Metal snobs may not agree that all of these are "metal" but these are some of my favorite heavier acts:

Mastodon
Pantera
Tool
Lamb of God
Strapping Young Lad
Black Sabbath
Volbeat
Static-X
Testament
Megadeth
Metallica

:clap: Love most here esp Metallica. Volbeat is great live.

Honestly? Step 1 would be "check the lyrics". The music itself is just notes and rhythm; what's being said is the important part.
Yes, it's the lyrics that really count. I like Disciple's 'Battle Lines'; it has strong Biblical lyrics, although it's probably more strictly Christian hard rock than heavy metal.

Have you been into Christian metal for long?

I've been a huge fan of metal music for years. That lovely list compiled by Lenny3 shows you some of the bands that I am interested in.

I'm also a fan of the darker, heavier, more "evil" stuff as well. To me it was more about the volume and passion when it came to the heavier stuff, especially Black/Death/Doom Metal, where a lot of the lyrics are inaudible anyway.

I've always enjoyed having this conversation with people at church when they tell me that I shouldn't listen to rock, or metal, or just about anything if it isn't Classical or Chris Tomlin (nothing against either of them).

My main reply was a list of musicians who were, or at least claimed to be, Christian. Zakk Wylde from Black Label Society has mentioned his faith in the past. Dave Mustaine from Megadeth is very vocal, almost too vocal, about his faith. Those are my two main examples but you could probably look at any Southern Metal band and find at least one Christian in the lineup.

Ugh, I grew up with people telling me about the evils of rock, hard rock, and heavy metal. In my estimation, 99% of it comes from misunderstanding and, hence, fear. Very very very few metal bands are truly Satanic. Some bands to have what sounds like anti-Christian lyrics and an anti-religious outlook, but you really have to dig deep to get to the true meaning of a lot of these songs and a lot of songs can be interpreted in many different ways (which is the intent of most artists). Many of the themes that are taken as anti-Christian reflect the lead singers own struggles with faith and spirituality. Lastly, some artists are telling a story or trying to shock. It always surprises people when they learn that the lead singer of Slayer, Tom Araya, is a devout and practicing Roman Catholic. Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society is also a devout and practicing Catholic. He often attends Mass while on tour. Ozzy Osbourne and a few members of Black Sabbath are Anglicans. The list could go on and on.

In my estimation, if your faith is so weak and fragile that a heavy metal musician makes you outraged, then your faith is not strong to begin with.

You can throw Kristoffer Rygg from ulver in regard to being christian he came from a black metal background and then he found god and distanced himself and his music from the black metal scene.

Hi there, first post from this newbie...

I personally love symphonic metal (stuff like Nightwish, Therion, Leaves' Eyes, etc.) above all other genres. Also prog metal that appropriates some of the symphonic metal dynamics, like earlier Opeth.

For me, symphonic metal (at least in the quality of the sound, I don't pay much mind to the lyrics) is like the music of heaven. It's fantastically epic; and (at least to my tastes) it juxtaposes sonic ugliness and beauty in such a way that the inclusion of the ugliness actually enhances, rather than detracts from, the music's beauty. So in a way symphonic metal "redeems" the ugliness and abrasiveness of its death metal elements, bringing them into the fold of symphonic beauty and order and creating a finished product that I find infinitely more engaging and wonderful than any straightforward symphony.

It's the only musical genre I know of in which the song structures themselves function as a covert Christian allegory, which I think is awesome.

One of the vital elements for me, at least, when it comes to metal, is that I dig the combination of really melodic guitar lines and decent vocals, with a certain level of aggressiveness as well. One band that I think epitomizes this is Amorphis. Their current singer Tomi Joutsen is amazing. For what it's worth, I think they're one of the best bands out there right now.

For an idea of what I'm talking about, I'd have to mention the song "Towards and Against" off their Silent Waters release.

I don't like screamo, hardcore, or metalcore. ETA: I don't like nu metal either, but that seems to have faded away.

Maybe it's fair to say I prefer bands that draw inspiration more from the NWOBHM than punk, if that's a fair assessment, even if Amorphis does draw lot of their inspiration from Finnish folk music too, and doesn't quite fit into that overall.

Jadis40,

Forgot about Amorphis! They're a great band, although my favorite vocalist was probably the guy on the Eclipse album (forgot his name). "The Smoke" and "House of Sleep" were both excellent.

I have a CD copy of Eclipse and looked at the list of band members. That's the first release of theirs with Tomi as vocalist. :) And yes, "House of Sleep" and "The Smoke" are both good songs. "Silver Bride" and "Skyforger" from Skyforger are up there as well. Oh, and "From the Heaven of My Heart". "Sky is Mine" is good as well.

I actually have a copy of the Kalevala - (Finland's national epic) where they get a lot of inspiration for their music. I haven't read it all, but I might go back and restart it.
