I definitely think that from the biblical standpoint, when we do give to others, we shouldn't expect anything in return. A gift is something that you give, freely. If you expect something in return after you give something to someone, or want it back, that would not be a gift.
It brings this verse to mind: Matthew 10:8 "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."
When it comes to giving to people though, I think that it is important to discern when you would be enabling someone in their sin, or when you would be doing good. I have learned that giving to others oftentimes will draw in people who just want a free handout and they will use you and try putting you in bondage, even with things outside of possessions, such as helping out someone with their work, since some begin to expect that you cater to their whims on a continuous basis after you give to them or help them a few times.
The key is that in everything we do, it should be done in the cause of what is good and right. If we help someone to continue on in their sin, that is not right. If we help someone in their time of need, that is right. So discernment is the biggest thing, and we are to be kind to our enemies and do good to those who hate us, but this never means that we should enable someone in their sin.
Proverbs 22:16 "He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want."
Proverbs 25:21 "If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:"
Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."
