Unfortunately, they scheduled the conference in Texas. No good deed goes unpunished.

"“I want for people to see that we are kind peaceful people,” explained conference attendee Page Spence. “We’re not here to fight, we’re not here to argue. We’re just here to show that we’re Americans too.”"

"Protesters, upset that a Muslim group was holding a conference at a Texas conference center owned by the local school district, showed up last night waving flags and signs telling attendees, “Go home and take Obama with you.”"

Honestly, moderate Muslims can't win, sometimes. If they keep their heads down, they're accused of tacitly supporting terrorism. If they stand up, and organize, and speak out against terrorism, they're told to leave the country.

I fully support the right of these protesters to protest. I just completely disagree with their intentions. The quotes make them sound like morons. Did they even understand the meeting was being held to condemn terrorism? That the Muslims in the school were speaking out against the despicable acts of violence being committed in the name of their religion?

Do they even understand that American is a broad national concept that includes people from all religions?

Indeed. Do they realize that they're protesting anti-terrorism?

Sounds like an event to train individuals on how to react when awful things like what happened in Paris. In this environment they need to be very careful with how that do that if history is any indication of these types of fears (with others groups) in the past.

Stand With The Prophet

Above is their description page, and I guess they have decided to ban a number of media outlets from their event. NOT sure that is such a great idea, because that will just fan the flames.

Thankfully, from what I have read from other outlets they aren't getting any credible threats of violence, etc.

I'm not so sure if this took place in other areas that they wouldn't get the same reaction. I'm not saying that is right, but people are really freaked out right now.

Actually Texas may have been picked quite carefully.

No problems no press.

So they need to pick a place with goobers, but not overly dangerous goobers. Oh and where the goobers are not in control so things get canceled.

Parts of urban Texas seem perfect.

Hmmm... Something I had not considered.

I like the way you think, Keith!

Apparently not.

what none of you have mentioned is that their keynote speaker was an unidicted co-conspirator in the 93 WTC bombing, has gone on record promoting sharia in america, calling for the fall of the constitution, justifying stoning and other barbaric practices and calling the fbi the real terrorists.

if this is moderate islam, then there are no moderate muslims. this guy isnt any different that the animals in isis except he doesnt have the courage to act on his evil convictions.

So now, instead of just speaking out about it, go out into the community and turn in the extremists and discredit the radical imams. Show the world that the Islam of the radicals is not the Islam of moderate Muslims. That is what it will take to change the world view of Islam and Muslims in general.

Well...that and a new holy book I suppose.

Their book is their biggest enemy if their goal is to show that they're not interested in violent approaches.

It's kind of hard to denounce violence when the faith is centered around a book that promotes it.

...but to the Texas bashers in the thread, it seems that you're exhibiting the same behavior that the protestors were in that you're labeling an entire group based on the actions of a few.

Speaking as someone who's been to Texas on numerous occasions (and have friends and family there), it's not the monolith that people seem to spew on about.

"A bunch of gun toting, government hating, racist, sexist, homophobic, die hard conservatives" doesn't hold water when you actually look at some data.

> 40% vote democrat (42% voted for Obama)
contrary to popular belief, Texas is only 29th in gun ownership rates
Texas has numerous females in elected positions, and some major cities in Texas have large gay communities (and last I checked, they're not being assaulted on a daily basis)

In terms of each of the negative attributes described above, there are states that are much worse, yet anytime there's a conversation about any of those things, people seem to jump at the chance to paint Texas out to be like the deep south in the 1950's.

Yes, if they had a non-satanic book to live by, that would be ideal. But, having to deal with the reality of things, I think the best we can hope for is for moderates to emerge as the leaders of the "faith." But, we all know that is not going to happen. I'm not Texan bashing either. I agree with you on that issue.
