Hi all!
I'm posting this thread because I've been having an issue with intrusive thoughts, and they've become so annoying that I need some advice on how to deal the problem. I often have bad thoughts about God or positive thoughts about the devil. As a Christian, I naturally don't believe any of those thoughts or want to have them and I know they're ridiculous, but I'm so disturbed by them that I can't stop thinking about them, which makes me have them more. Also, sometimes I have generally bad thoughts while praying. Whenever I have an intrusive thought I pray to God to ask Him to forgive me for thinking it. The thing about that is, I have these thoughts pretty often and I tend to pray obsessively, so sometimes I spend several minutes praying because of these thoughts. Do you guys think I have to pray for forgiveness when I have intrusive thoughts? And do you have any recommendations about how to stop having these thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any help.

As believers we go through this in varying degrees. We're to take every thought captive (II Cor 10:5) and renew our minds with His Word (Rom 12:2). So you're like in the middle of this process. So when those intrusive thoughts come, repent if you want, then ignore them because of Scriptures like I John 1:9. Immediately put all your thoughts, all your focus, on Yahweh. Repeat this process as needed. I'm not saying this will be easy. Plus it's not a one shot thing.

Encourage you to think about some of your favorite Scriptures - the ones that are really meaningful to you -

I love Psa 145.

"I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.

Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.

I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.

And men shall speak of the might of thy tremendous acts: and I will declare thy greatness.

They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.

The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

The Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works." KJV, AMPLIFIED

etc Ending with "My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord; and let all flesh bless (affectionately and gratefully praise) His holy name forever and ever."

This might sound simplistic, but I have known people (including myself) who found immediate freedom by approaching it head-on with authority, and refusing to accept the thoughts. It sounds crazy I know.

The mind works in trails, and if you reinforce a trail of connections, it will build up stronger. In order to break the pathway, refuse it and distract yourself with a topic that needs to be in your mind.

Even if you are harassed spiritually, refusing to become victim to it is key.

There are of course medical issues that can present themselves, so make sure to talk to a doctor-- even if you are already on meds (that can cause additional thought-based patterns).

"Resist the devil, and it will flee" sounds like a lot of work, but it's about authority and rights, not muscle and sword.

Our future-coming minds and bodies of Christ where Jesus is responsible for our physical transformation will become emotionally full of the abundance of peace and joy, that negative thoughts, negative feelings such as depression and anxiety would seem far too microscopic an experience - it's like adding tons of pure water to a cup of mud where the mud is dispersed all over until it disappears:.
For now, our respect for one another as members in a church for example, where our living supernatural Jesus Christ is in our hearts, takes full control of our thoughts, almost like taking full control of a stubborn horse that has never experienced a human rider on it's back before:.
The church members' controlled attitude gives that impression that nobody has sinned at all, and because our negative thoughts and feelings are under supernatural control/subjection by our Lord Jesus, this power of subjection is just a drop in a bucket compared to the power of subjection to every micro-organism such as deadly bacteria, viruses, plants and animals, as well as our planet Earth's destructive nature of environmental and weather forces,
where Christ's Second Coming will make certain that we will have a future paradise on a new Earth that is supernaturally focused on our health and safety,
giving us the time and freedom to be socially active and to achieve spiritual wealth and success on a scale never before experienced because of limitations such as old age, disease and disability, crime and corruption, tragic accidents and wars.;'*';.

Philippians 4.8 says of all that's 'true...honest...just...pure...lovely...of good report...think on these things'. It requires effort positively to think along good and profitable lines, rather than expect it just to happen.

Interestingly, the Lord Jesus is the best example of all those things mentioned in Philippians 4.8.

Hello.
I have religous OCD and what you're describbing are classic symptoms of it.
I know it's difficult but you have to learn to ignore them. Constantly praying for forgiveness only reinforces the idea that something has to be done about the thoughts and so they will just get worse.
I've had therapy and tried medication but nothing works as well as just ignoring the thoughts, knowing that they are there but not being scared of them because you trust that God knows your heart.
Good luck. :)

I have read that it is normal for people to have those intrusive thoughts and you are definitively not alone (I have them too) but the problem is how you face them. The best thing you can do is to ignore them, they are useless products of our imperfect human mind and human condition, when it happens to you, pray to God and say "God, help me and keep those thoughts away from me" it really works if you believe in it! :D

Just ignore it, we all do it. I remember being bothered by the same thing you're saying when I was 14 and in Texas visiting my aunt. I expressed these concerns too her and she turned me and said she used to think of a certain thing that would drive her crazy about Jesus. It would keep flashing in her mind. I won't say it here as it will then flash into others peoples minds here maybe. ^_^ It certainly flashed in my mind when she said it.

It just gets better and easier to ignore as you advance. Hardly happens to me now and when it does I just shrug it off, it's mainly during prayer and I just try to ignore it. Works better now than it used to.

I have OCD, and I have this stuff happen all the time. Except instead of intrusive thoughts, it's some obsessive worry that pops into my head. I worry about something, or something happens to me and I make too much of a big deal out of it, and then I just let it ruin my day. This happened to me...today. Like, literally, today.

Just remember that God is in control and that He cares for you and loves you

I can relate to your these kinds of thoughts, and i agree with the bold approach others have mentioned. Resist these thoughts. I think also go straight to God and pray for Him to help remove these thoughts from your mind, in Jesus name. Boldly believe and trust that God can do this.

Dear Qwerty35. You had some good replies, may I give one more?
Jesus has good advice in Matthew 22: 35-40: " The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second like it: Love thy neighbour as thyself." Jesus also tells us in 40: " On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."
God wants our Love, freely given and NO conditions tagged on, Satan runs away from all Love and Compassion. In Matthew 7: 7-10: we are told: " Ask and you shall receive." Ask God for Love and Joy, then thank God, and share all Love and Joy with your neighbour; all you know and all you meet, friends and not friends. Keep asking for Love and Joy, then thank God, and share all Love and Joy with all around you. Satan will flee, and those intrusive thoughts
leave you. The Holy Spirit will help and guide you, and Jesus our Saviour will
lead you all the way: JESUS IS THE WAY.
The Bible tells us " Repent and be Born Again." Change all selfish thoughts to loving and caring, and chase those intrusive thoughts away.
I say this with love, Qwerty. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.
