works really well, especially while someone is on the proper meds. It doesnt cost anything to practice it. Being a pastor, there are parts of the therapy that I ignore, but for the most part, I have been able to apply it every day for the last year of my life and it has been a HUGE blessing. I even added an amazon link to the book for people to be able to buy it and read it since most of my friends kept asking me which book it was. I guarantee you will be able to apply it for the rest of your life. I read the book and immediately God reminded me of the verse that says "God, who am I that you are mindfully of me, that you hear me, when I call". Check it out, let me know if you have any questions. You will have a new found level of love and appreciation for God and His beautiful creations.:wave::wave:
