Would you believe that one of the world's largest publishers, HarperCollins (it bought out Zondervan), has not included the nation of Israel in atlases sold to schools in the Middle East? Take a read of, 'Israel missing from HarperCollins atlases sold to Middle East schools'.

This seems to be political correctness in the extreme with one branch of HarperCollins responding: 'Collins Bartholomew, a subsidiary of HarperCollins that specialises in maps, told the Tablet that it would have been "unacceptable" to include Israel in atlases intended for the Middle East. They had deleted Israel to satisfy "local preferences"'.

You are not addressing the issue I raised.

There isn't much to address honestly.

Book company doesn't want to irk people over controversial land, so they don't show israel on map. Do Israeli maps for schools all show Palestine?

They're still a business. It doesn't matter what they publish. If being politically correct sells more books. They'll be politically correct. Simple business logic: whatever makes the most money will be done.

Even if it's incorrect?

I didn't say I agree with it, but this is how american businesses work typically. They promote enough company morality in their policies to sell themselves to people. Whether they actually possess such morals and it is just vapid showmanship is the question.

It doesn't surprise me but it's pathetic. Pandering is never a noble gesture. Not even local "customs" or "preferences". That numerous sources have cited this breach of common intelligence by a publisher merely to sell books based upon local pandering shows how pathetic businesses can be.

I get tired of this cowardice to appease local beliefs.

Just call it Israel-Palestine, as that would be the 2 people who live there...when they aren't trying to murder one another.

You don't half spout some nonsense. There is no sovereign nation of Palestine and please G-d there never will be.

Shame on HarperCollins. I will boycot their books.

Does that mean you will boycott every publisher who publishes something with which you disagree?

The tack I'm taking is that, (1) I try to be very discerning with the publications I purchase. (2) If I find in a publisher something with which I disagree, I'll let the publisher know and then advise my friends (and neighbours) what the publisher is doing.

I'm in the process of framing a letter to HarperCollins to complain about what it has done with this atlas of the Middle East. Here in Australia I can sent feedback to: feedback@harpercollins.com.au

I urge you to do this so that HarperCollins knows that we will not tolerate this pathetic publishing effort of censoring Israel right off the Middle East map.

Can't really blame them. Most Muslims in the Middle East dislike Israel and don't recognize them so if a book put them on a map they would probably throw the books away.

Disliking and not recognising a country do not erase it from the geography of any region. To throw the books away would be their choice, but obliterating Israel from a map of the region sure sounds like anti-semitism to me.

Yeah best answer is to change Middle East geography to better suit Islamic taste and sell more atlases....can't blame them really.

Did you read your entire article? They've already pulled the book.

I can't speak for Fox News because I don't watch Fox News. You'd need to provide me with examples to support your claim re Fox

Of course I've read the article. I know HarperCollins pulled the book from publication. However, HarperCollins still needs to hear from us of the disgust of leaving any country out of its atlas. I chose to make a statement of disgust and complaint to HarperCollins.

That may not be your choice, but it is mine.
