Ok, so I need you guys' opinions... I listen to metal-like Christian bands... (I.e. The Chariot, The Devil Wears Prada, For Today, and Decypher Down...) so is this considered secular music? And is it sinful because of the screaming in the music? I just need a little advice and guidance... Because before I became a Christian, I used to listen to screamo, and heavy metal... And when I became a Christian, this was my alternative so the change wasn't so bad for me and I could listen to my favorite genre without hearing the cuss words and blasphemy about God.. So please help!!!

There's a similar thread over on the Christian music threads you might want to check out. There's lots of videos that folks have posted by various groups which you may be interested in. Let us know what you think, and don't be scared off by the guy who's totally sure that all screaming is a violation to God (it won't be hard for you to figure out who it is). We've found it best to just ignore him. Sorry I'm not savvy enough to post a link. Afraid I'm way too old to master that stuff. Good luck.

Aquadoodle: Look up the lyrics. Read the lyrics, without the music. Do the lyrics honour God--or praise what is good? That should be your musical plumbline.

Good idea :) I'll try, but it will take a long time lol but I will try it :)

Music is a form of expression to me. If there is a tonne of swearing in the song then that was that artist expressing themselves. It shouldn't affect you and your relationship with God.

I'm not trying to go against anything that you or Von are saying, I'm just giving you my opinion on the matter.

You will hear and like songs in the charts that are by non-Christians that may have a meaning that goes against your faith or beliefs, but you should be comfortable enjoying the music whilst knowing the music is enjoyable.

Just the same as there is a load of Christian bands whose styles don't interest me, I can still appreciate what they are doing for God. On the flip side, there may be a load of bands who sing against God, I can still appreciate their musicianship if the music is enjoyable.

My taste in music is eclectic but I love a lot of heavy metal & metalcore etc and went through the same turmoil as you when I became a Christian. I sat down and thought to myself for a while and what I came up with was what I said above.

If you enjoy the music, great, keep on enjoying the music. Headbang, go wild, a bunch of my friends are Christians and still throw the horns at concerts. They are comfortable with their faith and they feel that God is comfortable with them.

He knows you aren't going anywhere now so enjoy your music. It is one of the few ways you can express yourself in the modern day without causing too much of a stir.

Thats a positive way to look at this :) I think that's a great way to define certain secular musicians who either have a lot of cussing or are against God... They are just expressing their right to free will, and freedom of speech... That's a new way to look at this. Very optimistic :D ;) :)

I think it's more of how you think the music affects you. I know that a while ago I stopped listening to the cursing drug/sex related music, and after a while I actually started acting differently and thinking differently. Obviously listening to that music does not make you a bad person, but the feelings and words get caught in your mind. If you stop listening to people cursing, you might find yourself cursing less as a result because you aren't surrounded by it. The same thing goes for any topic they might be singing about.

Just what happened for me though. It's not an exact science. I still love all types of music, and listen to all stations on occasion, I just have found once I started getting caught up in the Christian rock/rap/alternative rock scene, I didn't miss the other stuff much. So I figure if I don't miss it, why risk infecting my mind with it. I'm sure you already listen to a ton of Christian bands, but i suggest Thousand Foot Krutch, We as Human, and The Letter Black. And if you're into screamo, Love and Death are awesome. The lead singer of Love and Death used to play guitar in Korn. fun fact :)

But secular vs. christian music does not mean the music genre (rap/rock/screamo/heavy metal..etc.) it refers only to the content. So it doesn't matter if the guy is screaming or singing or rapping, it really only matters what he is screaming/singing/rapping about. These hardcore rock, heavy metal, and alternative rock bands kept me close to God during some of my hardest days.
